MOVIE PALACES #20 - THE REGAL UXBRIDGE - 1931
Movie Palaces #20 - A visit to the fabulous REGAL CINEMA in UXBRIDGE, Middlesex.
Designed by E. Norman Bailey for Abrahams Consolidated Properties.
I had the pleasure of playing the Compton 2/6 (a very sweet sounding early instrument) when still a schoolboy, thanks to Bernard Leno (who owned an electrical shop a few doors from the Regal ) and many happy morning sessions were enjoyed discovering some wonderful sounds of an excellent small theatre organ. It is a condition (imposed by A.E. Abrahams) that the organ must be retained in the building.
Mr. Abrahams built and then leased many cinemas. These included the REGAL EDMONTON, the REGAL WEST NORWOOD and the REGAL MARBLE ARCH. All these theatres included CHRISTIE UNIT ORGANS, a brand obviously favoured by Mr. Abrahams company.
There are over 200 videos in the MOVIE PALACES available to view on ComptonLodgeStudios Channel.

Exploring An Abandoned Cinema With Power Stil On! (Harlow)
Having been inside this building most of last Summer with my mates, I wasn't into taking pictures and recording then but now Since I am I thought I would give the Cinema a revisit. There has been no access since last summer. However, a month ago when i decided to do my weekly check on the building to see if there is a way in I realised someone had made a tiny hole that I could just about fit through.
**Since editing this video and going back to record some more clips the entrance I had used has now been re-boarded back up**
History:
This was the first new cinema to be built for Rank after the war (others were completions of pre-war schemes) and it opened on February 1, 1960 with Follow A Star.
The Odeon Cinema Harlow was designed by T. P. Bennett & Son and had 1,244 seats on a single floor in the stadium plan, with a stepped raised section at the rear instead of the normal overhanging balcony. The projection suite was suspended above the raised section of seating and had an almost level throw to the large screen.
In June 1987, it closed for tripling and the raised section at the rear was converted into two smaller cinemas whilst the front retained the original box and screen.
The Odeon Cinema Harlow was refurbished in 2001 and rebranded with the new Odeon style. This was despite the competition from a six-screen multiplex which opened back in 1990. Its future looked hopeful, however it was closed in August 2005. It was purchased days after closing by a local businessman, and the building still sits empty and unused in 2015.

Movie Palaces #3 - THE REGAL CINEMA, MARBLE ARCH, London - 1928
A visit to the famous Regal Cinema Marble Arch London - billed on 78 rpm records as the Regal Cinema London.Narrated by Tony Moss. The Christie Organ was recorded by Quentin Maclean and Sidney Torch amongst others. Torch's famous recording of Hot Dog was something really new at the time of it's release. I am fortunate to own the second largest Christie Organ originally installed in another Regal cinema built by A.E. Abrahams at Edmonton in North London (long demolished). Sidney made many of his famous recordings on the Edmonton Christie. The Regal Edmonton Christie is now installed and playing at PAUL KIRNER'S MUSIC PALACE musical museum in YNYSHIR, near Porth in the Rhondda Valley. Details of events pkmusicpalace@gmail.com
We look forward to welcoming you to the Music Palace!
