A message in a bottle is a form of communication in which a printed, typed, or handwritten message is sealed in a container and released into a conveyance medium . Messages in bottles have been used to send distress messages; in crowdsourced scientific studies of ocean currents; as memorial tributes; to send deceased loved ones' ashes on a final journey; to convey expedition reports, and to carry letters or reports from those believing themselves to be doomed. Invitations to prospective pen pals and letters to actual or imagined love interests have also been sent as messages in bottles. The lore surrounding messages in bottles has often been of a romantic or poetic nature. Use of the term message in a bottle has expanded to include metaphorical uses or uses beyond its traditional meaning as bottled messages released into oceans. The term has been applied to plaques on craft launched into outer space, interstellar radio messages, stationary time capsules, balloon mail, and containers storing medical information for use by emergency medical personnel. With a growing awareness that bottles constitute waste that can harm the environment and marine life, biodegradable drift cards and wooden blocks are alternatives favored by environmentalists.

We take a sunday out and head for Kauri Mountain Beach which is the long Ocean beach at Whangarei Heads, Northland New Zealand. Great surfing here anytime of the year!

Ocean Beach in Whangarei Heads

Oceans beach is on the East coast of New Zealand. It's a popular surfing spot for locals but doesn't get too much tourism since most people pass right through Whangarei. There are also a few nice walks and small mountains to climb up in the nearby area. You need your own vehicle to get here, there is no public transport. It's about 45 minute drive from the city, great spot for camping.

Ocean Beach - Whangarei Heads

We decided to take a drive along the Whangarei Heads out towards Ocean Beach. The scenery on the drive was breathtaking. We passed by rolling hills covered in spring flowers, tiny coves with beach huts and batches, native bush and pine clad hills before reaching Ocean Beach itself. We parked up in some shade as the sun was a little fierce today and walked down to the beach along a sand dune lined pathway.

Today we are doing one of the best hikes in Whangarei, the Mount Manaia Track! The Whangarei Heads walk takes about one hour to climb Mt Manaia with some epic scenery and views in Whangarei. While the Mt Manaia Track is a must-do in Northland NZ, our walk is cut short when we need to rush Robin to the hospital! We have some real New Zealand youtubers drama for you in this episode.
