City of Marion Oaklands and Warriparinga Wetlands
Construction of the $9 million Oaklands Wetland is nearing completion.
Once fully established, it will be capable of capturing, cleaning and storing up to 400 million litres of stormwater each year - the equivalent of 160 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Treated stormwater will be used to irrigate 31 reserves in the Marion Council area.
Another wetland, Warriparinga, is also based in the City of Marion and is home to the Living Kaurna Cultural Centre.
Warriparinga (meaning windy place by the river) is a unique site in the heart of Marion, known for its natural beauty, outdoors recreation, native plants and animals as well as a place for cultural and environmental education.
Oaklands Wetland cost more than $9 million with the City of Marion and the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board each contributing $2.66 million. The Australian Government provided $3.73 million through the Water for the Future initiative.

FMG Engineering together with project partners - Oaklands Wetland Stormwater Reuse Scheme
The Oaklands Wetland Stormwater Reuse Scheme is a $9M project to enable water security by harvesting stormwater to provide an alternative water supply for non-potable uses. This reduces reliance on traditional water resources such as the River Murray and Mount Lofty Ranges catchments. The project also reduces the impact of urban runoff on downstream waterways and coastal environments by capturing pollutants found in stormwater.
For more than 15 years, various scenarios for a wetland and water quality project have been suggested at the former Driver Development Centre site, bounded by Oaklands Estate Reserve to the south, Sturt River Drain to the west and Oaklands Road to the north. This project, funded in equal part through Federal, State and Local Government funding came to fruition as a stormwater harvesting and reuse project. Consultation, master planning and design took place from late 2011 and concluded in August 2012. Tenders were called with successful contracts let in November 2012. Construction commenced in earnest in January 2013 with works substantially completed in December 2013.
The project has created a managed aquifer recharge (MAR) capable of capturing, cleaning and storing up to 400 million litres (400ML) of stormwater each year, and has the capacity to distribute over 172ML of water for the irrigation of council parks.
The project is scalable with the distribution system design to be easily retrofitted to deliver twice this volume of water if future demand is secured. This will enable the City of Marion to reduce demand on potable or bore water for irrigation to their existing parks and reserves.
Surplus capacity may exist in the future, allowing council to consider third party customers. The wetland is a Water Farm turning storm water that would otherwise discharge to St Vincent Gulf into high quality water for irrigation use.
In addition, urban amenity will be improved from the constructed wetland, through the supply of recycled stormwater for irrigation to Council open spaces and sporting fields. This will result in greener reserves, encouraging community use of open spaces, and promoting healthier lifestyles through the greater Council area.

Stebonheath Curtis Wetland Fly Through
Located 40 minutes north of the Adelaide CBD at Munno Para in the City of Playford, the Stebonheath Curtis Wetlands are part of stage 2 of the Waterproofing Playford project and are due to open late 2013.
The wetlands utilise Smith Creek in order to capture, cleanse and harvest stormwater 300 mega litres (over 300 Olympic swimming pools) per year.
The water flows into the online capture basin and then gravity feeds into the wetland through a pipe that is over 1m in diameter. Gradually, water meanders through the wetland having all of the 'dirtiness' (suspended solids) removed naturally by use of reed beds and other aquatic plants. Once the water is has reached the end of its journey through the wetland it is ready to be injected into the aquifer for further treatment and later be removed for irrigation purposes. As well as being highly functional and serving to help improve the quality of the environment, the wetland provides a great public amenity.
Have a look at the video to see the site and how the wetlands will work.

Excerpt from a documentary that follows the creation of an aerosol art mural aimed at building mutual respect among the community and aerosol artists, as well as between Kaurna Aboriginal heritage and culture and European Settlement. Through a series of workshops participants were informed of local history, became involved in the design of the mural and learnt aerosol art skills. The resultant mural is a stunning piece of artwork that recognizes and pays homage to various aspects of Warriparinga. Commissioned by Government of South Australia & Marion City Council.
