Giant Flag: a South African legacy
The South African flag was designed with a vision for building a country that not only works for its people but encourages us to work together for positive change. The Graaff-Reinet community is taking this seriously and are in the process of leaving a legacy for generations of South Africans to come as well as placing themselves on the eco-tourism map. The Giant Flag – made from different coloured succulents, solar panels and road networks - will be seen from space and is the world’s first green innovation project that celebrates clean energy and embodies the true spirit of South Africa and the ability to transform people’s lives in a meaningful way when we all work together.
A giant South African flag to be grown in the Karaoo
A giant South African flag, the size of 66 soccer fields, and comprising two and a half million succulents, will be grown near the Valley of Desolation at Graaff Reinet in Karaoo. The project, at a cost of almost 180-million rand, will create hundreds of jobs to the impoverished Camdeboo area, where 42 percent of residents live on state grants. The succulents will be grown from seeds at the local Obesa Nursery, and will represent the colours of the national flag.

Jansenville community hoping for change in upcoming local elections
The 2016 municipal elections are seen as a lifeline and the only hope for the community of Jansenville in the Eastern Cape, who are hoping that the newly elected Councillor will address issues of service delivery. One of the largest townships in the area has been without water for the past three months and adding to these woes the coffers of the municipality are running dry.

Graaff-Reinet, one of the oldest towns in South Africa, is to become home to one of the world's biggest flags. The giant flag will be made up of millions of coloured desert cactuses and succulents.
They are being planted on previously-barren land in the Camdeboo National Park in the Karoo. The flag will be visible from space and will be the size of 66 soccer fields. The project is intended to stimulate the economy of this region of the Eastern Cape. Jayed-Leigh Paulse filed this report.

Episode 4: Cactus in South Africa
Willie shows us around one of his favorite places to go eat when he is in South Africa. Cactus is a Mexican restaurant that serves tequila and other fine drinks, although they are best known locally for their wood-fired pizzas and signature chilli poppers. They are also a very cheap place to go and dine. You can eat and drink your heart out for less the 25 USD! If you are ever in South Africa, Cactus is definitely the place to check out for all your Mexican needs.

Plains of The Camdeboo - Graaff Reinet - Nieu Bethesda - Aberdeen
Plains of The Camdeboo - Graaff Reinet - Nieu Bethesda - Aberdeen
The word Camdeboo, derived from the Khoi word meaning 'green pool' or 'green hippo pool' from the Khoi Cam-/Kam- 'green' and -debo(o) 'pool, hippo pool', has become synonymous with a sense of magical mystery. It was first popularised in Eve Palmer's book The Plains of Camdeboo, published in 1966 and stretches from the south of the Sneeuberg to as far as Pearston and Murraysburg.
Surrounded by the Camdeboo National Park, Graaff-Reinet, the heart of the Great Karoo -- Place of Thirst -- is a boundless and mysterious area covered by vast livestock and game farms, where broad plains roll away to distant koppies and multilayered mountains that seem to touch the indigo sky. Listen to the silence, breathe in the aged earth and the Karoo bossies (which conjure up the taste of Karoo lamb!), and gaze at a startlingly clear horizon that seems drawn at the other end of the earth. Our clear night skies are studded with countless stars and huge bright planets; even other galaxies are visible with the naked eye, offering some of the best star gazing in the world. Fossils of some of the earliest forms of one-celled life have been discovered here, indicating that life has existed in this region for three billion years. The richness of pre-dinosaur fossils in this region is world-renowned.
We invite you to experience the magic of this area, discover eccentric little hamlets, sprawling farmsteads, the historical town of Graaff-Reinet and the nearby villages of Aberdeen and Nieu Bethesda, populated by warm and welcoming people that love to share their stories and legends.
