Russian ballet theatre sees surge in audience numbers during World Cup
(24 Jun 2018) With the World Cup opening Russia up to visitors from all over the world, ballet theatres are also selling out tickets.
In the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, the State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre was sold out on Friday for a performance of the classical romantic ballet Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky, who wrote the ballet in 1871.
The ballet has been performed in theatres all around the world, but many would argue it is performed best in Russia, with standards there known for being among the most rigorous in the world.
Friday's performance attracted football fans from Japan, France and Peru.
One of the ballerinas at the theatre, Ekaterina Sapogova, said when a performance coincided with a football match, those at the theatre expected many empty seats.
But many people still showed up, which is great, she said.
Football-mania is sweeping across many Russian cities, especially after Russia won their first two matches against Saudi Arabia and Egypt, raising expectations that Russia may also be a rising star in football.
I am proud of Russia. Probably, other people will judge whether football or ballet is better in Russia, but I think it is important to know how to win everywhere, said Igor Bulitzin, another Russian ballet dancer who performs in Swan Lake at the theatre.
According to Slava Samodyrov, the creative director at the theatre, the World Cup has definitely swelled interest in Russian ballet, judging by the attendance of football tourists looking for a more refined cultural experience in the country.

Spielzeit 2015/16 - Ballett Dortmund
DER NUSSKNACKER
Ballett von Benjamin Millepied
Musik von Peter I. Tschaikowsky
Dortmunder Erstaufführung
Weihnachten.

Protest against St Petersburg cathedral handover
(12 Jan 2017) In the latest scandal involving the powerful Russian Orthodox Church, authorities in St. Petersburg on Thursday defended a controversial decision to give a city landmark cathedral to the church.
Museum experts and locals in Russia's former imperial capital were rattled by the governor's announcement this week that he was transferring St. Isaac's Cathedral to the church.
An online petition against the decision had tens of thousands of signatures by Thursday.
The neoclassical church, completed in the 19th century, has been an important museum since Russia's 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and is now the city's third most visited site.
Some museum experts are concerned that the Orthodox Church will neglect its exhibits, which include a rare Foucault pendulum.
Mikhail Mokretsov, deputy governor of Russia's second-largest city, on Thursday vowed that the city hall will make sure that tourists get unfettered access to the site.
He said the city will retain its ownership of the cathedral and will shoulder maintenance costs while the church will get operational rights.
The Church says that visitors will not even notice the difference when the church begins to operate St. Isaac's.
But opposition St. Petersburg legislative council deputy Boris Vishnevsky said the move meant taxpayers were forking out for the Russian Orthodox Church to take 'donations', that were in turn tax-free.
Why do they have to pay for the maintenance of a cathedral which will belong to the Russian Orthodox Church?, he said.
Although St. Isaac's was built as an Orthodox cathedral, it has always owned by the government except for a brief period.
Opposition lawmakers and activists plan to protest on Friday against the decision, which they see as part of a growing trend toward social conservatism in Russia.
The Russian Orthodox Church has played an active part in President Vladimir Putin's efforts to consolidate Russian society by appealing to traditional values as opposed to Western liberalism.
The church's attempts to expand its influence have sometimes caused controversy, however.
On Wednesday, a senior Orthodox cleric in Siberia, the Metropolitan of Novosibirsk, Tikhon, lashed out at the local opera and ballet theatre for staging the classic Christmas ballet, The Nutcracker, which he insisted was based on an occult subject.
In 2015, Tikhon protested against Wagner's opera Tannhauser.
Several months later the Russian culture minister fired the theatre's director and the opera was removed from the theatre's repertoire.

