Round trip flight from Prince Rupert to Haida Gwaii in bad weather.
Round trip flight in less than ideal conditions. We left Prince Rupert in good weather but hit a snow storm on the way to Haida Gwaii. But the weather cleared pretty nicely. On the way back from Masset to Prince Rupert, we hit multiple snow storms where visibility went from bad to almost none. We flew around the worst but had to land in the ocean 30 km out of town, then land again 5 km away from the Sea Plane base. We taxied that last 5 km portion since snow was still coming down hard.

Prince Rupert Day Trip - Baxter Swam in the Ocean!
Went for a day trip down the road to Prince Rupert on the coast. Got to visit some friends and take Baxter on the Butze Rapids trail. He jumped in a big mud pit but thankfully we could pop out to an inlet where he jumped in the ocean to wash off.

Seeing Canada series
This film shows the fishing and packing of halibut in British Columbia. An animated map shows the fishing grounds along the coast of British Columbia and Alaska. In southern waters, halibut fishing is done by small vessels that cast lines about four miles long. Fishermen are shown preparing and casting these lines and then hauling in the catch. Once caught, the fish are cleaned and packed in ice in the ship's hold. In northern waters, the fishing is done by small, independently operated boats. The fishermen on these boats haul in their catch by hand and are then picked up by a mother ship. The large plants at Prince Rupert process and pack the halibut, for distribution to the rest of the continent. Workers are shown lifting the halibut out of a ship's hold, packing the fish into crates with ice and then loading it into a railroad refrigerator car. The Fish Express carries the daily supply of halibut to consumers in Eastern Canada and the United States.
This film is from the Seeing Canada series, which was produced by Bernard E. Norrish beginning in February 1919. The Seeing Canada series was the first major series of films about Canada. The films were successful in showcasing Canada to an international audience and were critically acclaimed for their technical quality.

Butze Rapids Trail, Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada [HD] 1080p
A very nice and easy hike. It was worth it since the sky was blue and the air was crispy cold, but not too much. The ocean and forest smell was overwhelming and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. Got some nice pictures to show up for.
tomorrow today | Manganese nodules
The seabeds of the worlds oceans are rich in raw materials such as diamonds, rare minerals and manganese nodules. They look like small potatoes but they contain metals such as nickel, cobalt and copper, and small amounts of rare metals like molybdenum, selenium and tellurium, which are used in the construction of electronics components. The hunt to recover the precious metals from the seabed has begun. German geologists recently carried out an extended research project in the Pacific. They wanted to find out how many manganese nodules there are, and where they are scattered. 24 million tons of precious metals are believed to be lying under the worlds oceans. The German geologists are trying to learn whether the nodules could be recovered from the seabed without damaging the environment, and which technology would be best suited to do that. We take a look at their findings.
The secrets of Canada's tap water, explained
Would it surprise you to know drinking water in some Canadian cities contains unsafe levels of lead?
A year-long investigation by more than 120 journalists from nine universities and 10 media organizations found some disturbing answers.
Hundreds of thousands of Canadians could be consuming tap water laced with high levels of lead leaching from aging infrastructure and plumbing, a large collection of newly-released data and documents reveals.

Blissful Drone Footage of Blue Whales in San Diego
After a Summer in 2017 where I spent nearly every single day on the water to only observe a mere 27 Blue Whales, 2018 has been an absolute revelation for me here in San Diego. Over the course of three days, I had nearly 100 incredible Blue Whale sightings! To make things even more special, I personally have confirmed at least 5 different Cow/Calf pairs! A truly staggering number for someone that began his professional whale watching career in Southern California during the Warm Blob event. If you're not sure what that is, just google warm blob.
Every single day was a once-in-a-lifetime moment. I lost track of how many times I used the phrase. The animals, especially the calves, showed extraordinary interest in the boat, and often times came literally right up next to me. Considering what has just happened in Iceland, perhaps this video can remind people of the beauty of these animals, and why we must protect them!
All of this footage was taken off the San Diego coast, over a 3 day period in July.

CANADIAN PACIFIC S.S. PRINCESS PATRICIA CRUISE SHIP TO ALASKA PROMOTIONAL FILM 45084
“The ‘Princess’ Way to Alaska” is a 1960s color film presented by Canadian Pacific, the “world’s most complete transportation system,” and encourages travelers to rely on the company’s Princess Patricia cruise ship when planning a visit to Alaska or the Yukon. The luxury liner is introduced at mark 00:30, with the narrator explaining the vessel has been designed specifically for voyages to Alaska. The itinerary takes the passenger from Vancouver, British Columbia, northward to Prince Rupert, and on to Alaska with stops at Ketchikan, Wrangell, Juneau, and Skagway, before traveling to Carcross in the Yukon Territory. The film offers some of the highlights in each stop, including the new post office in Vancouver and the city’s calm waters of the Pacific Ocean, log-rolling events, and traditional bagpipers. The ship is shown again at mark 02:35, as the film takes the viewers onboard with scenes of the vessel’s luxury, followed by images of various activities held on the ship and majestic sights passed along the way. Following a sight-seeing tour at Prince Rupert, shown at mark 07:00, the cruise ship takes its passengers to Ketchikan, Alaska, shown at mark 12:23, with images of many of the totem poles that stand on the land. (Including one, at mark 14:13, honoring Abraham Lincoln.) Passing small ice flows at mark 14:55, the cruise ship approaches Juneau at mark 15:10, with its many hotels and banking facilities, as well as the Mendenhall Glacier, introduced at mark 16:30. Following more scenic views of Skagway (“Mecca of the gold rush days”), the travelogue takes its viewer to the White Pass and Yukon Railway for a trip to Carcross in the Yukon Territory, as more scenic views flash across the screen. After a show by cancan dancers near mark 26:25, the ship makes its southbound voyage back to Vancouver and the film reaches an end.
The Princess Patricia was the first ship to operate for Princess Cruises, one of the largest lines in the world when she was built 1949. Stanley MacDonald chartered a Canadian Pacific ferry in 1965. He intended to monopolize the winter cruising market by operating out of Los Angeles and cruising to Acapulco, Mexico. This is the period where most ships would be laid up.
The second of Canadian Pacific Line's two 356 foot long, 56 foot wide, 5,611/6,062 ton (1963 refit) Fairfield Shipyards, Scotland-built west Pacific coast steam turbine passenger ships, the SS Princess Patricia was named in 1949 for Princess Patricia of Connaught. She was retired from Alaskan cruising services in 1978, used as a floating hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia for their 1986 World's Fair before being finally scraped in Taiwan in 1995.
