Nubian village Aswan Egypt - Felucca sailing on the Nile
This was a once in a lifetime experience. We left our Movenpick hotel early in the morning. Boarded our Falucca and started to sail up the Nile river in Aswan to two Nubian villages. We had lunch on Elephantine Island with a Nubian elder. He was so gracious and took us on a walking tour of the island.

Sailing on the Nile with a felucca (Egyptian sailboat) in Aswan, Egypt
A felucca is a traditional wooden sailing boat used in protected waters of the Red Sea and eastern Mediterranean including Malta, and particularly along the Nile in Egypt, Sudan, and also in Iraq. Its rig consists of one or two lateen sails. They are usually able to board ten passengers and the crew consists of two or three people. Despite being made obsolete by motorboats and ferries, feluccas are still in active use as a means of transport in Nile-adjacent cities like Aswan or Luxor. They are especially popular among tourists who can enjoy a quieter and calmer mood than motorboats have to offer.

Hi, I am Eileen from Belgium, nice to meet you. I started this channel two years ago but was not updating on a regular basis. After making some videos for friends and family, I realized this is something I love to do. I got inspired by some of my favorite YouTube channels such as Travellight, Kara & Nate, The Way Away and the Bucketlist Family. I accepted the challenge to visit all Belgian municipalities and because I love to travel, I do it as often as possible.
Aswan - Nubia,Egypt
Aswan is the ancient city of Swenet, which in antiquity was the frontier town of Ancient Egypt facing the south. Swenet is supposed to have derived its name from an Egyptian goddess with the same name. This goddess later was identified as Eileithyia by the Greeks and Lucina by the Romans during their occupation of Ancient Egypt because of the similar association of their goddesses with childbirth, and of which the import is the opener. The ancient name of the city also is said to be derived from the Egyptian symbol for trade.
Aswan is Egypt's hottest, driest inhabited city[citation needed]. Aswan's climate ranges from mild in the winter to very hot in the summer with absolutely no rain all year. Maybe 1 or 2 mm of rain every 5 years[citation needed]. Aswan is one of the driest inhabited places in the world; as of early 2001, the last rain there was seven years earlier. As of 6 April 2010[update], the last rainfall was a thunderstorm on May 13, 2006. In Nubian settlements, they generally do not bother to roof all of the rooms in their houses[citation needed].
Nubia is a region along the Nile, in northern Sudan and southern Egypt.
There were a number of small Nubian kingdoms throughout the Middle Ages, and Madison was the ruler of all of Nubia. The last of which collapsed in 1504, when Nubia became divided between Egypt and the Sennar sultanate resulting in the Arabization of much of the Nubian population. Nubia was again united within Ottoman Egypt in the 19th century, and within Anglo-Egyptian Sudan from 1899 to 1956.
The name Nubia is derived from that of the Noba people, nomads who settled the area in the 4th century, with the collapse of the kingdom of Meroë. The Noba spoke a Nilo-Saharan language, ancestral to Old Nubian. Old Nubian was used in mostly religious texts dating from the 8th and 15th centuries AD. Before the 4th century, and throughout classical antiquity, Nubia was known as Kush, or, in Classical Greek usage, included under the name Ethiopia (Aithiopia).
Historically, the people of Nubia spoke at least two varieties of the Nubian language group, a subfamily which includes Nobiin (the descendant of Old Nubian), Kenuzi-Dongola, Midob and several related varieties in the northern part of the Nuba Mountains in South Kordofan. A variety (Birgid) was spoken (at least until 1970) north of Nyala in Darfur but is now extinct.

Treasures of the Nile - Aswan, Egypt
Ruth and I stayed two days in Aswan before driving to Abu Simbel. In Aswan we spent one day on a faluka sailing down the Nile to a Nubian village. On the way back upriver the wind died and it took us until midnight to get back to Aswan. The boatman wanted to charge us double because it took so long, and when we refused, he wouldn't drop us on the east bank. After much argument he let us off the boat on the west bank. We stayed at our drivers relative's house until 2:00am before taking the last ferry boat back to Aswan. We were wore out when we returned to our hotel. It was an exciting day.

