Movie Palaces #176 - The RITZ NUNEATON (1937) - Then & Now - Music by KEN STROUD
Movie Palaces #176 - Union Cinema's RITZ CINEMA, Abbey Street and Newtown Road, NUNEATON, Warwickshire - THEN & NOW. Opened 22nd July 1937 by The Union Cinema Company. The architects Verity and Beverley provided 1652 seats Stalls and Balcony, in a comfortable and tastefully decorated auditorium, complete with 3/6 (7rank) COMPTON ORGAN. Taken over by Associated British Cinemas in October 1937 and renamed ABC in November 1961. Taken over by independent operator in October 1977, and renamed Ritz.
This delightful property now stands empty and is deteriorating. The local folk have a great regard for the Ritz and I had a job to take some footage for this video - dozens of folk were stopping me and complaining they thought something should be done and all fondly remember KEN STROUD who became resident organist when he returned from war service. Local school children and supporters have tried to tidy the front of the building as seen in the video, and would dearly love to see it re-open. Ken Stroud, who was a proper cinema organist, is prominently featured in the photographs of film stars under the canopy. Ken is heard on this video playing the original 3 manual 7 unit Compton at Compton Lodge at Sapcote, Leicestershire from one of Ken's releases
on the CL Records & Tapes label.
Bingo followed films at this theatre, and there are rumblings of a consortium coming forward to restore and re-open the Ritz - Let's hope they are successful!
Interestingly the adjacent property to the right is empty and the very large public house on the opposite side of the inner ring road (race track!) is derelict and in the town centre the very large Co-Op store is closed together with other properties.

Exploring DESTROYED Cinema/Bingo Club
Exploring an abandoned cinema and bingo hall! (Known as Kingsway Cinema/Bingo) This place opened on 2nd March 1925 as a cinema , it was converted into a bingo club (date unknown) and closed down in 2007. I know this place doesn't resemble much of a cinema or a bingo hall anymore but it was definitely fun to explore :D

J.Hewitt's excellent site -
The Coventry Strasse [ Coventry Street ] sign was found by the runway at a Nazi airfield captured by Allied forces during the liberation of Europe. Clearly the Luftwaffe was proud of its handiwork. It can be seen in the Peace & Reconciliation Gallery at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum in Coventry along with the defused incendiary bombs and the map with Korn on it [ Korn was the German codename for Coventry for the 14 November 1940 raid ]
Many of the images in this video were scanned from The City We Loved and Coventry Under Fire which were published during the conflict.
Once again, many thanks to Rob Orland who has allowed me to use images from his personal collection.
