Japanese HOT POT Feast + Odawara Castle TOUR | Odawara, Japan
It’s no wonder that Japan has been a popular tourist destination for years. Its cities are brimming with centuries of fascinating history and culture and the food scene around the island is unparalleled. The country is so clean and organized, and the natural beauty of the areas outside Tokyo is breathtaking. I hope you’re having as much fun watching this series as I had making it!
My next Japanese adventure took me to Odawara, a town that’s just 35 minutes south of Tokyo via bullet train. It’s a castle town, so I couldn’t wait to see and explore the famous Odawara Castle!
The castle is surrounded by a moat with fish in it. There are also beautiful plum blossom trees on the grounds. The castle has one main gate and the main castle building is set atop a massive stone platform. You have to take a lot of steps to get to the top!
Inside, we climbed to the top, where we had some amazing views of Odawara, lots of snowcapped mountains in the distance, and the Pacific Ocean. There are also binoculars you can use to get even better views for 100 Yen. The 360-degree views are gorgeous!
Then I went back to the bottom to get dressed up like a Samurai! I couldn’t wait to get in the gear. The samurai were feudal lords who ruled Japan for 500 years until 1868. My new friend Haley from Girls Love Travel also dressed up as a samurai!
Then we headed to the workshop at Sororito Odawara to make sachet bags. We could choose from six different natural fragrances and even mix them together if we wanted to. I mixed some frankincense, patchouli, sandalwood, cinnamon, spikenard, and Hedychium together with the mortar and pestle and put it in a silk sachet for my wife. They smelled really amazing together!
Next, it was time to get some oden, or Japanese hot pot, at Oden Honten. I love oden, and Odawara is famous for theirs, so I couldn’t wait to have some!
We started with some appetizers that included fish, green beans, beans and potato, tea, some spicy sauces, and more. The green tea was delicious!
After cleaning my hands with a wet towel, I started with a sardine, which was dry and salty and had a nice glaze on it. Then were the green beans with bonito flakes and sesame. They were a little sweet. There was also celery, cucumber, and red pepper, which was really refreshing. The red beans were also sweet. There were so many contrasting flavors!
Then it was time for the oden! I got mackeral, shrimp cakes, mackeral dumplings, and a white fish, along with mustard, wasabi, and plum miso. The mackeral was great and the wasabi was extremely hot! I liked the fish, which was nice and dense. I tried it with the mustard, which was strong, too!
Next was the white fish, which looked like a huge scallop. It was also dense, but good. The mackeral dumpling had lots of fish, salty flavor. I had it with the wasabi and loved it! The shrimp cake was also really unique. But the best part was the broth! It tasted like a miso soup and warmed me up.
Then was mackeral sushi with seaweed on top. It was gorgeous! The seaweed was very different and fragrant. It was probably the best sushi I’ve ever had. The flavors and textures were outstanding. It seriously blew my mind!
Then we had some wheat noodles, which were amazing! They were so juicy and absorbed the soup they were in. It was like a five-course lunch for 1,800 Yen.
Finally, we ended with some vanilla ice cream with plum jam. It had a nice, orange-like taste.
Then it was time for us to take the Shinkansen bullet train to Tokyo. We checked out some of the things you could buy at the station, including souvenirs, foods like mochis and fish cakes, and even sake!
We rode in Car 11 in Economy Class. It was tough traveling around with my huge luggage, especially up and down the stairs in the stations. I got to the platform just in time to see a bullet train fly by! You have to get on fast because they don’t stop for long.
Car 11 was one of the cars that requires a reservation. This train travels at 350 km per hour and takes only 35 minutes to get to Tokyo. It’s so fast! You have to get off fast! And just like that, I was back in Tokyo!

2nd last vid of my Japan trip. This time of an over night stay in hakone and a short stop to Odawara castle. Back in highschool, also went to Hakone with my Japanese class, and we stayed close to the river, but this time, our Airbnb much more high up near the mountains, so the there were a lot of hills to climb, but the view was amazing, and I'm glad I get to stay at a different side to where I've visited before. Anyway hope you guys enjoy the vid :p

