Sudan The Nubian Caravans - The Secrets of Nature
Sudan, the biggest country in Africa. In the south the Nile with its feeder rivers dominates an almost impenetrable swamp landscape. Towards the north begins the Savanna, which blends into the Egyptian desert farther on. Since time immemorial camels have marked the dry areas of the land and determined the lifestyle of the various nomadic tribes.

Sudan - an epic, adventurous journey into the Nubian desert
We found thousands of years old rock engravings deep in the Nubian desert in Sudan. It took a lot of offroad driving and adventure to find this place. What a great expedition in Africa!
Nabta Playa: Ancient Astronomy in the Nubian Desert
Nabta Playa is a remarkable site composed of hundreds of prehistoric tumuli, stelae, and megalithic structures located in the Nubian Desert, approximately 100 kilometers south of the Tropic of Cancer in Egypt.
Sometimes called Egypt's Stonehenge, it was an important ceremonial center from 11.000 to 5.000 years ago. Archaeological discoveries reveal that the people of Nabta Playa had much more advanced knowledge of astronomy and mathematics than previously thought possible.
By the 5th millennium BC these peoples had fashioned what may be among the world's earliest known archeoastronomical devices (roughly contemporary to the Goseck circle in Germany and the Mnajdra megalithic temple complex in Malta). These structures include six alignments extending across the sediments of the Playa, containing a total of 24 megaliths, moved to the site from an open sandstone area about half a mile away.
Like the spokes on a wheel each alignment radiates outward from a complex stone structure in the centre. One of the megalithic alignments is parallel to the rising point of Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky.
About 300 metres north of these mega stones the 'calendar circle' (see image above) is located. This stone circle is very small compared with the great structures of Stonehenge and Carnac but it demonstrates similar astronomical affiliations. In this calendar circle, Egypt's earliest astronomical measuring device marks the rising position of the Sun at summer solstice.
At the western edge of Nabta Playa the Saharan pastoralists constructed some 30 megalithic structures as well, consisting of both surface and subterranean features. A shaped stone, which bears some resemblance to a cow, was unearthed from one of these megalithic structures.
The ancient nomads of Nabta Playa moved across trackless oceans of sand, and they must have found the stars to be as useful for navigation as did those who attempted to find their ways across the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Ultimately they were drawn to the playa because of the promise of water, which began to accumulate in the Nabta Playa basin around the time of summer solstice.
From about 65,000 years ago until about 12,000 years ago the Nubian Desert was hyper-arid, perhaps even drier then today. Changes began when the summer rains of tropical Africa began to move northward, bringing sufficient moisture for a variety of sahelian grasses, trees, and bushes to grow and for a few animals to exit, mostly hares and small gazelle, but also small carnivores.
The people of Nabta Playa dug deep wells that held water throughout the year, designed their villages, and by the 6th millennium BC, they sacrificed young cows and buried them in stone-roofed chambers lined with clay. The degree of organization and control of Nabta Playa's complex society, not previously seen in Egypt, may have contributed to the development of high culture along the Nile.
It has been suggested that Nabta Playa's cattle cult marks an early evolution of ancient Egypt's cow goddess Hathor, the mother of the Sun as well as of Horus. In spite of this symbolic significance of cattle in the Old Kingdom, they did not play a significant role in the economy. Thus, cattle worship may have been part of the heritage passed on by Saharan pastoralists to the great kingdoms of the Nile Valley.

EGYPT: Aswan - Nile - Kitchener's Island - Nubian village
Aswan is a busy market and tourist centre located on the east bank of the Nile, in the south of Egypt. It is one of the hottest, sunniest and driest cities in the world and rainfall doesn't occur every year. The stone quarries of ancient Egypt located here were celebrated for their stone. They furnished the colossal statues, obelisks, and monolithal shrines that are found throughout Egypt, including the pyramids.

El Nabatat Island, or Kitchener's Island, is a small, oval-shaped island in the Nile at Aswan, Egypt. It is one of two major islands on the Nile in vicinity of Aswan, the other one being Elephantine. The Aswan Botanical Garden is located on the island. The island and gardens can be reached by felucca (traditional wooden sailing boat).
The island is known as Kitchener's Island, named after Lord Kitchener who owned it. He was gifted the island, when he served as Consul-General in Egypt from 29 September 1911 to June 1914. With the aid of the Ministry of Irrigation, Kitchener rapidly transformed the small 750 metres (2,460 ft) long island into a paradise of exotic trees, many from India, and plants in gardens with view walkways. It later passed into the property of the Egyptian government and was used as a research station called the Botanical Research Institute, Aswan Botanic Island.

