Nyaung Shwe is a town a few kilometers north of Inle Lake in the Shan State of Myanmar. It is located south of Sakangyi and southwest of Taunggyi. Bawrithat Pagoda lies in the southern part of the town.
Nyaung Shwe is the tourist hub for visiting Inle Lake. It consists of one main thoroughfare with numerous side streets and a few parallel roads. The main street has numerous shops, several restaurants, a few stupas, travel agencies and a market (located behind the storefronts). Near the end of this road, a bridge crosses the river channel near an impressive mirror-tiled stupa.

Song of Travel Hostel|Inle Lake | Myanmar
Good morning from Nyaungshwe, Myanmar.
Inle: Spirits of the Lake
Casting down the tranquil, sinewy waterways of Myanmar's Inle Lake is one of the best routes to take in the country’s mysterious, rich culture at work, as daily life glides by.
Due to its tourism draw, the once sleepy village of Nyaungshwe has been put on the map – in big bold letters – and is now something of a tourism center, with plenty of restaurants, hotels, and other tourism facilities to add convenience (and unfortunately remove some authenticity) to travelers’ experience in the region.
Still, despite its popularity (I normally prefer less popular spots), Inle Lake is one of my favorite places in Myanmar. This is because it’s still possible to explore areas just a few hours from the “hot spot,” where tourists are sparse and the experiences are authentic. Join me on my latest journey on the lake, and take in the amazing temples, beautiful scenery and most importantly the people that live here.

Inle Lake--from Nyaungshwe to Phaungdaw Oo Paya Pagoda
This video starts out on the canal leading from Nyaungshwe to Inle Lake. At about 2:20 of the video, we see one of the famous fishermen of Inel Lake preparing to drop his cone shapped net. Other scenes of one-legged rowers are included along with shots of lake traffic. At around 5:00 of the vidoe, the Phaungdaw Oo Paya Pagoda comes into view.
Slow Train from Thazi to Inle Lake
This video was shot aboard the Slow Train from Thazi on the way to Inle Lake, Myanmar (Burma). While very much on the long side, this is an incredibly scenic ride and presents the opportunity to interact with local Burmese people as they travel from town to town. The video includes stops in several villages as well as of food vendors who board the train, set up shop in the isle and ride for several stations. Our journey ended in Kalaw but this train continues to Shenyang, the station serving Inle Lake.