World-class ballerina shares lessons with Lao dancers
The British-American ballerina Maria Sascha Khan on Friday led a class of young dancers and gave advice on techniques to students at the National School of Arts in Vientiane.
She also gave a performance of the Lilac Fairy Variation from the popular Sleeping Beauty ballet.
Ms Khan gave a public class to the ballet students, watched by an audience including representatives of the British Embassy, the administration board of the National School of Arts, teachers, students, and members of the public.
She said she was delighted to be in Laos and to lead theballet class.
Ms Khan is currently an International Guest Artist in London and this is her first visit to Laos, supported by the British Embassy, Panyathip International School and the Crowne Plaza Vientiane.
During her short time in Laos she led classes and gave inspirational talks and interviews.
Her five-day programme in Vientiane included a day at Panyathip International School, where she talked about her career and held a dance class with elementary school children.
On Saturday she gave an inspiring talk at the Crowne Plaza during a workshop with young Lao dancers and artists, facilitated by Global Shapers Vientiane.
Her visit comes at a time when ballet is becoming increasingly popular in Laos. Local schools are starting to offer more and more classes and Panyathip International School will start the first classes accredited by the Royal Academy of Dance from the UK this summer.
Ms Khan comes from a family of artists. She and her three siblings are all classical ballet dancers.
She trained under Luidmila Morkovina at the Kirov Academy of Ballet, Washington DC, and subsequently at the Academie de Danse Classique de Princesse Grace, Monte Carlo. She graduated with honours under the personal mentorship of the Academie’s Russian directress Marika Besobrasova.
Ms Khan attended the Royal Ballet School, San Francisco Ballet and American Ballet Theatre summer programmes on scholarships.
In her graduate year, she was invited to join the Staatsballet Berlin, ranked one of the top five companies in the world.
After performing a wide repertoire of both classical and contemporary works, she continued her career with the Bayerisches Staatsballett in Munich, the English National Ballet in London, and as a Principal Dancer with the Ekaterinburg State Ballet, Russia.
Currently based in London as an international guest artist she is developing a new full length ballet titled “Warrior of Light” featuring herself and her three siblings.
An excerpt of the ballet recently premiered as a highlight of the prestigious Russian Icons Gala at the London Coliseum, and will premiere in full in 2019. The ballet is based on the life of Russian painter Nicolas Roerich, who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Ms Khan strongly believes in the power of the arts to unite people and cultures. Her passion is to give back and inspire others through the beauty of the arts.

At present the Government is grappling with two issues in this sphere. On the one hand, it is drafting additional legislation and on the other hand, economic validation is being provided. We are looking for sources of funding to create the necessary start-up capital for the insurance system. It is insufficiently developed today. Regarding schools. It is a separate topic which is even more important for the state. Insurance has no place here. We can use only direct financing. This is particularly true of the secondary school, more than of higher education. The school is in a difficult situation, just like the housing and utilities sector because it is in the hands of municipal authorities, which dont have sufficient budget revenues to maintain schools in proper conditions. Was it Sverdlovsk?
YEKATERINA ANDREYEVA: Yekaterinburg.
VLADIMIR PUTIN: I think the Yekaterinburg Region has the only school in Russia which is on strike. And yet Yekaterinburg is a high-revenue region, it is a net contributor to the federal budget. Why does it happen? Because there are certain problems in bringing support from the national and regional level to the municipal level, including support of schools.I think that problem can and must be solved. And I have prepared a decree, which I am going to sign before the end of the year. It is a very soft decree, but it recommends the heads of the Russian regions to introduce targeted subsidies for schools to maintain their facilities and material resources and the salaries of teachers. The federal budget will help the regions for its part.
PAVEL GAMOV (Orenburg): My name is Pavel Grigoryevich Gamov, I am a pensioner and I live in Orenburg. I have a question that worries me very much. How do you account for the fact that the courts pass long prison sentences for minor crimes while not using other means of punishment envisaged by the criminal law?
VLADIMIR PUTIN: Pavel Grigoryevich, you have touched a sore spot, you put your finger on it. The problem is there: it is a distortion of the governments crime control policy. The policy is set forth in the Criminal Code and we should see how to change it.Nothing like it happens in other democratic countries. Minor crimes of course can be punished in ways that do not involve imprisonment. At the same time court rulings regarding people who have committed serious crimes must be enforced. And the state must be consistent. The government has been given this task and we will tackle it.
YEKATERINA ANDREYEVA (reads out a question online): Petrov, an entrepreneur in Moscow, and Andrei Cherkashin, a journalist: are you aware that there is a popular new phrase, the cover market and that representatives of the law enforcement bodies are in the top spot in this criminal rating? What is the national government going to do to conquer the most powerful mafia in the land?
VLADIMIR PUTIN: I am aware of the problem, and there are no easy solutions. I am sure there are many questions on this topic, which is very close to the topic of corruption. In general, corruption and abuse of power, especially in the law enforcement sphere, is not unique to Russia. It is a scourge of many countries. But in Russia it has acquired a certain scale that the government cannot ignore. In order to solve this problem the situation in society as a whole must be changed, in economics and in the education sphere. But meaningful administrative decisions are also needed. One way to tackle this problem is to strengthen the law enforcement agencies and reform the courts. This is the aim of the package of laws on the reform of the judiciary which seeks to strengthen the courts, to make them more independent, on the one hand, and more accountable to society and the government, on the other hand. As you know, the Criminal Procedural Code is due to come into force next year, and under its provisions no citizen can be interrogated even when detained, not arrested, but simply detained, in the absence of a lawyer. So, if beginning from July 1 next year somebody detains you in the street, he has no right to interrogate you in the absence of your lawyer if you demand that a lawyer be present.
