Wild Grenada - Leatherback Turtle nesting at Levera Beach by ScubaTech
Look what we found when we went strolling at Levera Beach...
Usually leatherbacks nest during nighthours and it is very rare to see them at daytime.
We immediately informed Nic from Ocean Spirits who tagged the turtle(oceanspirits.org). These guys do a fantastic job by doing research and being on watch every night to make sure the turtles can nest without disturbance.
If you want to discover the wild side of Grenada get in touch with us and we will show you the hottest spots above and below the surface.

Leave Grenada Sea Turtles Alone! | #krissmgvlogs
Come with me on a day trip to the town of Grenville, River Antoine Rum Distillery, Bathway Beach and Levera Beach whilst taking in Grenada's rugged landscape and luscious rain-forest!
Worryingly, we also came across baby leather-back sea turtles placed in a box. They are endangered creatures and under Grenadian law it is illegal to disturb, handle or remove hatchlings from the beach!
If you discover hatchlings, and they are in distress, call the Sea Turtle hotline, run by Ocean Spirits on 1 473 534 4324 |

We left Grenada
Left Grenada and looked as if we had a weather window for the crossing. Whew, it was rough out there but Defiant plowed through those 7+ foot waves . Our buddy boats tacked for more comfort and made it in behind us by 20-30 minutes. We are glad to of finally made it away from Grenada to see new places.
Excited to let the new journey begin.

MaximsNewsNetwork: GRENADA HURRICANE RECOVERY & SEA LEVELS (UNTV)
MaximsNewsNetwork: 22 May 2010 - UNTV: Grenada - Grenada was hit by Hurricane Ivan six years ago and has been struggling to recover. Damages totaled more than (USD) 800 million US dollars, crippling Grenada's economy and now the Carribbean island faces a new threat, rising sea levels.
Perhaps Grenadas greatest threat now apart from another deadly hurricane, like Ivan is rising sea levels and sea water intrusion.
In some parts, residents say land loss accounts for some 60 feet. And higher storm surges more than five feet high add to further land loss as sea water slowly nibbles away at the islands rim.
Hurricane Ivan pummelled the island for six hours straight. Thirty-nine people died. Ninety percent of homes were destroyed. Virtually every major building in St. Georges, the capital, suffered structural damage.
Grenada is the worlds second largest exporter of nutmeg. Ivan destroyed 4.5 million dollars worth of stock waiting for shipment a quarter of that years nutmeg revenue.
SOUNDBITE (English) John Branch, Nutmeg farmer, Grenada:
During Ivan, the winds came down and totally smashed up and eradicated the house. I had to leave and run across to my garage which we now converted to the home.
SOUNDBITE (English) Philbert Andrews:
The roof lifted and went so. It fell right in the garden and then before we came out, we see the galvanized or the kitchen started to rock.
SOUNDBITE (English) John Branch, Nutmeg farmer, Grenada:
Ninety-five percent of our nutmegs were destroyed, plus roads and access to the remaining fields. You could see us abandon some fields and depend mainly on the tourists, the cruise ship trade as a source of income to pay the workers.
For a real, economic, full production it will take about 10 years for a nutmeg tree to come into full bloom.
SOUNDBITE (English) Philbert Andrews, native of Grenada:
They came and gave us a new house. I said thanks very much. We see where we are going but we dont know whats coming.
SOUNDBITE (English) Steve Nimrod, scientist:
One of the main predictions of climate change is actually global warming a predicted increase in frequency and intensity of hurricanes. Hurricanes basically start on the oceans and its the heat in the oceans that really fuel the hurricanes.
SOUNDBITE (English) Crofton Isaac, Marine Biologist, Grenada:
If there is global climate change, then global positioning in regards to where the hurricane belt is and where it is not has to be reconsidered.
SOUNDBITE (English) Crofton Isaac, Marine Biologist, Grenada:
If you dont change, and you rely on the old maps and the old paradigms, then you are in for a serious shock.
SOUNDBITE (English) Steve Nimrod, scientist:
It poses a risk factor for when we have surging waves and storms and all of that sort of stuff.
SOUNDBITE (English) John Branch, Nutmeg farmer, Grenada:
The house was in wood; we changed up most of everything to concrete. So basically, we are hurricane proof to a certain point but no one can tell.
