Abstract Collage Demonstration - Oakville Artists Society
Welcome back to another BobBlast!
I have spent this past week at the Oakville Art Society - outside of Toronto, teaching a “Larger & Looser” workshop. The emphasis has been on abstract painting and collage.
This BobBlast is a demo from this Workshop - My intention was to create a paint collage from a concept out of my sketch book. My focus was on:
•Graphics - big, bold, patterned, pure color.
•Abstract Shapes - block out large shapes. Can also do reductive painting.
•Texture - Paper and acrylic paint “skins” from my palette - heavy duty plastic taped to my table.
Collage practice techniques for this assignment:
Acrylic Glue - I like Nova Color Gel Medium 207.
Disposable Squeegees - 1/4” foam board scraps, cut into 2” wide strips. Then into 5-8” to be used as scrapers, pushing down air bubbles, etc. They’re disposable! No clean up!
Black and White Graphic Patterns - I make my own collage papers, then make Xerox copies.
Surfaces - I will make a paint collage on any surface: 300 lb Watercolor Paper, canvas, wood panels - these heavier surfaces take a beating.
Theme or Concept - Search for the new in you! Use your sketch books for inspiration.
For me, collage is not about little pieces of paper glued on a canvas and serves the purpose as part of a mosaic technique. To be blunt, collage paper scraps are just one more added element to play and paint with. Nothing more, nothing less.
I want the slight texture and don’t try to hide the bubbles, wrinkles, etc. It’s what I work with - paint, glue, paper and my zest for making things that tell a story and have content.
Stick it!

15 John St Oakville Open House Video Tour
Welcome to 15 John Street, a stunning and rarely offered multi-level detached home situated within the Central Oakville community, and walking distance to the upscale shops and fine restaurants that downtown Oakville has to offer.
This home showcases a stucco exterior, as well as a concrete front patio/balcony that extends almost the width of the home, and which is finished with a stone facade and accent railing - with the stone arching above the covered entry into garage. The front yard has been professionally hard and soft scaped, and features beautiful perennial beds; stone and river rock accents; interlocking curbs along the driveway; as well as a stone walkway and steps to the covered front entry - where a wood front door with a nautical-inspired circular accent window invites you into a superbly finished main level.
The spacious front foyer has a large double coat closet and a state-tiled inset surrounded by maple hardwood flooring. The hardwood flooring flows throughout this level, which also features pot lighting; crown moldings; French door entries from the foyer and kitchen into the living/dining areas; staircases to the upper and lower levels with oak hardwood treads and rails, white risers and spindles, as well as the cushy comfort of a carpet runner; and an abundance of natural light streaming through oversized windows in all the principal rooms - while directly across from the second and lower level staircases, is a powder room with a slate-tiled floor and pedestal sink.
A richly hued accent wall adds a touch of elegance to the living and dining rooms - beautifully combined formal entertaining spaces warmed by a gas fireplace insert surrounded by granite, and enveloped with a creamy white mantle. Garden doors open to the front patio/balcony, while a huge window with transom on the opposite wall offers a full view of the back deck.
The open concept kitchen and breakfast area is both beautifully finished, and an exceptional work and family space. The maple cabinetry offers abundant storage, and also features molded uppers, valance lighting, and a huge pantry area. The centre island has breakfast seating and pendant lighting - and the kitchen also showcases granite counter tops, tumbled marble back splashes, stainless steel double under mount sink and built-in dishwasher, wall oven, and microwave, a separate gas cooktop with stainless steel range hood, as well as a wood-panelled fridge. From the breakfast area is a walk-out onto the raised back deck, a wonderful spot with privacy fencing and a railing, and ideal for summertime entertaining and relaxing.
The second level has maple hardwood floors in the landing and in the second bedroom - and off the landing (behind double doors) is a laundry area with washer and dryer. The third bedroom is finished with Berber broadloom, and both it and the third bedroom have double closets and large windows for plenty of natural lighting. These bedrooms share the 4-pc main washroom, which is finished with a ceramic-tiled floor and bath area.
The master bedroom is also finished with Berber broadloom, and this relaxing retreat also features a Juliet balcony; a walk-in closet; and a 3-pc ensuite washroom with a ceramic floor, wall-to-wall stone-topped vanity with vessel-style basin, as well as an oversized tiled shower with opaque glass door and bench seat.
The second level landing is additionally brightened light through a skylight above the staircase to the third (and uppermost) level, which showcases a private bedroom with laminate flooring, crown molding, a ceiling fan, space for a sitting/media area, as well as a walk-in closet.
The fully finished lower level features a 2-pc washroom with a slate-tiled floor and pedestal sink; a ceramic-tiled foyer area with a coat closet, as well as access to both the garage and a cold room; a combined mechanical/storage room; and a spacious family recreation area with cozy Berber broadloom, pot lighting, and crown moldings.
Within the catchment areas of numerous highly ranked public, Catholic and private schools, this home is also walking distance to Sixteen Mile Creek - which is surrounded Navy Flats, Busby, Shipyard, Lakeside, and Tannery Parks. Tannery Park has extensive walking trails, Lakeside Park is home to the Oakville Historical Society and the Oakville Museum, while the Oakville Lighthouse is by the Oakville Yacht Squadron situated along the creek with direct boating access to Lake Ontario. Other nearby amenities include the numerous shops and services along Lakeshore Road W, public transit, places of worship, sports and recreational facilities, as well as Westwood and Trafalgar Parks - while prestigious MacLachlan and Appleby Colleges, golf courses, Oakville Place Mall, the Oakville GO Station, and access to the QEW/Hwy 403 are just short drives away.
