Historical landmark and scenic spot with panoramic views.

The Nu'uanu Pali Lookout is one of the most stunning views of Oahu's Ko'olau Mountain Range.
Located just a short 5-mile drive from downtown Honolulu, this lookout offers some of the best views on Oahu. From here you can spot Kailua town as well as Kaneohe Bay and, of course, the breathtaking Ko'olau Mountains. One word of warning, however: The wind will literally knock you off your feet at this spot if you're not prepared, so take off your hats and hold on to the kids! Aside from its obvious beauty, this spot is the site of one of King Kamehameha's most gruesome victories.

Hawaii Driving | HI-61 Pali Hwy | Honolulu, Kaneohe, Oahu, Hawaii, USA
Aloha!~
I drove to HI-61 Pali Hwy.
Hawaii Route 61, often called the Pali Highway, is in Honolulu County, Hawaii, United States, that is the main highway connecting downtown Honolulu with the windward side of Oʻahu island.
Nu‘uanu Pali Lookout
The Pali Lookout is currently closed indefinitely due to rock slide damage to the Pali Highway in February 2019. Recently the Hawaii DOT has reopened both sides of the Pali Highway, but the Nu‘uanu Pali Lookout will still remain closed
Pali Highway Closure
Multiple landslides occurred in two separate areas. One location is in the Kailua bound direction after the second tunnel. The second location is in between the two tunnels and impacted the Honolulu bound direction. The Old Pali Road was also damaged in the landslide sending pieces of concrete down with the slide.
Although it was partially open, it hadn't been open for nearly six months.

Places to see in ( Oahu - USA ) Nuuanu Pali Lookout
Nuʻuanu Pali is a section of the windward cliff of the Koʻolau mountain located at the head of Nuʻuanu Valley on the island of Oʻahu. It has a panoramic view of the windward coast of Oʻahu. The Pali Highway (Hawaii State Highway 61) connecting Kailua/Kāneʻohe with downtown Honolulu runs through the Nuʻuanu Pali Tunnels bored into the cliffside. The area is also the location of the Nuʻuanu Freshwater Fish Refuge and the Nuʻuanu Reservoir in the jurisdiction of the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources.
The Nuʻuanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout above the tunnels where there is a panoramic view of the Oʻahu's windward side with views of Kāneʻohe, Kāneʻohe Bay, and Kailua. It is also well known for strong trade winds that blow through the pass (now bypassed by the Nuʻuanu Pali Tunnels). The Nuʻuanu Pali Tunnels were built in 1958. Before this road opened, people would use the what is now known as the Old Pali Road. The Old Pali Route is now a popular hiking route.
The Nuʻuanu Reservoir is located up the Nuʻuanu Pali heading towards Kailua, in the valley jungle. This small body of water holds various species of catfish, and peacock bass. In efforts towards preserving the reservoir, appointments must be made half a year prior to the visiting date. This ensures a controlled number of residents that fish out of the waters, preventing overfishing. A fresh water game fishing license and an entry fishing card are required to fish there. There is a two fish per license limit, and any catfish that is 16 inches or larger must be kept.
The trail to Nuʻuanu began at Kalanikahua and led north of Kaumakapili Church to below the stream which flowed out of Kamanuwai pond. There the trail turned slightly to the right, went along the edge of the pond, and down into the water. Then, coming up on the bank onto Waiakemi, it led on to Waakekupua, along the bank of the taro patches, to the Pauoa stream, up to Pualoalo, and on to the gap at Nuʻuanu Pali.
Two large stones near the back of Nuʻuanu Valley, Hapuʻu and Ka-lae-hau-ola, were said to represent a pair of goddesses who were guardians of the passage down the pali. Travellers would leave offerings of flowers or kapa (bark cloth) to ensure a safe trip, and parents buried the umbilical cords of newborns under the stones as a protection against evil.
It is said there is a moʻo wahine (lizard woman) who lingers around the pass. A moʻo wahine is mythical creature who takes the form of a beautiful woman and leads male travelers to their deaths off the cliff. She is similar to a western poltergeist or mermaid.
Hawaiian folklore holds that people should never carry pork over Nuʻuanu Pali, especially at night. Pele (a more powerful and influential goddess than the moʻo wahine) was said to be responsible for this to prevent the passage of pork over the Pali. It was said Pele, the volcano goddess, was responsible for preventing passage due to her contest with Kamapua'a, a half human, half hog god, and would not allow him (in the form of pork) to trespass on her side of the island.