Nubia is a region along the Nile river encompassing the area between Aswan in southern Egypt and Khartoum in central Sudan. It was the seat of one of the earliest civilizations of ancient Africa, with a history that can be traced from at least 2500 BC onward with the Kerma culture.
The latter was conquered by the New Kingdom of Egypt under pharaoh Thutmose I around 1500 BC. Nubia was home to several empires, most prominently the kingdom of Kush, which conquered Egypt during the 8th century BC during the reign of Piye and ruled the country as its Twenty-fifth Dynasty (to be replaced a century later by the native Egyptian Twenty-sixth Dynasty).
Today, Africans of Nubian descent primarily live in southern Egypt, especially in the Luxor and Aswan area. Nubians have been resettled in large numbers away from southern Egypt since the 1960s, when the Aswan High Dam was built on the Nile, flooding ancestral lands.

How The Sahara Desert Was Made - It Used To Be Green - Full Documentary
Some scientists believe ancient farming caused the Sahara to dry up. A new study suggests that the desertification of Sahara started about 7 million years ago, at least four million years earlier than previously thought. However, the widely-held belief is that the Sahara dried up due to a change in the Earth’s orbit, which affects solar insolation, or the amount of electromagnetic energy the Earth receives from the Sun. In simpler terms, insolation refers to the amount of sunlight shining down on a particular area at a certain time, and depends on factors such as the geographic location, time of day, season, landscape and local weather.
Changes in the Earth’s tilt cause changes in weather patterns. Such a change is believed to have made the “Green Sahara” go dry.
Climate scientist Gavin Schmidt, of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, explained that around 8,000 years ago, the
Earth’s orbit was slightly different to how it is today. The tilt changed from around 24.1 degrees to the present-day 23.5 degrees.
“Additionally, the Earth had its closest approach to the Sun in the northern hemisphere (with) summer in August,” Schmidt said. “Today, that closest approach is in January. So, summertime in the north was warmer back then than it is now.”
The changes in the Earth’s orbital tilt and precession (or the wobbling motion) occur because of gravitational forces emanating from other bodies in the solar system. To understand exactly what happens, picture a spinning top when it is slightly disturbed. Just like a top, the Earth too wobbles slightly about its rotational axis. This tilt changes between roughly 22 and 25 degrees about every 41,000 years, while the precession varies on about a 26,000-year period. These cycles have been determined by astronomers and validated by geologists studying ocean sediment records.
“If you get a long enough time series that can be well dated, you should be able to see frequencies in the data that correspond to the periods predicted by theory,” Schmidt explained.

EGYPT: Nile Cruise & Ancient Monuments (Luxor, Aswan, Giza)
Impression of Egypt along the Nile. More videos of the 7-day Nile Cruise:
Egyptian civilization have depended on the river Nile since ancient times. Most of the population and cities of Egypt lie along the Nile valley north of Aswan. Silt deposits from the Nile made the surrounding land fertile because the river overflowed its banks annually. The Ancient Egyptians cultivated and traded wheat, flax, papyrus and other crops around the Nile. The Nile was also a convenient and efficient means of transportation for people and goods. Nearly all the cultural and historical sites of Ancient Egypt are found along river banks.
The Nile was an important part of ancient Egyptian spiritual life and considered to be a causeway from life to death and the afterlife. The east was thought of as a place of birth and growth, and the west was considered the place of death. Thus, all tombs were west of the Nile, because the Egyptians believed that in order to enter the afterlife, they had to be buried on the side that symbolized death.

The Colossi of Memnon (51:16) are two massive stone statues of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who reigned in Egypt during the Dynasty XVIII. For the past 3,400 years (since 1350 BC), they have stood in the Theban Necropolis, located west of the River Nile from the modern city of Luxor. Two shorter figures are carved into the front throne alongside his legs: these are his wife Tiye and mother Mutemwiya. The side panels depict the Nile god Hapy.
The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities (55:30), known commonly as the Egyptian Museum, in Cairo-Egypt, is home to an extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities. It has 120,000 items, with a representative amount on display, the remainder in storerooms. It houses the world's largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities.
Part of the collection will be moved to the new Grand Egyptian Museum set to open in 2020. It will house Tutankhamun's complete collection of between 4000 and 5000 artefacts, many of which are undergoing restoration and have never been displayed; the vast collection we have viewed at the old museum represents only about a third of the whole. The Grand Egyptian Museum is located on 50 hectares at Giza, two kilometres from the Grand Pyramids. The Egyptian Museum in Cairo will remain open.
