West Fork Backpacking - Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Arizona
Recent trip to West Fork in Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, AZ. We absolutely love this place. It's hard to believe a place like West Fork exists in the middle of the desert here in AZ, but I'm not complaining.

Slide Rock State Park Sedona Oak Creek Canyon Arizona
Slide Rock State Park is located about 7 miles north of Sedona, Arizona along Highway 89A in Oak Creek Canyon which has been named One of America's Most Scenic Drives. If you love picnicking and water recreation in astoundingly beautiful landscape, this is a natural attraction you don't want to miss. Get ready for a blast for the whole family. When summer arrives, lucky folks from the desert cities flock to this cool paradise. Slide Rock gets its name after a natural water slide that gradually descends down Oak Creek. Rocks and boulders that have been worn smooth over millions of years by flowing water line the bottom of the creek forming a slippery natural water chute.
The fun and excitement never ends as swimmers briskly slide down the chute until it levels out and then they trek back to the starting point and do it again and again. There are places where cliff jumping into deep water pools is a blast. If you plan on swimming and sliding down Slide Rock, wear old tennies and a pair of old cutoff jeans. It's wise to take a change of clothes. Picnic Recreation At Slide Rock
It is beautiful here with red rock cliffs and canyon walls rising from the creek. Slide Rock State Park is more fun than just frolicking in the water. The park includes picnic tables, restrooms, volleyball courts, and even a market that sells snacks, picnic supplies and even apples that grow in the nearby orchards. Apple tree blossoms arrive in mid-April and apples are harvested in September and October.
Fishing is permitted in Oak Creek that contains Rainbow Trout. A fishing license is required. There are short hiking trails around the creek that meander through unspoiled back country views and the old Pendley homestead built in 1907.
There are cliffs west of the creek that will reward you with views down Oak Creek Canyon. And when you're done chuting the slide, hiking, eating and there is still daylight, swim or just relax in the refreshing water pools along Oak Creek.

A drive through Sedona, AZ and up Oak Creek Canyon
I filmed our drive from west Sedona through uptown and on up Oak Creek Canyon. I know the views are limited but it gives you an idea of how much glorious scenery there is in every direction. My mom has lived here for 30 years and is moving back to the east coast. Memories!

Sedona: Day 1 - Highway 89A - Oak Creek Canyon
It was mostly cloudy our first day in Sedona, which made for flat light on the red rock walls. So we drove out and back to the overlook on Highway 89A, concentrating on models that would show best in shadows: water, flowers and such. It was also a good day to hike around because we were spared the heat of sunny days.

Oak Creek Canyon | Sedona AZ
Me and Sav head to Oak Creek Canyon during our recent trip to Sedona for some fun on the lake.
Oak Creek Canyon is a river gorge located in northern Arizona between the cities of Flagstaff and Sedona. The canyon is often described as a smaller cousin of the Grand Canyon because of its scenic beauty. State Route 89A enters the canyon on its north end via a series of hairpin turns before traversing the bottom of the canyon for about 13 miles (21 km) until the highway enters the town of Sedona. The Oak Creek Canyon–Sedona area is second only to Grand Canyon as the most popular tourist destination in Arizona.

Backpacking West Fork - Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Arizona 2019
Backpacking West Fork - Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Arizona
West Fork is one of the most amazing backpacking and hiking destinations in Arizona. We're lucky enough to live close to this trail and make it a point to get there at least once a year. It's crowded. Really crowded. But if you backpack and aren't afraid to get your feet wet, once you get past the maintained trail (about 3 miles in), the crowds die off and the real beauty of the canyon starts to really show. Backpacking West Fork is a great adventure. If this place isn't on your bucket list, it should be.

“Let’s go” has pretty much been our life’s motto since we met nearly 25 years ago. We met in New York, moved to San Diego together, and married in Lake Tahoe – all within five months. When you know, you know – you know what we mean?
Now, after raising two adventure-seeking boys, we are ready to get out and explore some more. Our children have begun their lives and now it’s time to begin the second-half of ours.
We wanted a challenge and something fun, so we are starting an adventure of a lifetime. We’re calling it #60×60. Our plan is to travel to 60 countries by the time Kim turns 60 (that’s in 6 years by the way).
