When night falls in Oamaru, the little blue penguins in New Zealand return to shore and their nesting sites .They return in groups known as rafts for safety in numbers. If you go to the shore of Oamaru at dusk, then you have a good chance of spotting the little blue penguins in Oamaru. The place to see the most penguins is the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony.
The Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony is a special penguin-watching facility around an artificial nesting site where nesting boxes have been built and are usually occupied with around 130 breeding pairs of little blue penguins.
If you want to see penguins in New Zealand, then Oamaru is a fantastic place to add to your New Zealand travel itinerary.

BLUE PENGUINS IN OAMARU
在紐西蘭Oamaru看藍企鵝過馬路。一般來說，企鵝是很膽小的、會遠離人群干擾，但在這個小鎮旁卻有個企鵝保育區，也因此在鎮上住著一群可愛的藍企鵝，他們在夏天時的數量會達到最多，大約有二百隻左右。藍企鵝是全世界體形最小的企鵝，因此，為了躲避老鷹及狗等天敵的攻擊，他們都是趁天未亮前出海補抓食物，等到天黑才歸巢，在這邊幸好有路燈照明及f1.4大光圈鏡頭的加持下，才能補抓到這一段尚屬清晰的影像。

Moeraki is a tranquil little fishing village which was once used as a whaling station by early Europeans.
The Moeraki Boulders are unusually large and spherical boulders lying along a stretch of Koekohe Beach on the wave-cut Otago coast of New Zealand between Moeraki and Hampden.
The blue penguins return home from their day's fishing, make their way onto the beach, up a stony ramp, and cross into the Oamaru Colony.

Oamaru Blue Penquin Colony
See the world's smallest penguins, in their natural environment.
Oamaru Blue Penguins nest close to town under the cliffs along the Historic Harbour foreshore. The Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony is just beyond the Victorian Heritage Precinct and you are within walking distance of the town center, close to shops, restaurants and accommodation.
During the day penguins are not walking around on land, they are either out at sea fishing or hiding away in their nesting burrows. The day tours take you behind the scenes into the penguins breeding area where you may see the penguins up close in their burrows. The daytime viewing facility the 'blue wing' makes this easier as you look down into the top of 10 nesting boxes through viewing tunnels. Our penguin numbers vary from day to day so just ask one of the friendly staff how many they can guarantee you will see.
Evening viewing is when you will get to see the penguins arrive home from their days fishing, walk up the stony ramp in front of you and cross into the breeding colony. Recommended.
The Blue Penquin Colony have tours running from 10am to late so stop by and visit Oamaru's most unique residents. Its worth it.
