nuranang falls, jang, tawang, arunachal pradesh
a very beautiful waterfall! it was one of the highlights of our tawang trip! the song tanhai tanhai tanhai from the 1997 bollywood movie koyla was shot in parts here also, besides at sangetser tso, located further beyond tawang! according to one interesting anecdote, though appears to be fabricated, it is named after NURA, a local monpa girl who helped mahavir chakra awardee jaswant singh rawat during the 1952 sino-indian war! she later committed suicide after the death of the soldier! apparently the name nuranang was in local use much earlier and the etymology as such is unknown to me at present! the wiki page on this waterfall is by me!

The Nuranang river originates from the Northern slopes of the Sela Pass. Just below the waterfall it falls into the Tawang river.
According to a popular myth, Nuranang river and Nuranang falls are named after a local Monpa girl named Nura who had helped a soldier, Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, Maha Vir Chakra (posthumous) in the 1962 Sino-Indian War and was later captured by the Chinese forces.

When the sun first strikes India, it shines upon Arunachal’s wild jungles and tribal communities. Arunachal, the name means “land of rising sun”. Arunachal Pradesh is a sprawling mountainous territory, a land of mighty rocks and luxuriant forests, gentle streams and ragging torrents, presents a breath-taking spectacle of nature in all her glory, raw and unspoilt and untamed in wild profusion of flora and fauna, customs, language and dress.

Ride to North East India | CH08 - Blizzard | Arunachal Pradesh - Dirang - Sela Pass - Nuranang Falls
Assam, a land of green valleys, red river and vast tea plantations, is a gateway to the other North-Eastern states. On my way to Arunachal Pradesh, I stopped at one tea estate near Orang to explore the world-famous Assam Tea. Assam is the largest tea producing state in India, making up to more than 50% of all tea production in the country.
Beginning of the mountainous road was a clear indication of entering Arunachal Pradesh at Balemu check-post. With each turn and twist, the road changes its texture trying hard to match with the varying landscape. Soon the tar road transformed into the slippery mud path where I was trying hard not to fall and move forward. Apart from the incessant rain, skiddy road and thick fog, the darkness was a bigger challenge to reach Dirang.
Next morning I left behind the cosiness of the hotel Snow Lion and took a beautiful road leading to Tawang. With increasing altitude, the road became more primitive & dirty, making difficult to move upwards.
After 12000 feet, icy sleet started covering everything under the thick white blanket, including Yaks. At one point, I stopped for a while to enjoy the snowfall. It was amazing to breathe in such thin air, all alone.
Riding on the road bordered by snow was a thrilling experience, except the freaking cold air hitting on my skin.
Sela Pass!! What a beautiful Gateway to Tawang !! Almost feels like a door to heaven at 13700 feet above. The Snowfall turned into Blizzard. Tiny little snowflakes heaped all over but I was enjoying this rare moment of my life. I was watching the dance of ice out of the window while drinking a super hot cup of tea in Army Cafeteria.
Sela Lake is a high altitude lake situated near the summit of Sela pass, often freezes in winter. Due to bad weather, I had a chance to marvel at the beautiful Sela Lake without any human obstruction.
The harsh climate made my ride little more challenging, but without pain how one can appreciate such beauty.
The first glimpse of Nuranang Waterfall was awe-inspiring and exciting. The water was falling fiercely from a 100-meters high cliff. Surprisingly, many travellers didn't even know about this place, which is on the way to Tawang.

Jang Falls (Tawang, Arunachal) - India 2009 [HD]
Mesmerising Jang Falls is where the Narangan River tumbles 80 m into Tawang Chu (River). Action scenes from the 2007 Hindi hit movie Koyla were shot here. The falls are 5 km below Jang village where we were greeted by a festival march of young Tibetans. A large sheep herd is also encountered and some Tibetan kiddies do an MTV dance.
