OATMAN ARIZONA ~ OLD MINING GHOST TOWN [HD]
April 6, 2012. I spent an afternoon in Oatman Arizona on historic route 66 (Oatman Hwy) about 28 miles from Kingman AZ. This town was founded a gold mining community in the very early 1900s. Just recently in 2008, the Gold Road Mine in the area was reopened for business, as gold prices are now quite high, making it profitable once again. It seems the town itself is thriving on tourism alone, most of whole Oatman Arizona downtown area is souvenir shops, antique shoppes, restaurants, etc.
If you're through this way, off I-40 at Kingman AZ, you might want to take this trip into Oatman AZ. There's a gunfight (actors) in the street a couple times a day, like 12 noon and 2:15pm, something like that. There's a lot of wild donkeys (borros) that roam about town begging for food.
There's one place I went into there in Oatman Arizona that I felt for sure is haunted (among other obvious haunted historic places nearby), a very strong presence there. I didn't include it among the video clips here.

OATMAN ARIZONA - Wild Burros - Ghost Town on Route 66
Las Vegas is a great starting point to explore the west. An easy Day Trip, Oatman AZ. is where Jackasses are welcome in this Ghost Town that wouldn't die on a historic section of 'The Mother Road', Route 66. When the gold mine shut down the miners let the burros free. Now their descendants come into town each day to hang out with the residents and tourists that stop by to feed them and check out the gift shops and historic buildings. While the burros take over the streets, so do the classic cars that cruise in, adding to the many eras in this step back in time.

OLD GHOST TOWN Oatman, Arizona - road trip to the Black Mountains of Mohave County
Rad trip to an old gold mining ghost town by the name of Oatman, Arizona. Just across the Colorado River and up the hill from Laughlin, Nevada is the historic town of Oatman, Arizona. Often described as a ghost town, it doesn't quite fit the category, but close enough, considering that it once boasted almost 4,000 people and now supports just 122 people.
Gold was first discovered in Oatman in 1902 by a man named Ben Taddock. The mining camp was named Vivian and in 1904 the first post office was established for the growing population. Between 1904 and 1907 the mine yielded over $3,000,000. In 1909 the town changed its name in honor of Olive Oatman, who was kidnapped as a young girl by Apaches after they had massacred her family. The Apaches then sold her to the Mojave Indians, whom she lived with for five years. Olive was rescued in 1857 near the site of the town.

Oatman, Arizona: Hardest-core Biker Town in the West
Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #264
While on my way to the Grand Canyon last May, I stopped off for a bit to explore Oatman, AZ...an historic old mining town that has become an epic Olde-Tyme tourist trap popular with tourists and bikers. Fun fact: Oatman was named after Olive Oatman, a pioneer girl who was kidnapped by Native Americans and ended up living with them for 5 years, during which time they tattooed her face. When she went back to white society, her story was a real sensation -- and they named this town in her honor.
If you like gift shops, souvenir stands, saloons, burger joints, patriotic t-shirts, 2nd amendment t-shirts and flags with a little dash of history sprinkled over it all....you will love Oatman!

Oatman, Arizona - Route 66 - Ghost Town that refuses to die
Oatman is an old mining town on Route 66. Buildings dating to the early 1900s could have been a ghost town, but the residents refused to let it happen.

Route 66: Oatman, AZ to Kingman, AZ
This is a great ride, very scenic with lots of twisties. Actually wish I put my camera on before we got to Oatman, as it had more great Rt-66 stuff from right where the route itself starts just outside Golden Shores. This ride would have been even better without the red Vegas Baby car in front of us going just fast enough to prevent passing. Still, I seriously considered turning around and going back through these twisties again! :D This ride was done on my 2011 Can-Am Spyder RT. A machine I absolutely love, even if most HD riders refuse to wave back.
Oatman, AZ Walk Through Town
A walkthrough main street of Oatman Arizona. Originally an old gold mining town, when the miners were done with their burrows they let him out into the wild. In the daytime they wander into town where tourists can buy wild burro food and feed them. At night they wander out into the surrounding hills. We found it is true they wander into the hills at night as the world's most dangerous and twisting road suddenly had burros standing in the middle of the road around blind corners. Speed limit on the Eastern approach Road was no higher than 30 I believe and got down to 10 miles an hour on some turns. Which still seemed too fast to us.
Back when Route 66 came through this town travelers would often hire locals to help drive their cars through the switchbacks. I can now understand why. Route 66 was eventually realigned away from this town to avoid the dangerous switchbacks to the mountains. Course eventually highway 40 was built that bypassed old 66 all together. This town manages to survive as a tourist catering town with many of the tourist coming from local casinos just over the Nevada state line not far west from here. The Western approach is much more reasonable and less terrifying then the Eastern approach.

Oatman AZ on the Historic Route 66
Cool Springs AZ
This stretch of historic RT66 is by far my favorite, as well as motorcycle enthusiasts . With a road surface that is dangerously narrow, twisty and surprisingly busy its not for the faint of heart. Route 66 travelers should devote an entire day to navigate between Needles, CA and Kingman, AZ. Oatman, AZ is near the halfway point of these two towns. mkdvojnqpfoivnoqerig-019834utpo134ngwrtin9248hg92
