Notre Dame Parish in Ottawa was founded in 1827 when the bishop of Kingston assigned a resident priest to minster to Catholics attracted to Bytown to work in the developing lumber industry and the construction of the Rideau Canal.
A wood Church was soon built on Sussex Street but was soon outgrown and a new stone Church was erected on the same site and dedicated in 1842.
The arrival of the Missionary Oblates of of Mary Immaculate in 1844 and the Sisters of Charity in in 1845 allowed new apostolates to develop and flourish in the young diocese. Numerous lay organizations sprung up, beginning with the Saint Vincent de Paul Society founded in 1847.
With the founding of the Diocese of Bytown in 1847 the Church became a cathedral and in 1853 the church was solemnly consecrated under the patronage of Our lady of the Immaculate Conception. In the following years the cathedral's structure was enlarged and the interior embellished and In 1879 the Cathedral was elevated to the rank of a minor basilica. In 1999, the Cathedral underwent a major restoration, in the first phase of a multi-year project.
Until 1857 Notre Dame was the only parish in Bytown, which in 1855 changed its name to Ottawa, which in 1867 became the capital of Canada.
From its earliest days to the present time , the parish has served both English and French speaking Canadians.
Today Notre Dame remains the gathering place for Ottawa's oldest Catholic Community as well as for the Archdiocesan family and the International Community of Canada's Capital. While the archbishop is the pastor of Notre Dame Parish, the cathedral rector and his staff minister to parishioners and visitors alike, with a full range of organizations and activities to meet the need of all who come to Notre Dame.

Exploring Ottawa - ByWard Market, Notre Dame Cathedral & the Royal Canadian Mint - Ottawa, Canada
We had a wonderful time exploring Ottawa, Canada! On this day we set out to listen to the bells in Notre Dame Cathedral, walked through ByWard Market and enjoyed a treat from Beavertails, and then continued over to the Royal Canadian Mint for a tour. Tours are offered here throughout the day for a small fee. The tour includes access to their gift shop where collectable coins can be purchased. Although we couldn't film inside, we enjoyed learning all about how they make coins here - including the rare and incredible Million Dollar Coin. We loved how family friendly and easily accessible this beautiful city was and can't wait to return someday!

A must See Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica - Ottawa
The Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica is a Roman Catholic minor basilica in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada located on 385 Sussex Drive in the Lower Town neighbourhood. It was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1990.[2][3]
The Basilica is the oldest and largest church in Ottawa and the seat of the city's Roman Catholic archbishop. Its twin spires and gilded Madonna are easily identifiable from nearby Parliament Hill and the surrounding area. The church was last renovated and restored in the late 1990s. Services are held in both French and English.
The steeples are covered with tin, which is typical for French-Canadian churches, and house a peal of bells. The exterior is fairly reserved, but the interior is far more ornate, designed by Georges Buillon.
The basilica is decorated with a number of stained-glass windows
The interior of the church is brightly painted and decorated with carved features, exquisite stained glass windows and hundreds of statues of various religious figures.
