Ukraine crisis: Vladimir Putin pays visit to Crimea
President Vladimir Putin visits Crimea for the first time since Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula, just days ahead of a separatist vote by pro-Moscow militants in eastern Ukraine.
On a triumphant visit to Crimea on Friday, President Vladimir Putin hailed Russia's annexation of the Black Sea peninsula as he celebrated Victory Day, which marks the capitulation of Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union at the end of World War II.
Putin sailed into the port of Sevastopol for the commemorations, his first trip to Crimea since the region seceded from Ukraine and became part of Russia in March.
The Russian leader watched a parade of Russian navy ships and a flyby of Russian aircraft marking Victory Day, and made addressed troops.
Earlier in the day, Putin was in Moscow for a massive display of military hardware at the annual Red Square parade.
Putin made no reference to the situation in Ukraine in his speech in Moscow, which focused on the historic importance of the victory over the Nazis.
Ukraine has condemned Putin's visit to Crimea as trampling on international law.
The Victory Day celebrations come at a time when the world's attention is focused on Ukraine's political crisis.
Pro-Russian insurgents in eastern Ukraine have been fighting with the government and are preparing to hold a referendum on secession on Sunday.

Turkey and Russia in the New Global (Dis)Order
What we witness today is the unraveling of the post-Cold War international order, and both Russia and Turkey play a major role in this process. But what do Moscow and Ankara want? What new order do they dream of? Is the same dream shared by both? What defines their foreign policy – the nature of their political regimes, their imperial legacies, or their national interests?

American Mormons Caught in Malicious Mass Campaign to Buy Russian “Dead Souls”

You can't ignore the threat of biological weapon use by government or non-government institutions. Sergey Ryabkov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, said today. Especially since such an attack could be easily covered up by natural epidemics among people, animals, or plants, and it would be difficult to prove malice. The collection of Russian biological material by Americans remains a hot topic. First, Vladimir Putin mentioned this fact, then his press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, expanded on it. He told about some emissaries and non-government organizations, which are involved in these activities, according to Russian secret services. Creepy, isn't it? The Pentagon's officials did not sound convincing when they admitted that those emissaries represented the American military, as they still need Russian biological material to proceed with human locomotor studies.

Transcaucasia in World War 1 I THE GREAT WAR Special
A big thanks also goes out to Nate Maddex for helping us to make sense of this region and its complex history.
The Caucasus region with its many different ethnic groups and its resources was always of particular interest to the greater powers like Russia, Persia or the Ottoman Empire. In the late 19th and early 20th century, the idea of ethnic self determination and resulting national movements, the fluctuating powers situation caused by World War 1 created a unique situation for Georgians, Azerbaijanis and Armenians.

There have been tensions between Mormon missionaries and the local Russian population.
