Dive and Snorkel the Famous Curaçao Tugboat | Fun for the Whole Family | Ocean Encounters Curacao
Located in just 5 meters (15ft) of water, this famous Curacao tugboat was wrecked just a few yards offshore in a protected bay of Caracasbaai. This site is perfect for divers as well as snorkelers.
Easy to access and easy to find a plethora of critters such as seahorses, octopus, lobsters, napping scorpion fish and the odd nudibranch if you can find it! The tugboat is overgrown with tube sponges and coral and is home to a variety of colorful reef fish too. The resident Majestic blue Parrot Fish and Yellow Tail Snappers guard this site.

Curacao Ocean Encounters Dolphin Dive 9 June 2013
This summer we vacationed on Curacao, the largest of the five islands of the Netherlands Antilles. We signed up for the Ocean Encounters dolphin dive but they have several options for your enjoyment. It was our first diving experience so we had to take a dive theory class first. Maritjke was the dive master who trained us and she was Awesome. The dive took place at the Dolphin Academy and it was fabulous. This video shows part of our training in the pool and our own footage of the actual dive. You can bring your own camera as we did. If you don't have a waterproof camera, The Dolphin Academy has a videographer that will make a video for you but it will cost $70.00.

Help hunt Lionfish Curacao | Lionfish Scuba Diving Experience Curaçao
Curaçao Working to Make LIONFISH Invasion a Sustainable Industry | Lionfish Curacao
An invasive species can be a plant, fungus, land animal or marine animal that is not native to a specific location. Invasive species have the ability to spread in huge numbers and are believed to cause huge amounts of damage to the environment, economy and even the health of humans and other animals.
The Lionfish, (Pterois volitans and P. miles) is an invasive species that is found in the surrounding waters of Curacao since 2009, which is almost 25 years after they were introduced off the coast of South Florida in 1985. Lionfish were originally from the Indo-Pacific area but now they are well established in The Caribbean Sea, North Western Atlantic, South Western Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. Due to the speed at which this species is growing and the way they negatively impact native fish communities, they are now considered as one of the biggest threats to the native reef systems surrounding the beautiful Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao.
Lionfish have large venomous spines, which makes them a bad choice for possible predators as well as humans. The venom can cause severe pain, vomiting, headaches and difficulties breathing to anyone who gets stung. The only way to alleviate this pain is by submerging the affected area into water that is as hot as you can tolerate, without burning the skin and leaving it for 60 to 90 minutes. Therefore, special training and safety precautions need to be used when hunting Lionfish.
Damage Caused By Lionfish
Even though this invasive species is absolutely fascinating to observe and seem to glide gracefully through the water, Lionfish are causing untold damage to the reefs surrounding Curacao. They have adapted effortlessly to this environment and due to their brightly coloured bodies, they attract junvenile fish, which serves as their perfect meal. The sheer number of Lionfish consuming other species of fish is so high that this is affecting the whole underwater ecosystem. These fish would otherwise be grazing off the reef, keeping it healthy and continuously growing.
Lionfish have become known as a ‘Super Predator’ consuming four times their average body weight every day. They are not selective and certainly eat anything that gets in its way, including Mahi Mahi, Grouper, Snapper and Wahoo. With no known predators, the lionfish is dominating Curacao’s pristine and spotless fringing reefs. In fact, Substation Curacao in collaboration with the California Academy of Sciences recorded them existing as deep as 800ft, just off the shoreline of the Curacao Sea Aquarium Park.
Research has shown that female Lionfish have the ability to lay up to 2 million eggs per yearand without any natural predators, there is no stopping this invasive species from spreading. Additionally, these egg sacs have a chemical within them, which prevents other species from eating them.
Although spear fishing in the waters around Curacao is forbidden, the PPC (Public Prosecution of Curacao) do recognise the devastating effects that lionfish have on the marine environment and also realise the urgency to fight against this invasive species. In 2012, the PPC announced that they would NOT prosecute against organized groups of hunters within territorial waters, if the approved rules are followed.
Even to this day, the war against lionfish rages on and continues to challenge hunters who give up their free time to help prevent more damage to the reefs and in turn, the local economy. At Ocean Encounters Diving Curaçao, we provide you with lessons on how to safely search for and catch lionfish without disturbing or harming the surrounding reef. We also teach you how to carefully remove the spines and prepare it, making it the perfect meal for any fish lover.

BEST Dive Resorts Curacao | Avila Beach Hotel | Dive Curaçao
The Avila Beach Hotel is the oldest operating hotel in Curacao, with the first guests arriving in 1949. Prior to its re-imagining as a hotel, the property was used as a clinic, a boys boarding school and even a Governor’s home ...The rooms showcase Dutch colonial architecture and have balconies boasting phenomenal ocean views. For special occasions book the stunning Nic Møller 3-bedroom suite which has a French balcony, an open concept living area and a fully functioning kitchen and scullery with washing machine and breakfast bar. by Forbes Magazine (October 2019)
The Avila Beach Hotel is a centrally located luxury beachfront resort in Willemstad on Curacao with an authentic soul. It is the oldest operational hotel in Curacao and has received many awards. The Avila Beach Hotel is known for its personal touch, the people who have made it grand since 1949, the staff, the guests and the friends of the hotel.
The hotel has 2 private beaches separated by an elevated boardwalk leading up to Blues Bar & Restaurant. With an infinity pool, a spa, 2 restaurants (The Pen and Blues Bar & Restaurant) and several bars on site, this hotel creates a great atmosphere for its guests. Additionally, Historic Willemstad is only a short drive away and the hotel offers a mini-bus service to and from downtown twice a day.
Scuba Diving / Snorkeling and Day Trips
Avila Beach hotel is the sister resort of the LionsDive & Beach Resort and Ocean Encounters, a Curacao Tourist Board approved dive operator and preferred hotel partner offers a pick up service for guests diving or snorkeling. The Avila Beach Resort is just a 5-minute drive from our main location.
Ocean Encounters ( is not only a PADI Green Star Award recipient but they also joined the Project AWARE's Adopt a Dive Site program” and they assist the Coral Restoration Foundation Curacao in maintaining a coral nursery located on the Avila Beach Hotel's house reef.
The Avila Beach Hotel contributes to sustainability: Sustainability is something we gladly see more and more often in the travel industry. Also hotels and travel agencies on Curacao are increasingly focusing on this important topic. This also applies to the Avila Beach Hotel which is one of the few hotels on the island which has a close relationship with the local population. Especially due to the fact that they are the oldest operational hotel on the island and therefore the setting of many warm memories of not only (loyal) hotel guests, but also from locals. Without the support and love of the local community, Avila would have been a different Avila. And the hotel gladly repays the favor. (

Tugboat Beach Dive Review | Snorkeling in Curacao
Snorkeling in Curacao is spectacular and Tugboat Beach is one of our favorites when visiting the island. Curacao itself has some of the healthiest coral reefs in the Caribbean and most locations are accessible right from the beach, which is a big plus.
Hopefully, this video gives you some insight into what to expect when visiting this location and insight into Curacao snorkeling and freediving.
#curacaosnorkeling #curacao #caribbean
Tugboat Beach is on the southwest side of the island and is close to Jan Theil. There is plenty of parking and a cool little spot to eat and grab a drink by the ocean. It is in an industrial area but the quality of the snorkeling still makes it one of the best Curacao beaches.
Directors Bay is another amazing location that's a short swim to get to. Below are Google map links to both locations and a website with more information regarding Curaçao snorkeling.
