Novodevichy Convent, also known as Bogoroditse-Smolensky Monastery is probably the best-known cloister of Moscow. Its name, sometimes translated as the New Maidens' Monastery, was devised to differ from an ancient maidens' convent within the Moscow Kremlin. Unlike other Moscow cloisters, it has remained virtually intact since the 17th century. In 2004, it was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Novodevichy Convent, situated in the south-western part of the historic town of Moscow at the crossing of the Moscow River, was founded by Grand Duke Vasily III in the 1520s and was a part of a chain of monastic ensembles that were integrated into the defence system of the city. It is an outstanding example of Orthodox architecture. The ensemble consists of 14 buildings, including 8 cathedrals (a shrine, 4 churches, a belfry with the Barlaam and Josaphat church and two chapels) and a number of residential and service buildings. The monastery is sometimes called “the Moscow Kremlin in miniature”. Its oldest building is a stone cathedral dedicated to the Icon of the Mother God of Smolensk built in 1524–1525 after the fashion of the Assumption Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin.

Православный женский монастырь в Москве, на Девичьем поле в излучине Москвы-реки, близ Лужников, в самом конце исторической Пречистенки (в настоящее время Большой Пироговской улицы).
Основан великим князем Василием III в 1524 году — в честь Смоленской иконы Божией Матери «Одигитрия» — главной святыни Смоленска, в благодарность за овладение Смоленском в 1514 году. На протяжении первых двух столетий своего существования служил местом заточения царственных особ женского пола.
Архитектурный ансамбль монастыря, сложившийся в XVI-XVII веках, с тех пор не претерпел существенных изменений. В качестве исключительного по сохранности образца московского барокко поставлен под охрану ЮНЕСКО и объявлен достоянием всего человечества.
Действующий монастырь находится в совместном ведении Русской православной церкви и Государственного исторического музея. С 2010 года здесь действует церковный музей Московской епархии.

Thanks for joining another video of our trip to Moscow, the massive and historic capital of the Russian Federation - or, more commonly, simply Russia!
This video is a compilation of clips - first, several from Novodevichy Convent just outside the city center and right near the Sportivnaya Metro stop. The cloister was originally founded in 1524 - the same time frame from which the main cathedral, Cathedral of our Lady in Smolensk, dates from. The history of the convent is quite interesting and worth researching - and certainly worth visiting as it is hauntingly beautiful!
Afterward we head further south on the Metro using the 1 line (red on the map), we stop at Vorobyovy Gory which translates to Sparrow Hills! Here there is a nice promenade area along the Moskva River, but the main site is after a roughly 30 minute walk up the hill to the observation deck - this area provides a nice view of the entire city, and just behind you sits the imposing Moscow State University.

LIVE: The Novodevichy Convent in Moscow caught on fire on Sunday night
Russian firefighters were deployed to the iconic Novodevichy Convent in the heart of Moscow to put out a blaze, which started on Sunday night. The fire spread to the top of one of the Convent’s towers, which was hidden by the repair scaffolding.
The Novodevichy Convent is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located close to the Kremlin. It’s also known as the the Bogoroditse-Smolensky Monastery.

Russia: Fire breaks out at Moscow landmark Novodevichy Convent
Russian firefighters were deployed to the iconic Novodevichy Convent in the heart of Moscow, Sunday to put out a blaze which had engulfed the building's bell-tower. The fire spread to the top of the tower, which was encased in scaffolding due to ongoing restoration work. The cause of the blaze is currently unknown.

Novodevichy Convent, also known as Bogoroditse-Smolensky Monastery (Russian: Новоде́вичий монасты́рь, Богоро́дице-Смоле́нский монасты́рь), is probably the best-known cloister of Moscow. Its name, sometimes translated as the New Maidens' Monastery, was devised to differ from an ancient maidens' convent within the Moscow Kremlin. Unlike other Moscow cloisters, it has remained virtually intact since the 17th century. In 2004, it was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Convent is situated in the south-western part of the historic town of Moscow. The Convent territory is enclosed within walls and surrounded by a park, which forms the buffer zone. The park is limited by the urban fabric of the city on the north and east sides. On the west side, it is limited by the Moscow River, and on the south side there is an urban freeway. The buildings are surrounded by a high masonry wall with 12 towers. The entrances are from the north (town side) and the south. The layout of the convent territory is an irregular rectangle stretching from the west to east.[1]
The oldest structure in the convent is the six-pillared five-domed Smolensky Cathedral, dedicated to the icon Our Lady of Smolensk. It is situated in the centre of the axes between the two entrance gates. Extant documents date its construction to 1524–1525; yet its lofty ground floor, magisterial proportions, and projecting central gable are typical of monastery cathedrals built at the behest of Ivan the Terrible. Most scholars agree that the cathedral was rebuilt in the 1550s or 1560s. It was formerly ringed by four smaller chapels, in an arrangement reminiscent of the Annunciation Cathedral in the Kremlin. Its frescos are among the finest in Moscow.
The cathedral may be a focal point of the convent, but there are many other churches. Most date from the 1680s, when the convent was thoroughly renovated at the behest of the regent Sofia Alexeyevna (who, ironically, would be incarcerated there later). The blood-red walls and crown-towers, two lofty over-the-gates churches, a refectory, and residential quarters were all designed in the Muscovite Baroque style, supposedly by a certain Peter Potapov. In the old cathedral, a new bowl for holy water and gilded carved iconostasis were installed in 1685. Its four tiers contain 16th-century icons endowed by Boris Godunov; the fifth tier displays icons by leading 17th-century painters, Simeon Ushakov and Fyodor Zubov.
An arresting slender belltower, also commissioned by tsarevna Sofia, was built in six tiers to a height of 72 metres (236 ft), making it the tallest structure in 18th-century Moscow (after the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in the Kremlin). This light octagonal column seems to unite all major elements of the ensemble into one harmonious whole.

○ 노보데비치 수도원 간략소개
이 수도원은 이반 4세의 아버지 바실리 3세가 폴란드령이던 스몰렌스크를 탈환하여 1514년에 러시아 영토로 편입한 것을 기념하기 위해 1524년에 노보데비치 수녀원을 설립했다고 한다.
여성들을 위한 수도원으로 지어졌지만 크렘린을 지키는 요새 역할도 수행했다.
이 수도원 옆에 있는 호수에서 헤엄치는 백조를 본 차이코프스키가 백조의 호수를 작곡했다고 알려져 있다.
소련 시대에는 박물관이었다가 지금은 다시 러시아 정교회 사원으로 유네스코 세계문화유산에 등제됐다.
○ Brief Introduction of Novodevichy Convent
The monastery founded Novodevichy Convent in 1524 to commemorate Ivan IV's father Vasily III's recapture of Polish Smolensk and its incorporation into Russian territory in 1514.
Although it was built as a monastery for women, it also served as a fortress to guard the Kremlin.
Tchaikovsky, who saw a swan swimming in the lake next to the monastery, is said to have composed a swan lake.
In the Soviet era, it was a museum, but now it is a Russian Orthodox temple and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
