Exploring Riga, Latvia - May 2019
A detailed exploration of the city of Riga, the capital of Latvia, taken over several days in May 2019.
I've just added a new film to my Tourism: Latvia playlist, here: of a detailed exploration of the city of Riga in Latvia.
Riga is the capital, the largest and primate city of Latvia. With 632,614 inhabitants (2019), it is also the largest city in the three Baltic states, home to one third of Latvia's population and one tenth of the three Baltic states' combined population. The city lies on the Gulf of Riga, at the mouth of the Daugava river. To read more about Riga, click here: .
This film begins at Riga Bus Station, before moving into the Old Town, from here the streets, statues, buildings, architecture, businesses and churches are explored. Outside of the Old Town, the journey heads across parkland towards The Radisson Blu hotel and from the top floor Skyline Bar there are impressive views of Riga. Back into The Old Town St. Peter's Church is explored and then from the tower there are again views over the city of Riga. After this there is a short tour of The Old Town on a beer bike, before further exploration of the streets and squares, and then a walk through the Old Town to the markets and then on to the Latvian Academy of Sciences Observation deck for sunset views over the city. The journey them moves on to the railway station, for views of passing trains. Finally the film ends outside the railway station, watching a firework display.

Riga in 3 days (Latvia)
Riga, Latvia.
Riga was the first destination of our trip and we spent there 72 hours (3 days) in the capital of Latvia.
We were very lucky because the weather was amazing and very sunny.
As far as I'm concerned the best attractions in Riga are the amazing National Library of Latvia with its stunning architecture and St. Peter’s Church with its observatory. From there you can enjoy an amazing view of the city.
Another nice spot to see the city from the top is the Panorama Riga Observation Deck or, if you also want to have a drink, there is the rooftop Skyline bar located at the 26th floor of the Radisson Blu Hotel.
In Riga there are so many interesting things to see and to do:
The Cathedral of Riga, Nativity of Christ Cathedral, the House of the Blackheads, the houses The Three Brothers, Livu Square, Albert Street and the Art Nouveau District, The Musée Art Nouveau, Vermanes Park, The Freedom Monument, The Central Market, Art museum, War museum, Kgb Building, Riga Ghetto, the Latvian Holocaust Museum...
If you enjoy drinking you could try the traditional herbal liqueur: The Black Balsam.

RIGA LATVIA - Sightseeing, friends and fun (Travel Vlog Day 4)
The last day of our Riga travel vlog!
Our day started out with a lovely hotel breakfast and then spa. Afterwards we met up with Potato's friend which she studied in Japan with. We went sightseeing at The blackheads, The Three Brothers, some of the main chruches, the swedish gate and last but not least the monument of freedom. We also ate sushi and then had some lovely drinks at skyline bar. These are some of the best things to do in Riga.
Later we met up with Rice's brother's friend who showed us the park with the love-bridge and a man-made Mountain - the secret kissing spot. We went our for some drinks at unicorn cafe before we ended the day back at Avalon Hotel.
We had a lovely stay in Riga and can't wait to go back!

1. What camera do you use?
I use a Canon Powershot SX700HS and a GoPro Entry level.
2. Where do you get your music from?
Soundcloud and YouTube Audio Library are the two places where I source creative commons licensed music. I include a link to the content creator in the video description, but sometimes I do forget.
3. How much have you spent on your round the world trip so far?
This is continuously changing as I travel, when I finish my trip I will be revealing how much I spent and what areas cost me the most.
4. Will you create videos after your round the world trip?
Yes! Wherever I end up, be it back home in Yorkshire, England or another country, I will be uploading videos of my travels and exploring. Obviously, this might not be as regular as I upload now, but, new content will be uploading weekly.
5. What software do you use to edit your videos?
I use Adobe Premiere Pro, and occasionally, Adobe After Effects. I am still learning, but find it easier to use than other software.
Fantastic Riga Views and Tour of Latvian Academy of Sciences
Built in the 50’s the Latvian Academy of Sciences is a great example of Stalinist-era architecture. Tour the building, spooky dark floors, and witness the beautiful views of Riga from the Observation Deck on the 17th Floor. We see all the great landmarks of Riga and the Daugava River on a crisp Autumn day with sunny blue skies blessing Riga in sunshine.
Riga In Your Pocket - Soviet Riga
Below you can find more information on all individual sights.
Soviet Victory Monument [Uzvaras piemineklis]
The Soviet war memorial which commemorates the supposed communist 'liberation' of Riga is the place to meet die hard reds on Soviet anniversary days. Built in 1985 to lionise the Red Army and to dishearten and annoy the Latvian populace, the monument consists of a tall concrete obelisk adorned with five golden stars symbolising the five years of WWII. On either side are bronze statues of Mother Russia and soldiers advancing with their weapons raised. Dozens of hectares of parkland surround this shrine to former Soviet glory. Take tram N°5 from 11. Novembra krastmala to the second stop over the Akmens Bridge.
Academy of Sciences [Zinātņu Akadēmija]
This Soviet edifice is a cousin to similar statements of ugliness all over Eastern Europe and local nicknames for the Empire State building copy include 'Stalin's birthday cake' or 'the Kremlin'. Most Latvians just consider themselves lucky that the portrait of Uncle Joe that was supposed to be a part of the facade never came to fruition. If you look closely you can spot several hammers and sickles up top. At a height of 65m, the 17th-floor balcony is open to the public for 2Ls, but only from April - September.
Riga Aviation Museum [Rīgas aviācijas muzejs]
If you're a fan of Tom Clancy novels or the Cold War in general, then this little known museum located to the right of the airport terminal is a must see when in Riga. Walk among Soviet helicopters and planes of varying age and size from MiG fighter jets to the enormous Mi-6 passenger helicopter which set world records for speed and hauling capacity. Its rotor has an unbelievable diameter of 36m!
Open 10:00 - 17:00, Sat, Sun by appointment only. Admission: 2Ls for locals, 5Ls for tourists.
Pokrov Cemetery [Pokrova kapi]
Although this old cemetery is seldom visited by anyone apart from the occasional animal enthusiast out to walk his dog, it's a fascinating place to stroll about for an hour or so. Most of the headstones are from the 19th century and tell tales of tsarist bureaucrats who will be dearly missed, but a small section is also dedicated to fallen communist soldiers crowned by a large gold-coloured monument depicting a soldier carrying a Soviet flag. One bizarre stone also immortalises roughly a dozen orphans who were supposedly drained of their blood by the Nazis. The orthodox church and chapel are also worth a quick peek.
Latvian Riflemen Monument [Strēlnieku piemineklis]
In the centre of Old Riga stands a controversial statue in honour of the Latvian Red Riflemen, some of whom became Lenin's personal bodyguards. Some view the monument as a symbol of the old communist system and would love to tear it down. Others believe it is a necessary tribute to Latvians who fought in the early years of WWI. Politics aside, it's quite an impressive statue.
Soviet Symbols can be found on the left bank of the Daugava River.
Spilve Airport is usually not open for tourists.

Visiting Riga to celebrate Līgo (Jāņi)
On 21-24 of June we have visited the capital of Latvia — Rīga, to join the locals in celebrating the local holiday of summer solstice — Līgo. Besides the traditional sightseeing places, we have walked to such unconventional places as Hydro Dam, Salaspils memorial, took a train to a sandy beach and had a calm couple of hours to watch a Formula 1 race at a bar in a city centre.
