Tonbridge - Footpath near the Oast Theatre
Lot of people who are disabled cannot easily see what our footpaths are like. Here is this one anyway!
Tonbridge City centre in Kent England See traveller reviews tourist attractions
For lovers of culture, there are two theatres – the EM Forster Theatre at Tonbridge School and The Oast Theatre – and annual events including the town’s popular Food and Drink Festival (May), Tonbridge Carnival (June), Tonbridge Castle Music Weekend (July), Tonbridge Calling music festival (August) and the thrilling Dragon Boat Racing event on the river (September).
Tonbridge is overshadowed by its more glamorous neighbours, Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks, all too often. But this historic market town has a lot to shout about.
For a start it boasts some of the easiest commuting connections and best schools in the area – a fact which hasn’t been wasted on the many young professionals moving to the town to start families.
It also benefits from a stunning location, set on the banks of the River Medway, with an 11th-century castle at its heart and surrounded by beautiful countryside. Visitors are attracted by the popular indoor-outdoor swimming pool, as well as a multi award-winning country park, a superb, award-winning Farmers’ Market, regular community events and a new indoor trampoline centre.
There’s no doubt that 2016 was a year of exciting growth for Tonbridge. It’s true to say that in the past the town centre has suffered during difficult economic conditions but recent renovations in the High Street and several new housing developments have given it the boost it needed.

Heroes: Meet the Cast & Director
Meet the cast and director of Heroes by Gérald Sibleyras, translated by Tom Stoppard. Playing at The Oast Theatre from 15th –22nd November 2014. Visit oasttheatre.com to book.
Heroes is not a play about war. It is a wry comedy about three old soldiers; Henri, Philippe and Gustave, and a 200lb stone dog.
Set in a sanatorium, somewhere in France, the three men and the dog live out their humdrum lives on the terrace of the home. Although all heroes each has his weakness, Henri, as he puts it, has ‘one and a half legs’, Philippe keeps passing out due to a piece of shrapnel lodged in his brain and Gustave is afraid to venture beyond the gates of the home.
How could this be a comedy? Well it is. Tom Stoppard’s translation retains the wit and wry humour of the original, giving us an entertaining and fun evening at the Oast Theatre.
The Secret Lives of Henry and Alice
We caught up with the cast and director of The Secret Lives of Henry and Alice by David Tristram to hold a Q&A about this hilarious comedy.
Henry can be anyone from a comedian, to a sporting hero, a secret agent or even the Acting President of the United States. Life is rarely dull. Alice is a housewife and her life was rarely anything else – until she began to meet all these exciting and romantic men. No-one is sure how exactly this came about, except perhaps their pet goldfish, Orca!
Production runs at The Oast Theatre in Tonbridge from 18th –25th April. For more information and to book please visit oasttheatre.com.
The Thrill of Love: Meet the Cast & Director
Meet the cast and director of The Thrill of Love by Amanda Whittington. Production runs 27th June – 4th July 2015. To book your tickets please visit oasttheatre.com
This play, set in London in the 1950’s, is based on the short life of Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in Britain. She was found guilty of the cold-blooded killing of her unfaithful lover, a womanising racing driver called David with whom she had become obsessed.
The play is not concerned with the trial. It is really about how Ruth’s friends, long before the murder charge, had fought hard to protect her from herself. Ruth always said one thing but did another. This contradiction exasperated her friends but they stayed loyal to the end. There appeared to be no safety for a woman so determined to destroy herself. Why did she plead guilty, but offer no defence? Why did she show no remorse? “It’s obvious when I shot him, I intended to kill him”, she is reported to have told the prosecuting QC. The play portrays what is essentially a lost cause but one on which her friends refused to give up. It is a modern play, first performed in 2013. There is warmth to the exchanges: real people working their way through life. We, the audience, want Ruth’s friends to succeed: we know they won’t, but there is humanity in the struggle.
The play is set in a Mayfair nightclub in the 1950’s. It will look and sound like a black and white film of those times. Therefore, the set and the costumes will be in various shades of black and white. The exception is Ruth, who, seeing herself as a ‘one-off’, dressed as a blonde bombshell at all times. She is a blaze of colour in a drab world; a woman totally absorbed in living a self-generated fantasy. A tightly-written, fast-paced play which engages and involves in equal measure.

SUMMARY
=======
Kent is a county in South East England and one of the home counties. It borders Greater London to the north-west, Surrey to the west and East Sussex to the south-west. The county also shares borders with Essex along the estuary of the River Thames (connected by land via High Speed 1 and the Dartford Crossing), and with the French department of Pas-de-Calais through the Channel Tunnel. The county town is Maidstone.
Canterbury Cathedral in Kent has been the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the Church of England, since the Reformation. Prior to that it was built by Catholics, dating back to the conversion of England to Catholicism by Saint Augustine that began in the 6th century. Before the English Reformation the cathedral was part of a Benedictine monastic community known as Christ Church, Canterbury, as well as being the seat of the Catholic Archbishop of Canterbury. The last Catholic Archbishop of Canterbury was Reginald Pole. Rochester Cathedral is also in Kent, in Medway. It is the second-oldest cathedral in England, with Canterbury Cathedral being the oldest. Between London and the Strait of Dover, which separates it from mainland Europe, Kent has seen both diplomacy and conflict, ranging from the Leeds Castle peace talks of 1978 and 2004 to the Battle of Britain in World War II.
England relied on the county's ports to provide warships through much of its history; the Cinque Ports in the 12th–14th centuries and Chatham Dockyard in the 16th–20th centuries were of particular importance. France can be seen clearly in fine weather from Folkestone and the White Cliffs of Dover. Hills in the form of the North Downs and the Greensand Ridge span the length of the county and in the series of valleys in between and to the south are most of the county's 26 castles.
Because of its relative abundance of fruit-growing and hop gardens, Kent is known as The Garden of England.Kent's economy is greatly diversified; haulage, logistics, and tourism are major industries. In northwest Kent industries include extraction of aggregate building materials, printing and scientific research. Coal mining has also played its part in Kent's industrial heritage. Large parts of Kent are within the London commuter belt and its strong transport connections to the capital and the nearby continent make Kent a high-income county. Twenty-eight per cent of the county forms part of two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty: the North Downs and The High Weald.
