Just 150km east of Nicaragua and some 800km northwest of mainland Colombia, the seahorse-shaped island of San Andrés is best known as Colombia's favorite weekend getaway, where mainlanders love to come to drink, tax-free shop, sunbathe and party. San Andrés Town, the focus of the action, won't be splashed across postcards any time soon, though it does boast an attractive beach promenade and has in recent years begun to address what might be charitably termed its beauty gap.
Indeed, San Andrés is best appreciated outside the downtown area known as El Centro. Whether you take a boat trip to one of the idyllic offshore cays, check out the excellent scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities or head down the scenic 30km road encircling the rest of the island, this quirky place where Anglo-Caribbean Raizal culture grinds up against the far more recently imported Colombian one, often manages to charm visitors in the end.

San Andrés and the nearby islands of Providencia and Santa Catalina form the department of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina. San Andrés, in the southern group of islands, is the largest of the department. The official languages of the department are Spanish, English, and San Andrés–Providencia Creole. This archipelago encompasses a total area of 57km² including the outer cays, reefs, atolls and sand banks, with the area of the islands being 45km². In 2000 it was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, named “Seaflower Biosphere Reserve”, which not only includes the islands but also about 10% of the Caribbean Sea, amounting to a vast marine area of 300,000km². The purpose of this declaration is to ensure that the ecosystem, which is rich in biodiversity, is well preserved and conserved
Isla de San Andrés is a small Caribbean island that one can drive around in an hour, including a stop or two for taking photos and admiring the scenery. That's the whole island in one hour! We found out during our stay that the most convenient way, and cheapest, was organising a private tour of San Andrés including all the sights we wanted to see. The private tour was arranged at our Posada, as was the diving, through the owner at Posada Nativa Miss Trinie. This video does not include touristic locations as the Acuario, the alleged cave where Sir Henry Morgan hid his treasures, the Piscinita etc.

During the recent Hope Spot expedition to the Gulf of California, Dr. Sylvia Earle and the Mission Blue team were deeply honored to accompany three disabled divers into the vibrant waters of Cabo Pulmo Marine Reserve. The experience was made possible thanks to Eduardo Martinez, director of Fundacion Teleton BCS, and David Castro, a special friend of Mission Blue and a disabled diver instructor who runs Cabo Pulmo Divers. The disabled divers -- Fausto, Roberto and Salma -- were a delight to dive with and received Dr. Sylvia Earle's words of deep admiration for their courage. It is also mentioned that Columbus discovered these islands during his fourth exploration voyage.

Islas del Rosario is a stunning national park about 50 kilometers away from Cartagena, which is especially famous for its 28 islands, white beaches and coral reefs. The islands can only be reached by boat. Typical tours to the islands start from Cartagena where you take first about 1 1/2 hours a boat to Playa Blanca, Baru. This is a long white beach with lots of basic bars, restaurants and nice places to relax. It is worth to sleep a night there to experience the beach without the daily invasion of tourists, which leaves about 2 pm. Around noon are leaving once a day boats to the Islas del Rosario from Playa Blanca. The largest island is called Isla Grande. Other islands like Isla San Martín, which offers an open-sea oceanarium, Isla Pavitos or Isla Majayura are way smaller and surrounded by protected coral reefs. Most of the 28 islands are private property. Enjoy the best places of Islas del Rosario & Playa Blanca from a drone perspective.