EGYPT: Aswan - Nile - Kitchener's Island - Nubian village
Aswan is a busy market and tourist centre located on the east bank of the Nile, in the south of Egypt. It is one of the hottest, sunniest and driest cities in the world and rainfall doesn't occur every year. The stone quarries of ancient Egypt located here were celebrated for their stone. They furnished the colossal statues, obelisks, and monolithal shrines that are found throughout Egypt, including the pyramids.

El Nabatat Island, or Kitchener's Island, is a small, oval-shaped island in the Nile at Aswan, Egypt. It is one of two major islands on the Nile in vicinity of Aswan, the other one being Elephantine. The Aswan Botanical Garden is located on the island. The island and gardens can be reached by felucca (traditional wooden sailing boat).
The island is known as Kitchener's Island, named after Lord Kitchener who owned it. He was gifted the island, when he served as Consul-General in Egypt from 29 September 1911 to June 1914. With the aid of the Ministry of Irrigation, Kitchener rapidly transformed the small 750 metres (2,460 ft) long island into a paradise of exotic trees, many from India, and plants in gardens with view walkways. It later passed into the property of the Egyptian government and was used as a research station called the Botanical Research Institute, Aswan Botanic Island.

Nubia is a region along the Nile river encompassing the area between Aswan in southern Egypt and Khartoum in central Sudan. It was the seat of one of the earliest civilizations of ancient Africa, with a history that can be traced from at least 2500 BC onward with the Kerma culture.
The latter was conquered by the New Kingdom of Egypt under pharaoh Thutmose I around 1500 BC. Nubia was home to several empires, most prominently the kingdom of Kush, which conquered Egypt during the 8th century BC during the reign of Piye and ruled the country as its Twenty-fifth Dynasty (to be replaced a century later by the native Egyptian Twenty-sixth Dynasty).
Today, Africans of Nubian descent primarily live in southern Egypt, especially in the Luxor and Aswan area. Nubians have been resettled in large numbers away from southern Egypt since the 1960s, when the Aswan High Dam was built on the Nile, flooding ancestral lands.

We visited a Nubian village. The Nubian civilization is one of the oldest in the world
Aswan is the smallest of the three major tourist cities on the Nile. Being the furthest south of the three, it has a large population of Nubian people, mostly resettled from their homeland in the area flooded by Lake Nasser. Aswan is the home of many granite quarries from which most of the Obelisks seen in Luxor were sourced. Aswan was the ancient Egyptians' gateway. Nubia (southern Egypt, the area around Aswan) lies on the border between the Arab and African worlds and is also called the gateway to Africa. The Nubians seem to lack the Egyptians; both their appearance and their culture is closely related to that of the more southern African peoples. The Nubians have a strong social bond. Which is reinforced by the joint history: The construction of the dam at Aswan the Nubians lost their original habitat. The dam Lake Nasser, emerged with a length of 500 km the largest reservoir in the world. It extends far into Sudan. The lake, built to provide electricity to Egypt was once the collective trauma of the Nubians. In the lake almost all Nubia disappeared. Tens of thousands of people were evacuated to the area around Aswan to Sudan. Nubian monuments have been moved to higher ground with the help of the international community. Since 1997, in the Nubian museum the history of the Nubians preserved; a paltry concession to a people who lost his land forever. In the Nubian museum are hundreds of art and objects from the drowned land gathered . The Nubian civilization is one of the oldest in the world. Because no written language has survived, but the Nubian has survived only as a spoken language is to this culture little research. The Nubian history has gone through a particularly rich development. Ancient Nubia had gold mines and the area on the main trade route with the rest of Africa. To ensure the supply of raw materials conquered the ancient Egyptians in the pharaonic period very often areas. Nubia, a country south of Upper Egypt, had a large gold reserve.

Nubians are an ethnolinguistic group indigenous to present-day Sudan and southern Egypt who originate from the early inhabitants of the central Nile valley, believed to be one of the earliest cradles of civilization. They speak Nubian languages, part of the Northern Eastern Sudanic languages.Today, people of Nubian descent primarily live in southern Egypt, especially in the Luxor and Aswan area, and in northern Sudan, particularly in the region between the city of Wadi Halfa on the Egyptian-Sudanese border and al Dabbah.
