Places to see in ( Puerto Rico - Spain )
Puerto Rico is a specially constructed holiday resort situated on the south-west coast of Gran Canaria. Puerto Rico proximity to the African continent ensures an ideal climate, particularly in the winter, when the temperatures remain constant at around 20-25°C.
The volcanic origins of Gran Canaria are very apparent in the Puerto Rico coastal ruggedness and contrasting verdant interior. Many of the rocky ravines that lead down to the coastline have been developed with holiday installations; Puerto Rico is one. The apartments and hotels adorn the sides of the otherwise barren cliffs.
Puerto Rico has a sandy beach and two small harbours. Inside the resort, the majority of shops and restaurants are situated in commercial centres. The main commercial centre is at the heart of Puerto Rico, the Europa Shopping Centre is in the higher part, and the Pasarela centre backs the beach.
Puerto Rico is one of Gran Canaria’s most popular family resorts and not surprisingly as it is well known for being one of the sunniest spots on the island. Situated at the mouth of a large valley, this once small fishing port, has today become a busy holiday resort, with its now smart marina and hotels and apartments, built on terraces rising up along the steep slopes along the coastline.
The cosy and beautiful beach sits just in front of the main walkway and is a haven for sun worshippers because of its soft golden sand and pristine calm waters. Renowned to be one of the sunniest spots on the island, Playa de Puerto Rico is the place to perfect your tan! The choice of water sports on offer here is amazing. Maybe you like the thrill of jet-skiing? Perhaps you have always wanted to try windsurfing?
Very close to this lovely beach is the Marina Suites Hotel, situated in a prime position with stunning vistas overlooking the sea. Enjoy 4-star luxury accommodation in a place that comes with a first-class recommendation from Spain-Grancanaria.
Views of the picturesque marina can be enjoyed from this fantastic hotel with its nautically-inspired design. Elegant boats are moored on the turquoise water and there is a well-known sailing centre and club based here. Over the years members have won an impressive five Olympic gold medals and deep-sea fishing thrives, evidenced in the 50+ world records obtained by fishermen setting out from here. Leisure excursions such as pleasure boat trips along the coast, dolphin watching cruises or a trip in a glass-bottomed boat to discover the underwater world, are also popular enticements for visitors.
A short walk from the marina is the water theme park Atlantida with its fun slides and thrilling rides. A major attraction, this is especially popular with families and is located next to the Puerto Rico Shopping Centre, which is home to bars, shops, fast food outlets and a disco.
In addition, if golf is your thing, you will be pleased to know there are many courses in the south of the island. The nearest is a five minute drive away in Mogán. All in all, Puerto Rico is a popular choice among holidaymakers who love the sunshine, golden beach, plush accommodation, stunning scenery and wealth of attractions.

Puerto Rico | Things To Do in GRAN CANARIA
Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria is one of the island’s favourite beach and sun hot-spots. It’s only about 35 minutes south of Gran Canaria airport, passing Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas on the way, and is absolutely **stunning**!
It has a (sand)truck-load of things to do; from beach-lounging, to shallow water snorkelling to full-on diving. There are also plenty of boat trips to enjoy and an abundance of good grub outlets. We’d go there! Wait…we did! Watch!!
Here’s our handy video on the weather in Gran Canaria:
But if you’re still shopping around the Canaries and haven’t quite decided, check out our playlist on Things To Do in Tenerife:

Puerto Rico is a purpose-built tourist resort, with high-rise apartment blocks that cut into the mountain range and overlook the ocean.
Lonely Planet actually compared these apartment blocks to stadium seats, backed up against the mountains, which although a little bit harsh is pretty true. - Yeah, I think so.
It’s in the south of the island, about half an hour’s drive from the airport. Bear in mind everything is about half an hour’s drive from each other because the island is teeny tiny.
There’s plenty to do in the town if you feel like leaving your room. There are restaurants and bars; the restaurants serve plenty of authentic Canarian food, if that’s what you’re after. But if you don’t want to stray too far from home, you can find your international dishes like Italian, Irish, Indian food…
Of course there’s the beautiful Amadores beach, which is probably the main reason that anyone would come to Puerto Rico, because it’s stunning. It’s really ideal for families, or anyone who’s not a particularly strong swimmer, because you have these great harbour walls and sea defences that mean that the waves are tiny and the water’s nice and shallow.
It’s also pristine. Definitely bring your snorkels and your goggles because the water is so clear you can see all of the fish swimming around you.
I can tell you that there are actually two harbours so you’ll see plenty of yachts and boats sailing off into the distance. Get yourself on one of them. - We went on an excursion to see dolphins and whales with a company called Spirit of the Sea.
We’re in Puerto Rico on a boat that’s called the Spirit of the Sea in Gran Canaria and we’re off whale-watching. - Yay! We’ll be really lucky if we see whales, we’re hoping to at least see some dolphins, maybe some turtles. - Yay! Can’t wait! - I know!
Now, although the whales were a bit of a no-show, I think you’d have to be probably very very lucky to ever see a whale on one of these, bit of a tourist trap possibly? We saw the dolphins and they were incredible! - We are seeing a whole army of beautiful dolphins, swimming in pairs! - They just do all these acrobatics, flips and jumps. - They’re right under the boat too, they come up right here, right at the front. - And it’s really clear so you can see them quite far down in the water.
Two to three hundred striped dolphins jumping and leaping and just generally looking absolutely beautiful. - It was magical. We felt super privileged and also emotional about it, it was really cool.
So that cost us €27 each and took two hours. - So that was cool! We saw a pod of dolphins. No whales unfortunately, or turtles. - No, but still it was absolutely amazing. They were beautiful, so many of them. - Yep, the guys really looked after us as well, definitely definitely recommend it. - Absolutely.
There are also lots of diving spots in the area. Divey Jones, Davy Jones’ diving company is a great local company! - Divey Jones? They should have called it Divey Jones. - They should have. - Anyway, I dived with Davy Jones and I highly recommend them because they’re very knowledgeable and you feel really really well looked after.
In summary, Puerto Rico had everything on its doorstep. Stunning natural beauty, pristine beaches, lots of activities and facilities. And, it’s really cheap.
So thanks for watching and don’t forget to check out our dolphin-spotting video. Bye!!
Donald Trump on Puerto Rico This is an island. Surrounded by water Big water
He later informed Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy that Puerto Rico is out in the ocean. You can't just drive your trucks there”.
This is an island sitting in the middle of an ocean – and it's a big ocean, a really, really big ocean, Mr Trump told reporters earlier this week.
Mr Trump, meanwhile, has defended his administration's response, blaming the media for biassed coverage and repeatedly mentioning the territory's island location.
He later informed Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy that Puerto Rico is out in the ocean. You can't just drive your trucks there”.

