Clubs & Organisations Visit Tiverton High School
STUDENTS got the chance to explore everything from the Moon to the bottom of the ocean when Tiverton's clubs and organisations visited the High School this week.
The event was hosted at the school and welcomed a wide range of activity groups and clubs into the hall during the lunch break on September 22.
It's hoped the event will promote youth activity in the town, and make young people aware of the opportunities available to them.
Among the activities taking place, students could try on deep sea diving gear from Tiverton Scuba Diving Club, pull out body parts from a dummy in a St John's Ambulance display and look through a telescope brought by the Mid Devon Astronomy Club.
Tiverton Mayor Cllr Lester Crocker has been keen to promote youth activities in the town during his tenure. He said the afternoon couldn't have gone better: It is everything I'd hope it would be. When I first had the idea it was backed by the High School, and this is the result.
We've had so many students come in and have a look, and pick up leaflets and learn more about what they can do in Tiverton.
I've spoken to some of the pupils here and they've loved it. They've all said they didn't realise there was so much to do in our town.

Cathedrals Express with 5029 Nunney Castle 01-07-10
We apologise for the late running of this video, this was caused by a computer failure in the power supply area.
Thursday 1st July's Cathedrals Express to Worcester was originally booked to run via Staines behind 34067 Tangmere but, when Tangmere proved unavailable, 5029 Nunney Castle was substituted instead. For a time the original routing to Reading remained and it looked as if we would see a Castle on the Southern but eventually the question of gauging arose and the train was re-routed via Slough. For some the train was further devalued by Network Rail's insistence that a diesel be coupled behind 5029 because of the fire risk caused by the prolonged dry weather.
With fairly fast timings and weekday traffic to contend with, we felt it was only possible to see the train once between London and the water stop at Challow and so it was off to the road bridge at Steventon. Not a great choice as it turned out but by then it was too late to find somewhere else.
From Steventon we moved on to the outskirts of Shrivenham. Although this looks like trespassing of the worst kind it is in fact a footpath crossing. Up until a few months ago the two stiles weren't even opposite each other and one had to walk some twenty yards along the track and step over the rails, now one of the stiles has been moved but there is still no proper access down the embankment and no boards between the rails.
Of the four HSTs that passed prior to the Castle, none gave any warning of their approach, or when they saw four people standing beside the track.
For the evening return we were back at Taplow, quiet and out of the way but close enough to the M4 to make it possible to race a train to somewhere like Kensington Olympia.
Guess where we went next!
Again the problem of gauging meant that 5029 was unable to enter Victoria and so the train terminated at Clapham Junction. From Clapham the official timings had the Castle pulling the empty stock back to Willesden via Barnes and Acton so, hoping that this hadn't been changed, we went to Barnes Bridge. We were not disappointed. An eight coach up local was barely out of sight when a whistle was heard from the Barnes direction and Nunney Castle made its way slowly through the station and out across the river bridge.
