Here I present a photographic history of the construction of the Novosibirsk State Opera & Ballet Theatre.
The theatre is one of the most important theatres in Sibera and is located n the centre of Novosibirsk on Lenin Square.
Work began in 1932 with the clearance of a large area of the centre of the old city. and was completed in February 1944. The first performance was held on the 12 May 1945. As of the time of this video, the theatre is the largest in all of Russia ( even beating the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow). The theatre is often called the Siberian Coliseum because of its size and beauty. The auditorium seats more than 1,790 spectators. Its upper gallery is decorated with copies of antique Greek statues. The central dome is 60 m (200ft) wide and 35 m (115ft) high. The dome is a unique construction that supports itself without girders or columns. In front of the dome there is a large foyer, whilst behind it there is a 30 m (98ft) deep stage......
