Obernai, Alsace - France 4K Travel Channel
Obernai is about 25 km southwest of Strasbourg. It was founded in the 7th century as a Franconian settlement. It was the seat of the Merovingian Athich, the father of St. Odilia, who founded the nearby abbey Mont Sainte Odile. In the 12th century, the town became a part of the Holy Roman Empire and was protected by a double city wall.
We start our city walk at the market square with the beautiful St. Odile fountain and the city hall. Behind it stands a 60 m high tower from the 16th century, the Belfry (Kapellturm). It is a leftover of a Virgin's Chapel. The chapel, built at the end of the 13th century was torn off in 1873. Since the middle ages, the market square has been the site with most of the leading public buildings.
In the east, the square ends with the Corn Exchange. It once served as a public butcher's shop. Behind the town hall is a very narrow alley, the Rue Ruelle des Juifs.
From the town hall, the Rue du Chanoine Gyss leads to the Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul. To the right hand is the old six-bucket well in Renaissance style. The roof is a canopy that rests on three Corinthian columns.
At first, we go from the city hall westwards and inspect the Romanesque House. Built about 1240, it was part of a tithe court.
Then we continue northwards to the Star Place. The name derives from an inn that stood here. In former times the mill canal used to flow across the square.
Along the city wall, we arrive at St. Peter and Paul's church. It is one of the largest Gothic churches in Alsace. Joseph Merklin built the organ inside. On the way back to the market square we pass the Six Buckets Well once again.
From the market square, we go to the Rue du General Gouraud and can take a look into the Fastinger Courtyard. Parts of the building date from the year 1418. Above the well, we see the carved head of an ox, the emblem of the butchers.
We continue our way to the western city gate. Next to it is a synagogue built in 1876. The 205 Jewish citizens of the city had financed it. The first Jewish community in Obernai was mentioned in 1215.

Unseren Rundgang beginnen wir am Marktplatz mit dem schönen Odilienbrunnen und dem Rathaus.Dahinter steht ein 60 m hoher Turm aus dem 16. Jahrhundert, der Kapellturm. Die dazu gehörige Marienkapelle aus dem 13. Jahrhundert ist 1873 abgerissen worden. Seit dem Mittelalter ist der Marktplatz mit den bedeutendsten Bürgerhäusern umgeben.
Im Osten schließt der Platz mit der Kornhalle, der Halle au blé ab. Sie diente einst als öffentliche Fleischerei. Direkt hinter dem Rathaus befindet sich eine extrem schmale Gasse, die Ruelle des Juifs.
Vom Rathaus gehen wir in nördlicher Richtung durch die Rue du Chanoine Gyss zur katholischen Pfarrkirche St. Peter und Paul. Zur rechten Hand befindet sich der Sechs-Eimer-Brunnen im Renaissance Stil. Er ist überdacht mit einem Baldachin, der auf drei korinthischen Säulen ruht.
Wir gehen vom Rathaus zunächst nach Westen und besichtigen das 1240 errichtete romanische Haus. Es war ursprünglich Teil eines Zehnthofes.
Danach gehen wir in nördlicher Richtung weiter zum Sternplatz, der nach dem früheren Wirtshaus zum Stern benannt ist. Der Platz wurde einst vom Mühlenkanal durchquert.
An der Stadtmauer entlang kommen wir zur Kirche Sankt Peter und Paul. Sie ist eine der größten gotischen Kirchen im Elsass. Im Inneren ist sie mir einer Joseph Merklin Orgel ausgestattet. Auf dem Weg zum Marktplatz passieren wir nochmals den Sechs-Eimer-Brunnen.
Vom Marktplatz zweigen wir ab in die Rue du General Gouraud und können einen Blick in den Innenhof des Fastingerhofs werfen. Teile des Gebäudes stammen aus dem Jahr 1418. Über dem Brunnen ist ein geschnitzter Rinderkopf zu sehen, das Wappen der Fleischer.
Wir gehen weiter zum westlichen Stadttor. Hier steht eine Synagoge aus dem Jahr 1876. Die 205 jüdischen Bürger der Stadt hatten sie finanziert. Die erste jüdische Gemeinde in Obernai wurde 1215 erwähnt.

Obernai is a fascinating city in Alsace, France (used to be Germany, and The Rhineland).
The Jewish community are still present here! We were so pleased to find not only signs of them in Alsace, but Jews still here. There is a big synagogue in Obernai. The history of Jews here is fascinating.
Cities which were fortified are very typical of this region. Pennsylvania Dutch people come from here, for the most part.

While visiting the interesting town of Obernai in Alsace, France (formerly Germany and The Rhineland), I entered a courtyard to study a plaque about leaving all your money to your kids. (It is on a clip on CUTECATFAITH here on YouTube.) Turns out this is a hotel! Rooms for 2010 are 55 to 80 euros per single per night, depending on the season. (March is the cheapest month in Alsace, which is why I was there -- besides wanting to investigate my Pennsy Dutch roots.)
The building went up in the 16th century, and in the 17th century, when Louis XIV took over this region, the house was used as a residence for a military governor. Later, some Royal prevosts and such lived here.
This region has gone from being the Rhineland to being French, to being German, to being French . . . it confuses me! Some of the beleaguered inhabitants became the Pennsylvania Dutch in the USA. There is a strong Jewish presence in Obernai with an active synagogue. The tragedy of what befell so many Jews here (and some Anabaptist Christians, such as, perhaps, some of my ancestors) goes way, way back. In Riquewihr, not far from here, the city needed money in the 15th century, so they taxed the Jews in their ghetto, and then killed them after they paid. The funds were used to refortify the town in 1500 (guns had come into use, so a double wall was needed). There's still a tower there in the ghetto called The Tower of Thieves, referring to this atrocity. Some remaining Jews endured a pogrom.
I saw one Jewish wine business there, however, proudly carrying on.
Obernai rates two stars in our travel guide and I loved it, but my spouse found it less interesting than say, Rouffach. Obernai is a great place to visit and the ramparts are still there, with charming houses along them. Worth staying at least one night in this hotel or another, I'd say.

