DIY Steadicam Test #2 - Oak Forest, Harcourt AUS - Bowheart Stabiliser Prototype 0.8
A 1.5 minute walking shot through the Oak Forest at Harcourt, Victoria Australia. Main aim was to test the tilt capabilites of my Bowheart Camera Stabiliser Prototype 0.8
Technically very rough (instability and focus issues) but the spirit of the piece shines through ...
Unconsciously, as in the the first of these camera tests, I have gravitated towards a theme of gateways to consciousness.

CAMERA STABILISER INFO:
The Bowheart camera stabiliser is a much larger and more rugged DIY version of a Steadicam Merlin, suitable for a range of camcorders and DSLR's. The Bowheart system weighs in at around 4kg total (includes maximum 1.4kg camera payload plus 7 monitor and batteries). The rig is hand-held (i.e. no vest or supporting arm). It definitely pushes the upper limits of the human arm but, in so doing, also achieves the maximum inertia capable with the Merlin-style geometry.
The Bowheart prototype at April 2012 was about 80% functional and obviously exhibited some stiffness in the bearing due to the overloaded and uncentred plastic universal joint (Traxxas 5151) which needs to be upgraded to a metal joint. Further vibration dampening will be added in the next development phase.
SHOT COMMENTARY:
This shot shows up much greater instability in the walking action than in the previous camera test (#1 Chinese Precinct, Bendigo). This is partly due to faster walking motion, rougher ground and a lower setting of in-built camera stabilisation. This shot shows greater tendency to rolling than shot #1 which is puzzling as the rig had very similar drop-time, dynamic balance and payload.
The radical tilts while walking included 45 degress upwards and almost 90 degrees downwards with final lock off with the mushroom at dead centre. These worked very satisfactorily.
Focus tends to drift in some patches, perhaps due to the low light levels (as this was shot very late on an overcast afternoon and possibly that the camera was set to an auto setting of portrait (i.e. shallow depth of field) rather than landscape (i.e. deep depth of field).
I did four takes of the shot, and this was the first.
CAMERA INFO:
The camera was a Sony HX9V with a lot of extra ballast. Recording mode was 1080/50p at the widest angle lens setting of 4.28mm (i.e. 24mm full frame equivalent). Auto exposure and auto focus. (See not above on poor focus performance.)
Extensive dynamic primary colour correction on Sony Vegas 10 to match radical exposure shifts during the shot. Also short final close-up of the mushroom involved selective dynamic secondary colour desaturation.
Approximately 10% of extra electronic image stabilisation was applied in Sony Vegas, resulting in a slight cropping of the image.
Note: In-built camera stabilisation cannot be disabled on the HX9V and was set to standard which may have masked some micro vibrations in the Bowheart stabiliser system. Further tests need to be carried out to verify these effects and ideal settings.

Campaspe River Walk / Kyneton Botanical Gardens Victoria Aerial video
I recently went to the Kyneton Botanic Gardens and flew a few batteries around. Unfortunately all the great looking stuff was facing the sun and so there's a lot of shots where you can see the sun flicker through the props. There was so much more footage I wanted to use where it was much worse.

gulpa island birds
'gulpa island birds'
@ Federation Square.
For two weeks, sunrise and sunset, Federation Square was enveloped with the sound of birds from all over the world.
Sound and visuals captured from a recent family holiday expressed the happiness, myself, two children and the birds felt, as water returned to the Barmah-Millewa forest wetlands, after fifteen years of drought.
Audiences shared in the beautiful adherent adventure of our natural environment, as nature was amplified, speaking for itself.
'Gulpa Island Birds' gave audiences the opportunity to imagine, whilst celebrating family, environment and the emergent enquiry.
This fifteen-minute work was comprised of the sound of almost twenty species of wildlife. These sounds were complimented with images of Barmah-Millewa forest as well as the associated story of our family adventure.
This site-specific work utilised the existing sound and visual
infrastructure of both the Main Square and Atrium of Federation Square, connecting the two spaces as the work played concurrently in both areas.
The birds were individually identified by Chris Tzaros, Conservation Manager, Birds Australia and placed on a timeline as to when they were heard in the sound work. This timeline featured in the end
credits of the work.
Chris Tzaros also contributed bird photography to the image slideshow.
