Day 1 Exploring the roof of Casablanca Church
First days in a new country are always the best days. Today we met Joseph early to explore our new surroundings. We are currently living in a flat in the area of El Maarif, it didn't take long to notice this was a modern upper-class area, lets say the Chelsea and Knightsbridge of Casablanca. We started our walk from the flat and carried on passing shops like Lacoste, Robert Cavalli, Nike and Zara. Joseph explained that fashion had moved on from the days when he grew up where everyone wore the traditional clothing like .... Now Zara, Nike and other western brands are the it clothes for the new generation. Having a Zara shop bag and walking around town gives you a bit of status. My initial thoughts when I was packing for this trip was to pack long, modest and plain clothing because Morocco was a Muslim country. As we walked around I started noticing this was not the case. The younger women had the same style as western women wearing chic outfits ripped jeans, fun sunglasses, chunky heeled boots and the men had the classic Zara look skinny jeans and shirt or just dressed in sportswear.
As we walked further into the old town the style started to mix men and women were wearing traditional dresses or sportswear clothing. Joseph showed us one of the areas where we could source fabrics and trimmings the area was called .... This area was so busy women bustling around in djellabas looking at fabrics on different tables on back streets haggling prices. He explained this is where mothers, daughters come and have the best day an women's oasis. Joseph told us about an abandoned church that holds catwalks and music concerts, so we decided to check that out next. He told us that as the french left there were less use for catholic or christian churches and as the congregation dwindle they all started closing. It was such a shame to see this magnificent church abandoned, it was huge with the most beautiful stained glass windows and the only noise was from the pigeons who had now made it there home. We paid a man selling his paintings at the door and he let us walk up the stairs to the top of the church. I couldn't believe the view you could see a whole 360 of the city. Joseph then told us of a better view but we would have to actually climb onto the roof of the church. I love a challenge so i agreed immediately, here is a video of our climb. We finished the day with a tram to the beach. Watching the sun go down was a lovely finish to a great day. Can't wait to see what else this trip entails.
