Hola from SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO!! ????????
We started off our time on the island visiting and learning with locals about their homelands as we headed toward Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery. A cemetery isn’t usually a must-see attraction when visiting somewhere, with the exception of San Juan. Built in front of the Atlantic Ocean stands the burial grounds of important Puerto Rican’s and individuals. We took the time to really soak in the beautiful scene of the historic oceanfront from the grounds above. The view to the west is the fort of Castillo San Felipe del Morro (El Morro), and to the east is La Perla. We set off again to explore and learn more of San Juan! We pass by many beautifully sculpted historical buildings. The Old San Juan Casino was one of the many. When you picture a casino you think of gambling activities, loud noises, and flashy lights. Yet this casino is rather opposite of what you have in mind. It was used more as a large gathering place for high society. It is a beautiful and elegant venue for events and celebrations. The next building was once the YMCA building and nowadays it’s known as Casa Olímpica. Keep in mind that Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory controlled by the US. The next building was Biblioteca Carnegie. This pink building was one of the institutional structures built by the United States government as part of its education program on the island. The next building is Casa de España. The building consist on a beautiful ballroom on the second floor and the first floor was once a spanish restaurant. We then take a moment to reflect upon a time in history that we should never forget. “In the Shadow of Their Absence” is a Holocaust Memorial dedicated to the Puerto Rican’s that lost their life during a terrorist attack. Colon Plaza (Columbus Plaza) is located at the entrance to Old San Juan greeted by the Christopher Columbus statue and surrounded by craft tents set up by locals selling handcrafted gifts. The plaza is also surrounded by restaurants and cafes. Food? That was a must on our list. A local pointed us to the nearby Old San Juan Food Court. We were greeted by friendly faces and the smell of delicious freshly cooked food. El Sazón de Abuela or Grandma’s Kitchen is rated 5 stars for a reason! After refueling we hit the streets again. This time we strolled downtown not only running into more friendly locals but friendly pigeons as well, haha! Continuing on to the heart of Old San Juan where Calle Fortaleza is located. This beautiful street is located in the heart of old San Juan. The street has beautiful colorful buildings towering on each side. This is where the governor of Puerto Rico and his family live. Many businesses have not re-opened following Maria & some are open with no electricity. Our hearts go out to the hurricane victims and the families that are working hard to rebuild their community day by day. Another place we recommend to visit?- without a doubt! Go and immerse yourself in the mixture of the Spanish & Caribbean culture and we assure you will not be disappointed!
Side note!: A must when visiting Puerto Rico is a kayak adventure through the bioluminescent bay- Puerto Mosquito (Mosquito Bay). These waters consist of organisms named Pyrodinium bahamense, Dinoflagellates (dinos). When they come in contact with another organism or shaken they produce a burst of blue light. It’s truly a natural phenomenon you have to experience! Sadly the bioluminescence burst were unable to capture on camera as our tour guide said it would be pointless to try to capture on GoPro.

We went to the small town of Pendleton, Oregon, where medical marijuana is legal, to visit Mykayla Comstock, an eight-year-old leukemia patient who takes massive amounts of weed to treat her illness. Her family, and many people we met along the way, believe not only in the palliative aspects of the drug, but also in marijuana's curative effect—that pot can literally shrink tumors.
