Senegal villagers replanting their devastated mangrove forests
(17 Oct 2010)
STORYLINE:
Creeping into the water with their tangled roots, mangrove trees provide a lifeline for animal and human alike.
But use of the mangroves for firewood and housing has led to a decrease in the number.
Now, groups of villagers such as this one are are helping plant more trees.
With a handful of mangrove seedlings in their hand, the villagers stick them one by one into the mud
It looks like hard work, but the villagers know that it will benefit their natural environment.
Last month, I found people that were planting in the mangrove, so I started to help them and since then I have planted the mangrove trees. It is for my own well-being but also for the well-being of the whole of Casamance. says Amidou Djame.
Others, such as seven-year-old Inou Sa, hope the trees will bring back the fish.
I am planting trees because if I do that, the fish will come back here and I will be able again to fish here.
Mangroves are beneficial because they protect coastal areas from erosion and their root systems are efficient at slowing down storm surges caused by hurricanes.
Without mangroves, the land has no natural barrier against salt water and crops cannot grow.
The villagers are part of a major effort to replant mangroves in the coastal region started by the non-governmental organisation Oceanium in 2006.
The programme is being funded by French food company Danone, which uses the investment to offset its carbon footprint.
By 2009 more than 70,000 volunteers from local villages were planting mangrove seeds for Oceanium.
Last year, the volunteers planted more than 30 million mangrove seeds.
Now, they are trying for their biggest challenge yet: to plant 100 million seeds by the end of the rainy season, which runs from June to October in the country's south.
Oceanium's founder, Haidar El Ali, has been working with the delta ecosystem for the last 17 years.
El Ali visits Casamance during the rainy season.
He works to spread awareness and to encourage villagers to plant mangrove trees.
The people living in the forests and villages have no assistance. They live on their own natural resources. With their fields, plantations. When we provide them with an awareness campaign, they move and plant a lot. But everything depends on the campaign, he says.
Oceanium also works to retrieve abandoned fishing nets on the sea floor, which are dangerous to marine life.
El Ali also works with women and youth organisations in the area. Many villagers come to hear him speak. His talks are friendly, festive events.
The women at the meeting in the village tell him that they will plant mangrove trees, and they want their village to be the best at doing it.
With El Ali's help, the villagers are restoring the mangrove swamp and the marine ecosystem of the delta.

Tranquillity in Dakar?!
I know I said I was going out of Dakar today but because of the rain in the morning I had to cancel it.
But I decided to show you that the stereotype of Senegalese people who like noise is just not generality.
Hope you had a nice Sunday.

Surprising Diving in Dakar (Senegal)
Not many people know how good the scuba diving is off the west coast of Africa near Dakar, Senegal. As you can see here, the water is clear, and it is not uncommon for the visibility to reach 100 feet (30m). There are a number of wrecks which are home to abundant sea life. Through the Rommel wreck, abundantly covered in soft corals, some friendly butterflyfish say hello. Though moray eels are commonly spotted in the seas off Dakar, the most common are either green, or black and white spotted. However, a third type of moray eel like this is not uncommon in this area – she is colored a moray green but is covered with white blotches. Her mouth is open but she is not threatening to bite; rather, by keeping her mouth open, water can flow freely over her gills so that she can breathe more easily. Next, an outgoing pair of stingrays floats toward Samiy Diver, sensing he is their friend and not a threat. They come and go, weaving their way through thousands of schooling reef fish. Another green and white-colored moray teases us but ultimately backs away, a bit more camera shy than the first. The the Rommel no longer floats on the surface, as a sunken artificial reef, it now offers new life to thousands of coral and sea creatures.
