Nozyk Synagogue in Warsaw
The Nozyk Synagogue in Warsaw is the only synagogue to have survived the war and still be in use as the reform and hasydic communities use modern buildings.
This short film shows the interior of the building.

Around the Nozyk Synagogue in Warsaw
Around the Nozyk Synagogue in Warsaw
Warsaw, Nożyk Synagogue, planned destroyed by Germany, rebuilt by Polish People's Republic
After the Liberation of Poland from Germany the demolished building was partially restored and returned to the Warsaw Jewish Commune. It was completely rebuilt between 1977 and 1983 (officially opened April 18, 1983). It was also then that a new wing was added to the eastern wall, currently housing the seat of the commune, as well as several other Jewish organizations.
In 1939, the Nożyk Synagogue was one of the five largest synagogues in Warsaw . In 1940, he closed and devastated by the Nazis, served as stables for horses and magazine feed. After the creation of the Warsaw Ghetto, she found herself in the so-called a small ghetto.
On May 20, 1941, the German authorities allowed the opening of three synagogues for the faithful, including the Nozyk Synagogue. The ceremonial opening took place on the Rosh Hashana festival . Modules were celebrated by the supervisor, Dawid Ajzensztadt , and a short and meaningful speech devoted to the Month of the Child was given by prof. Majer Balaban - a new rabbi and preacher of the synagogue. In July 1942, the synagogue was closed again, and after the liquidation of the so-called a small ghetto was on the Aryan side.
During the Warsaw Uprising, the synagogue was significantly damaged during street fighting and bombing, but its solid construction did not collapse.
Before World War II the Jewish community of Warsaw, one of the largest Jewish communities in the world at that time, had over 400 houses of prayer at its disposal. However, at the end of 19th century only two of them were separate structures, while the rest were smaller chapels attached to schools, hospitals or private homes.
Nożyk Synagogue, Warsaw
The only surviving prewar Jewish house of prayer in Warsaw, Poland. It was built in 1898-1902 and was restored after World War II.
During World War II the area was part of the Small Ghetto. After 1941 the Germans used the building as stables and a depot.