San Juan, Puerto Rico
Recorded February 15-16, 2008.
San Juan is the capital and largest municipality in Puerto Rico. As of the 2000 census, it has a population of 433,733, making it the 42nd-largest city under the jurisdiction of the United States. San Juan was founded by Spanish colonists in 1521, who called it Ciudad de Puerto Rico (Rich Port City). Puerto Rico's capital is the second oldest European-established city in the Americas.
The video begins outside the Condado Plaza Hotel as I look out on the Atlantic Ocean. After a couple ocean views I walk into Old San Juan where I visit Plaza del Quinto Centenario, Castillo San Filipe del Morro, and Fort San Cristobal.

It’s got awe-inspiring historical landmarks, a colonial district overflowing with Spanish architecture, and a bar scene that lasts into the wee hours of the night. But San Juan, Puerto Rico, also has a surplus of beaches right within its territory. And these eye-catching stretches are so clean and well-maintained they put other city beaches to shame.
1. Escambrón Beach
Forget about booking an expensive snorkeling trip. At Escambrón Beach, all you need is a swimsuit and a snorkel mask to glimpse a variety of tropical fish at the coral reefs right offshore.
The beachfront at Escambrón is not huge, but there’s plenty of space for gatherings under the palm trees, and this Blue Flag beach boasts high water quality, lifeguards, bathrooms and parking (for a small fee).
2. La Playita del Condado
This tiny but pristine gem is just a sliver of sand near the Condado Plaza Hilton and the Condado Lagoon. But in the early afternoons, the sun’s rays make the tranquil water completely transparent, and a snorkel mask will help you see the tiny seashells comprising the ocean floor, plus the occasional curious fish swimming near your ankles. There is no parking and no bathrooms, so plan accordingly.
3. Isla Verde Beach
Though it’s technically located in the town of Carolina, Isla Verde is still lumped in with the best beaches in San Juan. Its breathtaking blue waters and wide, crescent-shaped beachfront make it a favorite of tourists staying at one of the many stylish high-rise hotels in the area.
4. Carolina Beach
Just east of Isla Verde is Carolina Beach, a peaceful, natural beach escape that offers parking, bathrooms and lifeguards. The waves are a bit stronger out this way, but the warm water is wonderful for a dip nonetheless.
The most intriguing aspect of this beach? It’s home to the Coastal Forest Nature Reserve, a campsite of protestors occupying a small wooded area, where wildlife live alongside rebellious citizens dedicated to keeping the coastal area out of the hands of developers.
5. Condado Beach
Condado Beach is often regarded as one of the best beaches in San Juan, mostly for its proximity to Old San Juan, Santurce and the Condado neighborhood itself, which nearly guarantees that tourists will make a stop through here. It’s a golden-sand stretch backed by popular hotels and casinos, with lively Ashford Avenue just a stone’s throw away.
Parque La Ventana al Mar, a palm-lined green space with an impressive water fountain, adds to the upscale vibe. A walk along the small oceanfront promenade here is a must, but beware of crashing waves while you take selfies.
6. Ocean Park Beach
It’s surprising that more visitors don’t make the time for Ocean Park Beach, a nightly meeting point for expats, locals, water sports enthusiasts and dog lovers. The surrounding neighborhood of Ocean Park, home to Loiza Street’s many hipster eateries and nightclubs, is a mix of grit and trendiness, bringing neighborhoods like Brooklyn or Chicago’s Logan Square to mind.
7. Playa Peña
It’s the only beach in Old San Juan, but it’s so easy to miss that most tourists never include it in their itineraries. Take a break from the old colonial town’s cobblestone streets and shady plazas and walk toward the Capitolio, just east of the San Cristóbal fort.
A small plaza gives access to a stairway down to this rugged coastal haven, perfect for a few minutes of tranquility and salty breezes. Most days, the waves are too strong for swimming, and there are no lifeguards or bathrooms, so come prepared and be vigilant.
8. Playa de Piñones
Playa de Piñones offers not only a fantastic beach for swimming, but many chances to taste local fare too. Photo: Theresa Boehl
In all fairness, Playa de Piñones is located well outside the city boundaries near the neighboring town of Loiza, but it’s so legendary among beach-lovers and locals that to leave it off a list of the best beaches in San Juan would be a mistake.
Why is it so beloved? For one, its cove beach offers calm, clear waters to cool swimmers on even the hottest days. Plus, there are the many ramshackle eateries where you can sample local fried specialties like alcapurrias (yautia fritters), piononos (stuffed plantains) or pastelitos (Puerto Rican-style empanadas), washed down with an ice-cold coconut water or a can of Medalla.
