Obelisk Tomb and Triclinium at Petra - Jordan
On the panel in situ : You are standing in the Bab Al-Siq in front of the Obelisk or 'Nefesh' Tomb, which was carved by the Nabataeans in the 1st century AD, slightly earlier than the bottom storey classical style Triclinium (banqueting hall). At the top are four pyramids or 'Nefesh' as well as a niche with a statue in bas-relief, symbolic representations of the five people buried in the tomb.

Petra is an Arabian city in the country of Jordan carved out of the sand-stone mountains in Wadi Araba. It was established over 2000 years ago and was the capital of the Nabataeans. The tombs and structures are now in danger of erosion due to earthquakes, floods and natural weathering and are thus in need of monitoring and documentation.
The laser scanning survey of Petra is part of the Siq Stability project, which is a Funds In Trust project of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for UNESCO. It is managed by the UNESCO Amman Office and has as main partners Italian geological experts from ISPRA (Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research - Geological Survey of Italy), the Zamani Research Group (University of Cape Town), as well as geologists and a surveyor from the Petra National Trust. It is undertaken in cooperation with the Department of Antiquities of Jordan (DOA) and the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA).
The main objectives of the project are the development of a:
Monitoring system aimed at detecting potential unstable rocks and at-risk areas.
Guidelines for implementation of sustainable landslide mitigation strategies and for management of the Petra area.
A GIS platform for storage, analysis and management of data relevant for the Petra Archaeological Park area.
A 3D computer model of the Siq and the major structures and landscape of the site.
A virtual tour of Petra.
The Zamani group is primarily responsible for the 3D modelling of the Siq, i.e. access route to the site based on terrestrial laser scanning and aerial photography, the creation of a comprehensive site GIS and database, a Virtual tour, and 3D documentation of the important tombs and structures.
The Zamani team has completed over 2,000 scans of Petra, produced 450 panoramas and acquired more than 20,000 additional digital images. The resulting point cloud is comprised of some 12 billion surface points. The point cloud includes scans of the rock walls of the Siq, which is the narrow access canyon to the site, the outside and inside of some 30 major structures in the two principal wadis of Petra, including the famous Treasury, Monastery, the Royal Tombs, the Soldier Tomb, the Garden Tomb, the Renaissance Tomb, the Amphitheater, Qasr al Bint and the Great Temple. All structures were fully scanned in very high detail (less than 1cm point interval) inside and outside and in some cases included underground tunnels. Also scanned were the general mountain terrain and much of the landscape surrounding the site.

Petra: Amazing Tour Of Jordan Biggest Tourist Marvel, Breathtaking Attractions Of Petra
Petra: Amazing Tour Of Jordan Biggest Tourist Marvel, Breathtaking Attractions Of Petra
Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Travelers have fascinating places to explore here, including the breathtaking 2,000-year-old Treasury, the narrow Siq gorge (the main entrance to Petra), and the High Place of Sacrifice.
In the video of amazing Petra you will see:
The Monastery (ad-Deir), the largest carved monument in Petra, dates back to the 1st century AD. The interior, like that of the Treasury, is puny in comparison to the facade. The more than 800 steps up to the Monastery can take over an hour.
Princess Alia Clinic, Brooke Hospital for Animals located just inside the entrance to the park.
The entrance to Petra is a long, winding sandstone canyon known as the Siq (about 2km). There are minor carvings spotted here and there throughout the Siq, but the most impressive sights are the colorful and unusual sandstone patterns in the rock walls. There are also remains of terracotta pipes built into the sides of the canyon that were used in Roman times to carry water.
Upon exiting the Siq, visitors can view the jaw-dropping grandeur of the Treasury (al-Khazneh in Arabic). Be sure to note the urn atop the Treasury structure. It has been rumored that the urn contained a Pharaoh's hidden treasure, and the urn bears the bullet pock marks where Bedouin travellers throughout the years have tested the theory. Get there when the park opens at 6AM or 6:30AM (depending on the season) and you may have the Treasury all to yourself or with less than 5-10 people around.
Past the next bend is the outer Siq or Street of Facades, a large canyon lined with the facades of various tombs.
At the end of the Street of Facades is the 7000-seat Roman Theater. The theater was created by the Nabateans but later enlarged by the Romans. It is still used for occasional performances.
On the side of the valley opposite the Roman Theater and a short walk up the hill, are the Royal Tombs. The name was given because they are quite grand in scale compared to the others in the area, but it is unclear for whom the tombs were originally constructed.
and a little history lesson for the end
Petra was the impressive capital of the Nabataean kingdom from around the 6th century BC. The kingdom was absorbed into the Roman Empire in AD 106 and the Romans continued to expand the city. An important center for trade and commerce, Petra continued to flourish until a catastrophic earthquake destroyed buildings and crippled vital water management systems around AD 663. After Saladin's conquest of the Middle East in 1189, Petra was abandoned and the memory of it was lost to the West.
The ruins remained hidden to most of the world until the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, disguised as an Arab scholar, infiltrated the Bedouin-occupied city in 1812. Burckhardt's accounts of his travels inspired other Western explorers and historians to discover the ancient city further. The most famous of these was David Roberts, a Scottish artist who created accurate and detailed illustrations of the city in 1839.
Hope you have enjoyed as much as I have
Have a nice day.

