RUSSIA: MOSCOW: 7 PEOPLE KILLED IN BOMB BLAST
Russian/Nat
Seven people were killed and 22 injured on Tuesday when a bomb ripped through an underground walkway packed with hundreds of commuters and shoppers in central Moscow.
A second bomb was found and defused near the scene of the blast at Pushkin Square, the Interfax news agency reported.
The Federal Security Service said seven people were killed and 22 injured in the blast at the start of the evening rush hour.
Police said there was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast, but it was being treated as a terrorist attack.
Immediate suspicion centered on Chechen rebel forces.
The area is one of the busiest in Moscow, adjoining two major streets and three subway stations.
The passageway is also lined with kiosks and shops.
Medical workers treated badly injured people lying in the road.
Wounded pedestrians, their clothes burned and shredded and covered in blood, staggered out of the passageway shouting as other people ran for cover.
Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov said the city prosecutors were treating it as a terrorist attack and said Chechens could be to blame.
Police were put on alert around the capital and were ordered to check the many underground passageways around Moscow.
Police and security agents flooded the area after the blast, holding back frightened onlookers as smoke gushed from the passageway.
Traffic above ground was stopped and entrances to the walkway were closed.
People streamed out after the blast screaming, many covered head to foot in black soot as smoke filled the multiple passages.
The blast came the day after Russian security forces had been on alert in case of possible attacks by Chechen separatists to mark the August 6, 1996 anniversary of the rebels' capture of the Chechen capital of Grozny.
Moscow and other Russian cities have been jittery since a series of apartment bombings late last year killed about 300 people.
The Kremlin blamed the bombings on Chechen rebels and sent troops into Chechnya a few weeks later.
The Chechens deny the charge.

A homemade drug called Krokodil is gaining popularity in Siberia and its effects on users are horrific. Krokodil is Russian for Crocodile, because of the way addicts' skin begins to get turn scaly, dry and eventually rot right off their bodies. Even most heroin users are frightened by Krokodil and want nothing to do with this terrifying drug.

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Catholic worshippers attended a Nativity service at Moscow's Catholic Cathedral on Monday night to celebrate Christmas Eve.
Some churchgoers stopped by a nativity scene, which illustrated the birth of Jesus Christ.
High Reverend Paolo Pezzi, Archbishop of the Catholic Church of Russia, presided over the service, telling the congregation that Christmas was a time of hope for everyone.
It is the hope that He supports our lives, Pezzi said.
Lyudmila Goncharova, who attended the service, echoed the Archbishop's sentiments.
Christmas is the most important day. It is the most important day for our family, she said.
The Catholic church, which uses the Gregorian calendar, celebrates Christmas Day on December 25, whilst the Russian Orthodox Church, which operates using the Julian calendar, celebrates the feast of the nativity of Jesus Christ on 7 January.

Russia - Lubavitch Religious Children's Camp
T/I:
A special Jewish summer camp, held in a former camp for young
communists 50 miles outside Moscow in the town of Ruza, aims to
bring young Russian Jews closer to their religion, tradition and
heritage. Under the guidance of American and Israeli counsellors, the children in the Ruza camp learned Hebrew, studied Torah and learned many of the rules and guidelines for religious observance and social conduct. On Friday (25/8), they showed how they had been taught to make their bunks extra-clean for the beginning of the Sabbath. For their good
behaviour, the campers were awarded with fake personalized
cheques which they could exchange for goods at a special camp
shop. Recently, the campers took a field trip to Moscow, where
they sang and prayed on Red Square. The organizer of the camp,
Rabbi Berel Lazar, says he hoped to teach these young Russians to
be proud of their religion.

rabbi berel lazar sot (english): the goal of our work is to bring
every jew closer to judaism. we don't care how much closer he will
get to judaism through our work, but at least he should get closer
to it. he should feel and understand what it means to be a jew. he
should start practising some judaism in his home, in his
synagogue, and he should be proud of it.

Russia - Catholic church celebrates Easter
T/I: 10:51:13
Easter is still a week away for most Russians Christians, who observe the Orthodox calendar, but the relatively small Roman Catholic community in Moscow crowded into its three churches for Easter services on Sunday (12/4). With the backing of the Russian Orthodox Church, the government recently passed a law giving official recognition to only the Orthodox, Jewish and Muslim religions in the country. The three established Catholic churches in Moscow, including the largest St. Louis which caters to a large ethnic Polish community, were packed Sunday morning for Easter services, while in the Orthodox churches believers were marking Palm Sunday.

???? 360° GoPro Omni VR: Beit T'shuva | Birobidzhan, Russia ????????
A 360° GoPro VR view from inside the tiny but fascinating Beit T'shuva Synagogue - a.k.a. the Old Synagogue of Birobidzhan - in the ill-fated Jewish Autonomous Oblast in the Far East of Russia. It has been described as follows: Nowhere are the ties between Jews and non-Jews here clearer than in Birobidzhan's tiny second synagogue, located on the outskirts of the city. It is Sabbath and it could be a 19th-century Jewish village were it not for the phone in the corner. The building is no more than 40 paces long, with low ceilings and a tin roof. - a must-visit quirk on any Trans-Siberian Railway trip! =] ????????
