A terminally ill veteran of the United States Air Force had one final wish, to see the newly released and highly anticipated “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” and thanks to a thoughtful community, that man’s wish came true.
Ron Villemaire, 69, is a massive Star Wars fan. However, he is currently in hospice care in Bedford, New Hampshire, after being diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer earlier this year.
It was the Vietnam veteran’s wish to see the 10th installment in the multi-billion dollar franchise, however, the pain caused by cancer makes Villemaire unable to sit in the movie theater seats
So, Villemaire’s daughter Elizabeth Ngo took to Twitter and asked if anyone would be willing to pull a few strings and help her father see the film from the comfort of his hospital bed.
The magnificence of the internet took over with Ngo’s plea spreading across social media as well as her community, sparking the hashtag “#RonsLastJedi.”
The community came together to surprise Villemaire with a trip to a nearby movie theater to see the film of his dreams while never leaving his bed.
The journey began with a costumed Darth Vader surprising Villemaire at his bedside, summoning him to the theater.
“Ron Villemaire,” the costumed Vader said. “You have been summoned by the Emperor.”
Local first responders then escorted the Vietnam veteran to O’Neil Cinemas in nearby Epping, where he was met at the theater with applause from a cast of characters from the film.
This is awesome,” Villemaire told WMUR.
“We’re also big Star Wars fans and we could help him,” the theater’s owner Kelly O’Neil stated. “I think any time you can help someone you should.”
Members of local fire departments told WMUR that they wanted to make sure Villemaire was “comfortable” during the priceless moment.
“Our role here is to make sure he is comfortable, and he is able to enjoy this experience,” said Dan Macdonald, the New Boston Fire Chief.
Bedford Fire Chief Scott Hunter added: “You can’t put a price on it right? I mean it’s something that a need arises, and all these people jump in to make sure it happened.”
As reported by WMUR, the theater gave Villemaire and his family private theater time so they could enjoy the moment together — a moment Ngo said was “incredible.”
“I never would’ve believed it would’ve turned out like this,” Ngo said. “I mean this is incredible.”
When asked about the experience, Villemaire took the focus off of him and put the spotlight on God and the generous individuals who helped his dream come true.
“I hope that God will bless each and every single one of them just the way I feel blessed right now because he’s definitely with me right now,” Villemaire told WMUR before raising his hand to the sky. “Thank God for Star Wars fans.”