JOIN MY DISCORD!
The Lost City of Petra is an amazing ancient site which we still have much to learn about, covering approxmately 12 killometers, you pass what’s called the Obelisk tomb, then you enter a gorge about 1.2 killometers long called the Seek (Siq), which then presents you with what’s known as The Treasury, then the site leads through a series of many chambers, carvings, tombs and monuments, eventually ending at what’s known as the Monestary, and can’t forget that most of these are carved into the rock rather than constructed piece by piece, there really is no other place like it that we’ve found on Earth.

Petra - The Lost City, JORDAN
Petra (from the Latin word 'petrae', meaning 'rock') lies in a great rift valley east of Wadi 'Araba in Jordan about 80 kilometers south of the Dead Sea. It came into prominence in the late first century BCE (BC) through the success of the spice trade. The city was the principal city of ancient Nabataea and was famous above all for two things: its trade and its hydraulic engineering systems.
Temples, tombs, and other buildings are all carved out of the sandstone cliffs, wich also gives it the name the rose red city
In the last scenes of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade the Treasury serves as a secret temple lost for hundreds of year.
Khazneh, also known as the 'Treasury', is an ancient tomb carved into the cliff face in Petra. Local legend suggests that treasure was hidden in the urn at the top of the cliff.
The dramatic entrance to the 'Lost City of Petra' is a striking, narrow gorge that winds through towering rock.
Deep in the 'Lost City of Petra', this Roman Theater, which seats 3,000, was built by the Nabataean in the 2nd century. The entire seating area was hand-carved out of the mountain.
The spectacular Royal Tombs in Petra are carved into the face of Jebel Khubtha, a sandstone mountain. The Royal Tombs consist of the Urn tomb, the Corinthian tomb, and the three-storied Palace tomb.

Walk to the Treasury in Petra (Jordan) - Virtual walk from the Siq to the Treasury in Petra, inclusiding Petra's One Mile Wonder: From the Siq to the Treasury.
Petra (Arabic: البترا, Al-Batrāʾ; Ancient Greek: Πέτρα), originally known as Raqmu to the Nabataeans, is a historical and archaeological city in the southern Jordanian governorate of Ma'an that is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Another name for Petra is the Rose City due to the color of the stone out of which it is carved.
The Siq
Beginning just near the visitor center, the winding 1.2km ( 3/4-mile) walk through the narrow fissure, or canyonlike Siq, that leads into Petra can take from 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours, depending on your pace. The journey through this mysterious, highly sculptured passageway can be one of the most memorable parts of the Petra experience (especially in the soft twilight as visitors depart from Petra as night falls).
At the entrance to the Siq and at various points throughout the passageway, you’ll notice channels cut into the rock that once held pipes for the water system that carried the spring of Ain Musa into Petra. There is a modern dam to prevent flash flooding during the winter rains; it is modeled after the ruins of an ancient Nabatean dam uncovered by archaeologists at this site. According to Nabatean and local Bedouin legend, Petra’s water source, Ain Musa (“the Spring of Moses”), was created when Moses, leading the Israelites through the desert after the Exodus from Egypt, struck a rock with his staff in despair as his people came close to death from thirst. The rocks burst forth with cool water. (Petra’s Ain Musa is not alone in claiming to be the site of this miracle.) Niches in the walls of the Siq once held the images of gods that protected the city, and intimidated visitors entering Petra.
The Khazneh (Treasury)
Suddenly, a turn in the Siq reveals the most famous structure in Petra, a royal tomb that has come to be known as the Treasury. Bedouins believed that the solid urn sculpted into the monument’s facade was actually hollow and contained treasure; often they fired bullets at the urn in hopes of having the treasure spill out (you can detect their bullet marks across the magnificent facade). The Khazneh’s stone facade changes color during the day: In the morning it can be a soft yellow-rose peach hue; by late afternoon, a pure, soft rose; at sunset, an intense red, before slipping into the dusty twilight.