Ouvert depuis déjà deux ans la yechiva comporte une vingtaine d’élèves en internat, nous avons pour but que chacun d’eux ressorte construit avec l’envie de continuer dans la thora et les mitsvot tout en travaillant ou en faisant ces études et que par la suite chacun fonde une belle famille .
Nos espérance en vue de l’année prochaine une trentaine d’élèves, un plus grand effectif, un plus grand bâtiment.
A ce jour une année de yechiva revient à 276.000euros et seulement 83.000euros sont pris en compte par la scolarités et les dons annuels pour l’année prochaine nos frais auront augmentés à 332.000euros.
Nous vous demandons aujourd’hui de nous aider à mener à bien votre projet afin de pouvoir le faire grandir, si nous ne le faisons pas pour l’éducation de nos enfants qui le fera.
Unissons nos forces en faisant un effort et montrons a hachem que nous voulons mettre un terme à l’exile et que ce qui compte pour nous c’est de le servir dans la thora et les mitsvot avec machiah à notre tête et le retour du beit hamikdach dans une ville de Jérusalem reconstruite

Un nourrisson abandonné à Huttenheim
C’est une histoire à peine croyable et pourtant vraie : l’histoire de ce nouveau né de quelques heures seulement abandonné sur un trottoir dans la commune de Huttenheim près de Benfeld. Un nourrisson retrouvé samedi 27 avril peu avant minuit devant un restaurant en plein coeur de ce village de 2700 habitants. Plusieurs personnes ont été interpellées.

Places to see in ( Haguenau - France )
Haguenau is a commune in the Bas-Rhin department of France, of which it is a sub-prefecture. It is second in size in the Bas-Rhin only to Strasbourg, some 30 km to the south. To the north of the town, the Forest of Haguenau (French: Forêt de Haguenau) is the largest undivided forest in France.
Haguenau was founded by German dukes and has swapped back and forth several times between Germany and France over the centuries, with its spelling altering between Hagenau and Haguenau by the turn. It was last German at the end of World War I, then briefly part of the independent Republic of Alsace-Lorraine before being annexed by France in 1919. Haguenau is a rapidly growing town, its population having increased from 22,644 inhabitants in 1968 to 34,891 inhabitants in 2006.
Haguenau dates from the beginning of the 12th century, when the German dukes of Swabia erected a hunting lodge on an island in the Moder River. The medieval King and Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa fortified the settlement and gave it town rights, important for further development, in 1154. On the site of the hunting lodge he founded an imperial palace he regarded as his favourite residence. In this palace were preserved the Crown Jewels of the Holy Roman Empire, i.e. the jewelled imperial crown, sceptre, imperial orb, and sword of Charlemagne.
The town has a well balanced economy. Centuries of troubled history in the buffer lands between France and Germany have given Haguenau a rich historical and cultural heritage which supports a lively tourist trade. There is also a thriving light manufacturing sector centred on the industrial zone to the west of the town. Here the presence nearby of significant retail developments testifies to Haguenau's importance as a regional commercial centre. The recent extension of the ring road has improved access to the commercial and industrial zones and reduced the traffic congestion which used to be a frequent challenge for vehicle drivers using the road which follows the line of the old town walls on the western side of town.
In spite of the extensive destruction Haguenau suffered during the many wars experienced by Alsace, especially the Thirty Years War, the French conquest in 1677 and World War II, she still possesses monuments from nine centuries, even if nothing is left of arguably the most prestigious of them, Frederick I Barbarossa's imperial palace (Kaiserpfalz).
Medieval Haguenau retains three gates from its former fortification, the Tour des Chevaliers (Tower of the knights), the Tour des Pêcheurs (Tower of the fishermen) and the Porte de Wissembourg (Wissembourg gate), two fairly large Gothic churches, Saint-Georges and Saint-Nicolas, an ancient water-mill and the old custom-house (Ancienne Douane). Both Saint-Georges and Saint-Nicolas Church have lost many of their artistic treasures over the centuries, especially their medieval stained glass windows and outside sculptures. Still, both display to this day some fine liturgical furniture (altars, choir stalls, organ cases, church tabernacles, calvaries...). Saint-Nicolas has become the receptacle for the baroque wooden decoration of the church of the destroyed Neubourg Abbey nearby.
French Baroque and classicism has bequeathed the town several buildings, among which the former hospital and the current town hall. The Synagogue (1820) is a fine example of French Neo-classicism, as is the theatre (Théâtre municipal) (1846). The large Hop hall (Halle au houblon) is a good example of historicism in architecture. It was built by the French in 1867 and extended twice by the Germans, in 1881 and 1908.
Haguenau's streets are adorned by attractive fountains, the medieval Saint-Georges fountain, the 18th-century Bee fountain (Fontaine aux abeilles) and the 1825 Dolphin fountain (Fontaine aux dauphins).
Musée historique de Haguenau (Historical Museum). The largest museum in Bas-Rhin outside of Strasbourg, it is located in a grand neo-medieval building (1905).
Musée alsacien (Haguenau) (Alsatian Museum). Located in the former palace of the chancellor (Chancellerie), Haguenau's main Renaissance building.
Musée du bagage (Baggage museum). Located in a former 1840s villa that subsequently served as a bank. The museum opened in April 2016
