Paintings of the Moscow theatre siege - BBC News
On the 23rd of October, 2002, Chechen militants stormed Moscow's crowded Dubrovka Theatre during a performance of a new Russian romantic musical, Nord Ost. They took 912 hostages and demanded the withdrawal of Russian forces from Chechnya. The siege lasted three days until Russian security services pumped sleeping gas into the hall, stormed it and killed all 40 attackers. At least 130 hostages also died - most not at the hands of the attackers, but because of the effects of the gas. The events were documented in a series of paintings by the British artist, John Keane. They are featured in the new exhibition, Fifty Seven Hours in the House of Culture, running from June until November at the Byre Theatre in St Andrews, Scotland. He's been speaking to Dan Damon.

The Moscow Siege
(31 Dec 2002) The Moscow Siege
Terrorism also hit Europe in October, when Chechen rebels seized a Moscow theatre during the staging of a musical, taking hundreds of people captive. 18 of the attackers were women. They mined the theatre and threatened to blow it up unless Russian President Vladimir Putin withdrew troops from Chechnya. On the day the theatre was seized, some people managed to escape, as seen in dramatic footage filmed by Moscow's rescue services.
Three days later, in a pre-dawn raid, Russian special forces stormed the building, killing the 41 militants. At least 129 of the hostages also died, most of them felled by a narcotic gas used to knock out the rebels before the special forces stormed in. Russia held a national day of mourning for the victims amid rising criticism of the authorities over the number of hostages killed in the operation. Doctors treating the survivors complained their work had been hampered by not knowing exactly what gas had been used by the special forces. Many of the survivors were loaded unconscious onto buses outside the theatre after their rescue.

The Bolshoi Theater. Moscow. / Большой театр. Москва.
The state academic Bolshoi Theatre of Russia (SABT) or just The Bolshoi Theater is one of the largest in Russia and one of the most significant in the world of Opera and ballet. The complex of buildings of the theater is located in the center of Moscow, on Teatralnaya square. Originally the state theatre, formed together with Small one Moscow the troupe of the Imperial theaters. From time to time the status of the Moscow troupe has changed: so it passed in the subordination of the Moscow Governor-General, again under the St. Petersburg Directorate. This continued until the 1917 revolution, when all property was nationalized, and only then there was a complete separation of Small ( Malyi) and Large (Bolshoi) theatres.
The whole history of theatrical culture in Moscow for many years was connected with the Bolshoi theatre. The Bolshoi theatre began as a private theater of the provincial Prosecutor Prince Pyotr Urusov. 28 March 1776, Empress Catherine II signed the Prince privilege for performances, masquerades, balls and other entertainments for a period of ten years. This date is considered the day of Foundation of the Bolshoi theatre in Moscow. At the first stage of the Bolshoi theatre's Opera and dramatic troupes formed a single company. The team was the most diverse: from serf artists to guest from abroad stars.
In the formation of the Opera and drama company, played a major role Moscow University and its gymnasium, both of which provided a good musical education. Theatre classes were organized at Moscow foster home, which also supplied the frames into a new troupe.
The content of the plays and entertainments were financially burdensome, and Prince Pyotr Urusov shared his privilege with the companion — Russified Englishman Michael Maddox, the equilibrist, theatre mechanic and lecturer, to demonstrate various kinds of optical devices and other mechanical wonders.
The first building was built on the right Bank of the river Neglinka. It stood on Petrovka street, whence the theatre derived its name Petrovsky (it was subsequently to be called the Old Petrovsky theatre). It opened on 30 December 1780 in the Fall of 1805, the Petrovsky theatre building burned down. The troupe began to perform at private scenes. And from 1808 on the stage of new Arbat theatre, built by design of K. Rossi. This wooden building also went up in flames during the war of 1812 In July 1820, construction began on the new theatre building that would become the center of the architectural composition of the square and adjacent streets. The facade is decorated with a powerful portico on eight columns with a large sculptural team — Apollo in his chariot with three horses, looked built on Theatre square, which contributed much to the decoration. New theatre, surpassed the size of even the capital, St Petersburg's Bolshoi stone theatre was distinguished monumental grandeur, harmony of proportions, harmony of architectural forms and rich interior decoration. It was very comfortable: there were galleries for the audience, the stairs leading to the tiers, corner and side rooms for relaxing and spacious walk-in closets. The huge auditorium could accommodate over two thousand people. The orchestra pit was deepened. During masquerades the stalls ' floor was raised to the level of the forestage, the orchestra pit being covered by special panels, and was an excellent dance floor. The Bolshoi Petrovsky theatre stood for nearly 30 years. But he suffered the same sad fate: on 11 March 1853 at the theatre, a fire broke out, which lasted three days and destroyed everything they could. Burned theatre machines, costumes, musical instruments, notes, sets... was Almost entirely destroyed and the building itself, leaving only the charred stone walls and portico columns. October 22, 1941 at four o'clock in the Bolshoi theatre was hit by a bomb. The shock wave passed obliquely between the columns of the portico, struck the front wall and did considerable damage in the lobby. Despite the wartime hardship and the severe cold, in the winter of 1942 in the theatre began restoration work. In 2005 the Bolshoi theatre was closed for restoration and reconstruction. In March 2010, the Bolshoi theatre together with Веl Air Media began to broadcast their performances to cinemas around the world. 11 March 2012 in conjunction with the company Google Russia Grand theatre started broadcasting ballet performances on YouTube in Russia. In 2011, the Bolshoi theatre was opened after an extensive renovation, which allowed us to purchase the theater of modern technology and preserve the historical look.

4. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Vladimir Putin, Russian President:
The first information we had from the representatives of the terrorists who took the hostages in Moscow last night came from abroad. This reconfirms that this terrorist outrage can be considered one of the biggest to be carried out on a national as well as an international scale, and that it was planned in foreign terrorist centres. The plan was formed there and the executors of this plan were to be found there too. There's no doubt that these are the very same criminals who have terrorised Chechnya for years and who are today calling for an end to military action. These are the people who have sown death and destruction both inside and outside the boundaries of Chechnya and who want to spread the violence further. The main goal of our law enforcement agencies and special services in planning and carrying out any measures nevertheless should be directed at freeing the captives with the maximum guarantee of their safety.
5. Various close ups Patrushev and Gryzlov
STORYLINE:
Russian President Vladimir Putin declared on Thursday that the overriding goal of police and troops in the Moscow hostage crisis must be to free the hostages in a way that ensures their safety.
Putin made the statement at the opening of a meeting with Nikolai Patrushev, head of the Federal Security Service, and Interior Minister Boris Gryzlov, to discuss measures to end the hostage-taking that began when about 40 Chechen gunmen stormed a Moscow theatre on Wednesday night.
Putin called the raid a major terrorist attack on both a national and international scale, and contended that it had been planned abroad and led by the same people acting against Russian forces in Chechnya.

RUSSIA: GUNMEN THREATEN TO KILL HOSTAGES
Russian/Nat
Gunmen are threatening Thursday to kill some 300 hostages in a hospital in the Russian city of Budyonnovsk unless the Kremlin ends the war in breakaway Chechnya.
Dozens were killed and more wounded in street battles when gunmen, believed to be Chechen rebels, attacked Budyonnovsk on Wednesday.
Russian troops and police have poured into the city, some 90 miles (150 kilometers) north of Chechnya.
In Moscow, the attack has led to stepped-up security and renewed debate about the 6-month-old war.
Sporadic fighting is continuing in the city of Budyonnovsk Thursday with hundreds of troops and police searching house by house for the remaining gunmen, hampered by snipers firing from rooftops.
The city's inhabitants are beginning the task of clearing the debris and tending to the wounded.
17 civilians, 11 police, eight soldiers and six militants have been reported killed and dozens injured. Three of the gunmen were captured.
About 50 gunmen were hospitalised Thursday with most of the hostages, including medical staff, patients, and people grabbed off the street.
Russian Defense Minister Pavel Grachev told the Interfax news agency there were 1-thousand hostages.
Negotiations are continuing with the gunmen threatening to kill 10 hostages for every militant killed. They are demanding an immediate Russian troop withdrawal from Chechnya, ceasefire talks including Dudayev, and a meeting with the media.
Around 200 gunmen attacked Budyonnovsk on Wednesday but were broken into smaller groups during battles with federal troops and police.
Chechen rebels have long threatened to carry guerrilla war beyond their republic into other parts of Russia. The attack on Budyonnovsk may signal a new phase in the war now.
Rebel President Dzhokhar Dudayev denied his forces were involved, and a top aide said the attack may have been by an unorganized group of desperate (Chechen) militants.
Moscow claimed the attack was master minded by Shamil Basayev, a charismatic field commander who has said he remains loyal to Dudayev.
Up to 16-thousand troops were being deployed to protect Moscow from possible further attacks.

Russia 'failed' in Beslan school massacre - BBC News
The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that Russia failed to protect the hostages of the Beslan school siege in which about 330 people died in 2004. In the siege, Chechen rebels took more than 1,000 hostages, mostly children. The operation by Russian forces to end it used disproportionate force, the court added.
It also said that officials knew an attack was imminent but did not act. Russia said the ruling was utterly unacceptable and that it would appeal. No Russian official has been held responsible for the high number of deaths, which included 186 children.
