【Cycling in Ireland】Boston Co. Clare 【Raleigh Royal】
Boston is a village in north County Clare, Ireland. It is situated off R460 the Corrofin to Gort regional road, at the northeastern edge of the Burren National Park, and close to the border with County Galway. The village is situated in the parish of Kilkeedy, the main settlement of which is the County Clare portion of the village of Tubber.
The name Boston is most likely to have been originally a nickname or ironic reference to what was described in 1839 as a few cabins situated on the property of the Marquis of Thomond, while the Irish name, Móinín na gCloigeann (little meadow or bog of the skulls), appears to be a mistaken transfer from that of another place, also called Boston in English, near Cratloe in the south of the county.
The ruins of Cluain Dubháin Castle and Skaghard Castle can be found near Lough Bunny. Today, the ruins of the castle are a reminder of the past sieges endured by its previous occupants. Mahon O'Brien defended the castle for three months, before being killed by a musket ball during a siege of the castle laid by Richard Bingham in 1586.

Good Shepherd Convent & Magdalene Laundry, Cork, Ireland
Reportage slideshow of photographs taken at the now derelict St. Mary's Good Shepherd Convent & Magdalene Laundry, Cork, Ireland.
Built in 1881, the Good Shepherd Convent was the site of an orphanage and a Magdalene Laundry until the late 1970s.
The three main buildings - a home, convent, and orphanage - have been in a derelict condition since a serious fire in 2003. The laundry building was among a number of buildings that were destroyed in that fire.
Magdalen Asylums grew out of the rescue movement in Britain and Ireland the 19th century, which had as its formal goal the rehabilitation of women who had worked as prostitutes. It has been estimated that around 30,000 women were admitted during the 150-year history of these institutions, often against their will. The last Magdalen Asylum in Ireland closed on September 25, 1996. In Ireland, the institutions were named after Mary Magdalene, a character in the Bible who repented her sins and became one of Jesus' closest followers.
As the phenomenon became more widespread, it extended beyond prostitution, to unmarried mothers. Even young girls who were considered too promiscuous and flirtatious were sometimes sent to the Asylum. This paralleled the practice in State Run asylums in Britain and Ireland in the same period, where many people with social dysfunction were committed to asylums.
The women were typically admitted to these institutions at the request of family members or priests. Without a family member on the outside who would vouch for them, some penitents would stay in the asylums for the rest of their lives, many of them taking religious vows.
The existence of the Irish asylums was of little thought of until, in 1993, an order of nuns in Dublin sold part of their convent to a real estate developer. The remains of 155 residents, which had been buried in unmarked graves on the property, were exhumed and, except for one body, cremated and reburied in a mass grave in Glasnevin Cemetery. This triggered a public scandal and became local and national news. In 1999 Mary Norris, Josephine McCarthy and Mary-Jo McDonagh, all asylum residents, gave accounts of their treatment. The 1997 Channel 4 documentary Sex in a Cold Climate interviewed former inmates of Magdalene Asylums who testified to continued sexual, psychological and physical abuse while being isolated from the outside world for an indefinite amount of time. Allegations about the conditions of the convents and the treatment of the inmates of the Irish asylums were made in the film The Magdalene Sisters (2002), written and directed by Peter Mullan - a film which has been both acclaimed and criticised.

Karen Underwood and John O'Brien Present Of Ladies Lost and Found
Chicago born Karen Underwood offers a concert that celebrates the lives of remarkable divas who left us too soon but whose music lives on. Following on the success of her Irish tour The Nina in Me and Singing Nina accompanied by John O’Brien, Karen now brings her audience to the heart of the pain and love found in the lives of Billy Holiday, Nina Simone, Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse, and others who were lost and found.
Together these two talented musicians pack quite the musical, and emotional, punch.
Shot by Southerman Films.
“John O’Brien is one of the key people behind what might be Cork’s golden age of opera and musical theatre. Whether as conductor, musician, director or arranger, he has brought ambition and inspiration to dozens of productions. Nowadays, any time O’Brien makes new work, it’s big news.” Irish Examiner, November 2013.
On Karen Underwood: “Incredible” Pat Kenny, “Amazing” Tom Dunne, “Wonderful interpretation of black is the colour” Vincent Woods RTE, “Her rendition of strange fruit is worth the ticket price alone” Evening Echo.