Odawara was a stronghold of the Doi clan during the Kamakura period, and a fortified residence built by their collateral branch, the Kobayakawa clan stood on the approximate site of the present castle. After the Uesugi Zenshū Revolt of 1416, Odawara came under the control of the Omori clan of Suruga.
They were in turn defeated by Ise Moritoki of Izu,[1] founder of the Late Hōjō clan in 1495. Five generations of the Late Hōjō clan improved and expanded on the fortifications of Odawara Castle as the center of their domains, which encompassed most of the Kantō region.
During the Muromachi period, Odawara Castle had very strong defenses, as it was situated on a hill, surrounded by moats with water on the low side, and dry ditches on the hill side, with banks, walls and cliffs located all around the castle, enabling the defenders to repel attacks by the great warriors Uesugi Kenshin in 1561 and Takeda Shingen in 1569. However, during the Battle of Odawara in 1590, Toyotomi Hideyoshi forced the surrender of the Late Hōjō clan through a combination of a three-month siege and bluff. After ordering most of the fortifications destroyed, he awarded the holdings of the Late Hōjō to Tokugawa Ieyasu.
After Ieyasu completed Edo Castle, he turned site of Odawara Castle over to one of his senior retainer, Ōkubo Tadayo, who reconstructed the castle in its present form on a considerably reduced scale, with the entire castle fitting inside what was the third bailey of the original Late Hōjō castle. Aside from an interruption from 1619–1685, during which time the Inaba clan extensively renovated the castle, the Ōkubo clan ruled over Odawara Domain from Odawara Castle until the Meiji Restoration.
Tokugawa Iemitsu, the 3rd Tokugawa Shōgun, visited Odawara Castle in 1634. The donjon built by the Inaba was destroyed in an earthquake in 1703, but was rebuilt by 1706.
The new Meiji government ordered the destruction of all former feudal fortifications, and in compliance with this directive, all structures of Odawara Castle were pulled down from 1870–1872, with the stone base of the former donjon becoming the foundation for a Shinto shrine, the Ōkubo Jinja, dedicated to the spirits of the generations of Ōkubo daimyō. In 1909, the Odawara Imperial Villa was constructed within the site of the former inner and second bailies. The Imperial Villa was destroyed by the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake. Repair work was made to the stone walls from 1930–1931, but with very poor workmanship. In 1935, two of the remaining yagura (which had been destroyed in the 1923 earthquake) were restored, but on a half-scale.
In 1938, the castle site was proclaimed a national historic monument, with the area under historic preservation restrictions expanded in 1959, and again in 1976 based on further archaeological investigations.
In 1950, repairs were made to the stone base of the former donjon, which had been in ruins since the Great Kantō earthquake, and the area was made into the Odawara Castle Park, which includes an art museum, local history museum, city library, amusement park and zoo. The three-tiered, five-storied donjon, the top floor of which is an observatory was rebuilt in 1960 out of reinforced concrete to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the proclamation of Odawara as a city. However, the reconstructed donjon is not historically accurate, as the observation deck was added at the insistence of the Odawara City tourism authorities. Plans have been discussed since the late 1960s on a more accurate restoration of the central castle grounds to its late Edo period format. These plans resulted in the reconstruction of the Tokiwagi Gate (常磐木門?) in 1971, the Akagane Gate (銅門?) in 1997, and the Umade Gate (馬出門?) in 2009.

Located around 60 to 70km away from Tokyo and close to the Izu peninsula, Odawara Castle is a small, yet beautiful castle and maybe the only one worth visiting around Tokyo. But what most people do not know is that during the cherry blossom period, Odawara Castle is by far one of the best Sakura spots around! Better still, go and find the playground behind the castle to get some stunning views of the castle’s main tower surrounded by some gorgeous fluffy sakuras!!!!

Situé à une soixantaine de kilomètres de la capitale, et proche de la péninsule d’Izu, le château d’Odawara est un magnifique petit château, et certainement un de ceux qu’il est impératif de visiter aux alentours de Tokyo. Mais ce que la plupart des gens ne savent pas, c’est que ce château est l’un des meilleurs endroits où apprécier la floraison des cerisiers blancs (Sakura) ! Pour aller encore plus loin, rendez vous sur le terrain de jeu derrière le château afin de capturer des vues uniques de la tour principale cernée par des sakuras bien fournis !!!

► Odawara Jo is a rather small - but quite charming - little castle, located in central Odawara, Kanagawa. It was originally built in 1447, and partly reconstructed in 1633, 1706 and 1960 after taking several blows from various battles, wars and quakes. It was used as both a clan residence and centerpoint of defence in the town of Oadawa during the entire Edo period.
Today, the interior of the castle serves as a museum, displaying several items from the Edo period, such as Samurai swords & armour, but also a big small scale model of how Odawara looked in the Edo period (unfortunately, those items arent featured in the video, as the premises were strictly no photo-areas.) - Enjoy!
