John O'Connell - Carlton Football Club Past Player
John O'Connell was a product of the Carlton U/19's, with 1967 being his first year at the club as a 17 year old. He came to the Blues via local clubs Glenroy YCW, St Marks and then Fawkner. A tenacious back pocket in Carlton's 1972 Premiership team, Johnny O'Connell played 111 games for the Blues without scoring a goal. He started his career at Carlton with the Under 19's as a centreman or ruck-rover, and worked his way up to make his senior debut in 1970.
Wearing the number 50 guernsey, he managed 11 games in his debut year. He was 19 years old, 183 cm tall and 82 kg; ideal for the positions he cherished in the Blues' senior team. But then as now, every spot in the side had to earnt by merit and by sweat. With stars like Jesaulenko, Crosswell and Armstrong in his way, he was a regular reserve until late in the year, when coach John Nicholls offered him a chance in the back pocket. Playing alongside champion full-back Geoff Southby, with either David McKay or Vin Waite in the opposite pocket, O'Connell found his niche at last.
As season 1972 dawned, O'Connell changed to guernsey number 19 and began a long and productive combination with Southby in the Carlton defence. Like Southby, he loved to back himself and run off his opponent. Both were among Carlton's best when the Blues destroyed Richmond in the '72 Grand Final.