Heritage Site - Nuuanu Pali Lookout
The Pali Lookout is a site of deep historical significance. Named Pali meaning 'cliff' in Hawaiian, the Pali Lookout is the site of the Battle of Nuuanu, where in 1795 King Kamehameha I won the struggle that finally united Oahu under his rule.

Statue of King Kamehameha I
A great warrior, diplomat and leader, King Kamehameha I united the Hawaiian Islands into one royal kingdom in 1810 after years of conflict. You can still visit the Nuuanu Pali Lookout, the site of the Battle of Nuuanu, a crucial conflict that helped Kamehameha conquer Oahu.
Kamehameha’s unification of Hawaii was significant not only because it was an incredible feat, but also because under separate rule, the islands may have been torn apart by competing western interests. Today, four commissioned statues stand to honor King Kamehameha I, Hawaii’s first king.
The most recognized Kamehameha statue stands in front of Aliiolani Hale (home to the Hawaii State Supreme Court) across from Iolani Palace and a short walk from historic Kawaiahao Church and the State Capitol. Dedicated in 1883, this was actually the second statue created after the ship delivering the original statue from Europe was lost at sea near Cape Horn. This original statue was later found and was erected in North Kohala on the island of Hawaii near King Kamehameha’s birthplace. The third statue of him is located in Hilo on the island of Hawaii, and the fourth is in Washington D.C.
Sculpted by Thomas Gould in Florence, this 18-foot bronze statue of Kamehameha is one of Oahu’s most photographed landmarks. On the Friday closest to June 11 (Kamehameha Day), this statue is ceremoniously draped with wreaths of flower lei to celebrate Hawaii’s greatest king.

The Pali Lookout is a site of deep historical significance. This fierce battle claimed hundreds of soldiers’ lives, many of which were forced off of the Pali’s sheer cliffs.
Note that the Pali Lookout is also known for its strong and howling winds. You’ll understand why the Nuuanu Pali Lookout is one of Oahu’s best scenic points when you feel the wind push up against you, hear the winds whistle through the mountains.

On Oahu, Hawaii. Near Honolulu is the Interstate H-3, or commonly abbreviated simply as H3 (AKA the John A. Burns Freeway)
H-3 is one of the most expensive Interstate Highways ever built, on a cost-per-mile basis. Its final cost was $1.3 billion, or approximately $80 million per mile.
Eventually ending up at the Nuuanu Pali Lookout. A thousand feet above Oahu's coastline!

Best Views of Hawaii | Oahu Mountains | Manoa Falls | Diamond Head & Nu’Uanu Pali Lookout
My trip to Hawaii was truly a once in a lifetime experience! I got to hike and see some unforgettable natural scenery. I never imagined the Young Marine Program would take me to a place like this.
The first location is Nu’uanu ali Lookout. The wind constantly blows there.
The second location is Manoa Falls. It was about a 2 mile hike to get to but was certainly worth the trek.
The third spot was Diamond Head State Monument.
The final destination was along the Oahu mountain range.
I filmed everything with either my Iphone 8 or GoPro Hero 6. I recorded almost everything in 4K attempting to capture the stunning views. Truly the pictures don't do it justice. You really have to go to experience it. Regardless, I hope you enjoyed the video.

A few more videos will be coming to show the rest of the trip.
