Teacher Trainees Held Historic Nationwide Kuy3n Pr3ko Demo Over Compulsory National Service(NSS)
Newly Trained Teachers all over the Country held a historic demonstration today,Wednesday,November 7,2018 to drive home their displeasure about government's decision to post them as National Service Personal into the various public basic Schools across the country starting December 3,2018.
The demonstration, dubbed, Kuy3n Pr3ko Demo took place in majority of the Colleges of Education the Country with its main starting point at the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.
Speaking to the media in Accra, the aggrieved Newly Trained Teachers said they intend to march to the Hearts of Oak Park to petition the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the Minister of Education Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, emphasizing on their decision to resist any move to compel them to do the mandatory national service.
The Newly Trained Teachers said, even though they completed College in July, they were supposed to start teaching in September ,which was the beginning of the 2018/19 Academic Year, but were now being compelled to do the national service although they had done their teaching practice.
They Trainees called on Government to allow the Ghana Education Service to post them ,or come clean on their intentions because they don’t know whether they shall be laid off after NSS.
Inscriptions on Placards
Some of the Inscriptions on the Placards being used for the demonstration include; WE MAKE YOU AND CAN UNMAKE YOU,NPP IS WICKED,NPP HAS BETRAYED US,NAPO MUST LEAVE NOW etc.
*Akatsi and Peki Colleges Join Demo*
Students of the Peki College of Education and the Akatsi College of Education also engaged in the Demonstration in their various Communities to show their displeasure about the compulsory National Service. The students were seen in red arm bands walking through the Principal Streets of the Akatsi and Peki townships
*St. Vincent College Trainees join Demo*
Students at the St. Vincent College of Education in Yendi joined their colleagues in the various colleges of education to demonstrate against teacher trainees undertaking national service.More than 10,000 teachers across the country are expected to join the massive demonstration at their various colleges of education across the country.
Jacob Abani Abanga, President of the Student Representative Council of the school accused government of infringing on their rights.“It looks like government is undermining our rights. In the history of Ghana, no teacher has ever done National Service. We never knew that there was a payback for the allowance they paid us. This is because, we are indirectly paying back the money they gave us with the national service we are going to do.”

A downpour in Accra Sunday afternoon flooded most parts of the city. Areas around Kaneshie, Awudome and the Kwame Nkrumah interchange were flooded. The road in front of the former Obra spot at the Nkrumah interchange was rendered unmotorable. The situation brings to the fore the issue of storm drain construction by road engineers in the country.

Kwadwo Ani
