Hike out to the site of the 2005 APEC Leaders’ Meeting for some recent history and unmatched Busan views.
At the tip of a forested peninsula to the west of Haeundae Beach sits the round, glassy Nurimaru APEC House, the site of the 2005 APEC Leaders’ Meeting. Hike through the forest to the house for a quick tour of the modern facility and gorgeous views of Gwangan Bridge and the Busan coastline.
APEC, or the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, is the trade organization of 21 Pacific Rim nations, including South Korea, the United States and Chile. In 2005, APEC held its yearly Leaders’ Meeting in Busan; the Nurimaru APEC House had been constructed specifically for the occasion.
Tour the 32,000-square-foot (3,000-square-meter) house that is now a museum dedicated to the 2005 meeting. Inside the house, the round table at which the meeting was held is preserved inside a large auditorium. The museum even has a replica of the meal served to the APEC representatives.
At the third-floor entrance, see the 21.6-foot (6.6-meter) long piece of lacquerwork inlaid with mother-of-pearl by Kim Gyu-Jang. Try to identify the 12 longevity symbols: sun, cloud, mountain, rock, water, crane, deer, turtle, pine, herb of eternal youth, bamboo and mythical peach.
The building overlooks the ocean from the south end of Dongbaekseom Island, which is a forested peninsula to the west of Haeundae Beach. During low tide, wander across the rocks between the building and the ocean and explore the tidal pools. For a longer hike, follow the paths through the forest, and cross the long rope bridge extended high above the waves.
To the east of Nurimaru APEC House stands a lighthouse, which can be entered free of charge. Climb the stairs for wide panoramic views of Haeundae Beach, Dalmaji Hill and the Busan skyline.
The nearest bus stop and train station are several minutes’ walk away from Nurimaru APEC House. Parking is available for a fee in the lot on the northwest part of the peninsula, but you will have to walk along the forest trails to reach the site. Admission to the Nurimaru APEC House is free.

I would believe that we may be able to make some movement on this, especially because the United States has a new position and a new programme to reduce subsidy for a certain period that has already been determined.

STORYLINE:
Asia-Pacific leaders including US President George W. Bush and China's Hu Jintao sought to breathe life into stalled global trade negotiations at an annual summit on Saturday with a statement calling for a breakthrough in a stalemate with Europe over agricultural subsidies.
Wrapping up their annual summit, the 21 leaders of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum also promised to boost cooperation on fighting terrorism and preparing for a possible flu pandemic.
Moreover, they urged that further progress be made at international talks seeking to convince North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons ambitions.
Roh, speaking at the conclusion of the summit, said the leaders welcomed positive progress made at the recent six-party talks toward the verifiable denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.
The North agreed in September at the six-nation talks to abandon its nuclear program in exchange for security guarantees and energy aid.
But progress on disarmament has come to a standstill since then, with no progress made at the latest negotiations earlier this month in Beijing.
The agreements were announced after the leaders participated in the APEC tradition of donning traditional costumes from the host nation for an official photo.
The leaders posed in durumagi, or Korean silk overcoats, and were allowed to choose their colour from a rainbow of pastels.
Bush was clad in blue, Hu chose brown, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi donned silver and Roh suited up in gold.
Unblocking the disputes over agriculture was a key issue at the summit, and Australia and Canada wanted the statement to name Europe as the main obstacle in the WTO, but other leaders objected because they didn't want to single out any country or region for criticism, officials said.
Fears of a possible human pandemic spawned by bird flu was also on the agenda, after China announced its first human cases.
Badawi said that the ability to manufacture the vaccine was a key priority.

STORYLINE:
Asia-Pacific leaders on Saturday turned the focus of their annual summit to the potential catastrophe a global flu pandemic would wreak in their countries and the lingering menace of terrorism.
Security issues were expected to dominate the second and final day of talks among the 21 leaders of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, including US President George W. Bush, Chinese President Hu Jintao, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The leaders assembled on Saturday in a newly built villa on the South Korean coast, named Nurimaru house - a new Korean word meaning pinnacle of the world.
Heavy security surrounds the villa, including naval cordons and helicopters.
Besides the potential threat of attack, protests were also expected Saturday.
On Friday, the leaders concentrated trying to find ways and revive global trade talks that have stalled because of disputes over European farming subsidies.

STORYLINE
APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) leaders began a final day of discussions on Sunday in Hanoi.
They vowed to spare no efforts to revive moribund world trade talks, but were likely to relegate mention of North Korea's nuclear weapons program to a separate oral declaration.
The 21 members, who represent more than half the world's economy, have been keen to salvage the so-called Doha round of World Trade Organisation talks aimed at slashing trade barriers after they fell apart in July.
The consequences of the failure of the Doha round would be too grave for our economies, said a draft of their final statement obtained by The Associated Press.
We should, therefore, spare no efforts to break the current deadlocks and achieve an ambitious and overall balanced outcome.
Despite APEC's economic focus, heightened concerns over North Korea's 9 October nuclear test and the upcoming resumption of six-party talks with the volatile regime have dominated the summit as leaders on Sunday began their second and last day of consultations.
Illustrating the sensitivities in the region to interference in another nation's affairs, however, those worries over North Korea were likely to be expressed separately, probably in a joint oral statement, officials said, rather than in the written declaration released at the end of their summit.
A draft of the North Korea statement expresses strong concern about the nuclear test, calls for full implementation of UN sanctions against the regime and urges the North to fulfill a September 2005 agreement that committed it to give up nuclear arms in return for security and aid guarantees.
The United States and its partners in dealing with North Korea have been jockeying in recent days to coordinate their stances ahead of the expected resumption of the six-nation talks next month. The talks involve the two Koreas, the US, Japan, China and Russia.
The countries have held a series of bilateral meetings in Hanoi in an effort to meld the harder US and Japanese stance toward the North with the more conciliatory attitudes of China, South Korea and Russia.
North Korea was the focus of a meeting between US President George W. Bush and South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun on Saturday.
The two leaders discussed what they could offer in terms of aid and security guarantees to the North in exchange for it taking steps towards dismantling its nuclear program, said South Korea's foreign minister-designate, Song Min-soon.
For the Japanese, the upcoming round represented a do-or-die attempt to stop North Korea on its march to build an atomic bomb.
Japan is within range of North Korean missiles and a nuclear-armed North is Tokyo's ultimate security nightmare.
Asia-Pacific nations were also grappling with a US-backed proposal to create a vast, region-wide free-trade zone.
The idea, however, has encountered resistance at APEC, where many members want to preserve the group's non-binding principles.

STORYLINE:
The annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit gives one special city a week on the world stage each year.
This year it's the South Korean port city of Busan which is doing everything it can to make a good impression on visiting delegates.
On Friday, the spouses of APEC leaders will get a tour of Beomeo Temple, one of the country's five most important temples.
They will be greeted by the Head Priest, tour the halls and take part in a traditional tea ceremony.
Many foreign tourists also come to enjoy Busan's beaches.
Busan's mayor hopes that the area's natural beauty, the many activities available and modern facilities will make his city an attractive convention destination.
The Bexco convention centre, where ASEAN is being held, also hosted the draw for the 2002 World Cup.
During the APEC summit, leaders, delegates and the press will be treated to a variety of cultural exhibitions meant to show off Korean culture.
Food, music, books and arts and crafts are featured throughout the main hall.
Busan claims to have the fifth busiest port in the world, with hi-tech equipment to keep it efficient.
It has a 128-year history and is working to develop an international logistics and business hub.
A new port is also being built to handle the overflow expected as Busan gets busier.
The city's residents are proud of where they live and hope that foreign visitors will go home with a positive impression.
