MOVIE PALACES #192 - The RITZ, Sheen Road, RICHMOND, Southwest London. A Union Cinemas scheme completed and opened by Associated British Cinemas in May 1938. Architects Sam Beverley of Verity & Beverley with Leslie H. Kemp - 2150 seats. Renamed ABC in 1961. A splendid 3/8 Wurlitzer - where is it now? Theatre closed and demolished 1971 for office block. Movie Palaces #125 - Four Cinemas in HIGH WYCOMBE, Buckinghamshire. Full Details Below :-

The ELECTROSCOPE/REX in Oxford Street (opposite Frogmore) - The Electroscope opened 28th February 1912 with 750 seats. It was closed in 1930 and abandoned. Later in 1930 it was re-modelled into a small de-luxe super cinema with 688 seats. It re-opened again as the REX in Art-Deco style in December 1937 - architects Kenneth Friese-Green & A.C. Yates. At this time a Hammond LaFleur theatre organ was installed and played by Edward O'Henry.
Closed 30th January 1965. Demolished 1969 and replaced by shops.

The GRAND located at 280 Desborough Road, architect T. Thurlow, was opened 28th April 1913 with 590 seats. I visited this cinema many times during school holidays, early 1950's with my mum. It was absolutely hilarious with breakdowns, wonky picture, in and out of focus etc. The audience had a great time time. The Grand closed in 1962, the frontage was replaced but you can still see the main building from Desborough Road.

The PALACE was situated on Frogmore. Opened 2nd December 1922. Enlarged in 1932, architect Gilbert W. Booth. The theatre had 1650 seats, excellent acoustics and Western Electric Sound. The Palace closed 21st September 1983, and was the longest functioning cinema in High Wycombe.

The MAJESTIC/ODEON opened 27th January 1930. The architect was S.B. Pritlove with atmospheric interior by W.E. Greenwood. 1480 seats were provided. A Compton model J 2/5 theatre organ was installed, and played to great acclaim by the youthful Ron Rogers, a protege of Reginald Foort, who helped Ron in his career at London & Southern and County Cinemas. This was the first cinema pipe organ I played! The Majestic was taken over by County Cinemas in 1932 and by Odeon Theatres in 1939. It finally closed on 25th January 1969 to make way for Woolworths new store.

The Aladdin’s Cave Charity Shop is very easy to find…as long as you know where it is.

And it’s right…here.

Let’s move a little closer. Down to Europe, the UK, England, the South of England, the Home Counties, Hampshire itself, the town of Basingstoke, and then Western Way, which is off the Brighton Hill roundabout, between the Pack Lane and Winchester Road exits.

Heading towards the Odeon Cinema and Milestones Museum, you can turn off at Pinkerton Road, then right at St. Michael’s, left at St. Peter’s, and Burnaby Close is your next left after Ballard.

Or, simply continue to the end of Western Way to St. Peter’s Road, which is the very last turning on the left. Or the very first turning on the right, if you’re coming from Old Worting Road.

Once on St. Peter’s, go past Margaret, Paddock, St. Michael’s and Ballard, and Burnaby is the last turning before the bend.

On Burnaby Close you will also find the Burnaby Stores Chip Shop, the Sub Post Office and Stores themselves (which are actually about here), the Glitz & Glamour Hair Salon, which is here (and the name is spelled with a z), the Taste of India Restaurant (which is over here), and of course the Aladdin’s Cave Charity Shop (which is exactly where it says it is).

Not forgetting the pièce de résistance, a cash machine, right where you need it (and that is here, inside the Stores).

So, off Western Way, to St. Peter’s Road, turn left onto Burnaby Close and Aladdin’s Cave is on the corner to the left of the railings.

Just for fun, let’s zoom out again, to see Burnaby Close, in South Ham, in Basingstoke, in Hampshire, in England, in the UK, which is one of the many wonderful nations you can visit on Earth.

Movie Palaces #126 - The REGAL HENLEY 1937 & The COUNTY MARLOW 1938

A brief visit to two small provincial cinemas, the REGAL, Bell Street, HENLEY-ON-THAMES, opened May 1937 by County Cinemas and the COUNTY, Spital Street, MARLOW. I was pleased to share a Sunday Organ Show with the late ROBIN RICHMOND in January 1973 at the Henley Regal - I was playing my annual pantomime at the Woodville Theatre in Gravesend, Kent at the time. Luckily there are no pantomime performances on Sundays! I do remember they paid a crap fee at the Regal! and Robin had fully enjoyed the bar facilities which did nothing to improve his performance! An interesting afternoon if nothing else! Commentary by Tony Moss.

Aylesbury News, Thames Valley: Almost 300,000 investigations abandoned.

Nearly 300,000 crimes reported to Thames Valley Police have been dropped.
To be exact - 291,858 concluded with a 'no further action' decision since 2014.
That's according to data obtained by a freedom of information request from the Liberal Democrats.
'No further action' is usually given to cases where there's a lack of evidence.
The dropped cases included thousands of robberies, thefts, criminal damage, arson and sex offences amongst other types of crimes.
The data showed theft offences made up well over half of all the dropped investigations, with criminal damage and arson the second most common.
Number of investigations reported and dropped each year
2014 - 120 874 reported, 86 138 dropped
2015 - 127 852 reported, 95 182 dropped
2016 - 135 238 reported, 100 879 dropped
2017 (until 28th February) - 22 552 reported, 9 659 dropped.

MOVIE PALACES #186 - The ROTA, Ash Road and Thornley Road, DENTON, Greater Manchester. Architect Henry Elder provided 1206 seats. Opened 10th December 1934, taken over by Union Cinemas April 1936. Taken over by Associated British Cinemas October 1937.
Closed and demolished for housing October 1959. Commentary by Tony Moss.

Movie Palaces #99 - The REGENT BRIGHTON East Sussex - 1921

Movie Palaces #99 presents the magnificent REGENT CINEMA, Queens Road and North Street in BRIGHTON. Opened 27th July 1921 by P.C.T. with 2200 seats. The architect was Robert Atkinson with interior design by Walter Baynes. The original organ was a Hill, Norman & Beard instrument of unique design. After the fire, a 2/9 Wurlitzer was installed which was made famous by TERENCE CASEY with his recordings and broadcasts. The theatre was demolished in 1973 and Boots the Chemist, opened 1977, now stands on the site.
