Odiham is a large historic village and civil parish in the Hart district of Hampshire, England. It is twinned with Sourdeval in the Manche Department of France. The current population is 4,406. The parish has an area of 7,354 acres with 50 acres covered with water. The nearest railway station is at Hook, on the London and South Western Railway. The village had its own hundred in the nineteenth century, named The Hundred of Odiham. The village is situated slightly south of the M3 motorway and approximately midway between the north Hampshire towns of Fleet and Basingstoke, some 41 miles southwest of London. RAF Odiham, home of the Royal Air Force's Chinook heavy lift helicopter fleet, lies to the south of the village.

Odiham castle (King John's Castle) - England

Locally known as King John's Castle, Odiham Castle is a ruined fortification situated between Greywell and North Warnborough near Odiham in Hampshire, United Kingdom. It is one of only three fortresses built by King John during his reign. The site was possibly chosen by King John because he had visited the area in 1204 and it lay halfway between Windsor and Winchester.

Today I am with Barry Stevens to explore Odiham Castle, situated close to Odiham, in Hampshire, but actually in North Warnborough. It is one of only three fortresses built by King John during his reign. The site was possibly chosen by King John because he had visited the area in 1204 and it lay halfway between Windsor and Winchester.

The castle is now in a ruinous state, and would have been larger than what we see today. Barry Stevens, a local and historic enthusiast, takes me around the edifice that has been with him since childhood.

Exploring the Basingstoke Canal and the Greywell Tunnel

Today I am out with Barry Stevens in North Warnborough taking a stroll along the history Basingstoke Canal up to the now blocked off Greywelll Tunnel.

Local resident and history enthusiast, Barry Stevens, introduces me to the stretch of the canal from Odiham Castle to the closed off tunnel informing a little about the canal's history.

Fleet to Odiham in nine minutes by canal boat.

From Fleet to Odiham Castle takes a little under 4 hours by Canal boat traveling at 2-3mph. This sequence has been speeded up by 25 times and shows what navigating a canal at 60-75mph would look like. I hope hasn't detracted too much from the beauty and tranquility of this quiet stretch of canal.
