Nicky Haslam's Garden at Odiham Hunting Lodge
Update:October 2019
The contents of the Hunting Lodge will be put up for sale in October 2019. And with the sale will come the end of Nicky Haslam's 40 year tenure at this delightful property. Truly the end of an era.
This video of Nicky Haslam's wonderful garden at Odiham Hunting Lodge in Hampshire is the perfect introduction to English pastoral garden design. It shows the eccentric charm of the Interior Designer who leased the house and garden from the National Trust in 1978.
Haslam's enchanting Jacobean-revival house was built in the 16th century for the Tudor king Henry VII as a resting place from the chase in these once-royal forests. It is said that here his eldest son, Arthur, Prince of Wales, met his fiancée, Catherine of Aragon, upon her arrival in England; Arthur died soon after the wedding, and Catherine subsequently married his younger brother, the future King Henry VIII.
Charming history aside, the Lodge's true delight is its miniature grandeur. The English truly understand the dynamic between buildings and land, Haslam says. On the continent, the country is tamed into submission round a house, while in America homes are statements in that vast landscape. Most English houses, grand or small, nestle in an intimate pastoral setting.
Its 'green rooms' -- of beech hedges, geometric box borders, secret paths and Gothick gazebos -- were created soon after the Second World War by John Fowler, the co-founder of Colefax & Fowler. Now, though, the contents of the herbaceous borders -- roses, foxgloves, astrantia, alchemilla, catmint, pinks and sweet peas -- are mainly Haslam's.
I love the architectural feel of these garden rooms and the way in which Haslam has maintained and augmented a green space of great charm and tranquillity.

The house is so welcoming, Nicky swoons. It just loves people. Cecil Beaton and that world have been, and I've had some parties. The big hunting party for my 40th birthday was quite fun. It had rained for a week, but June 16 dawned and it was boiling. I had Cole Porter being played, jazz music, dancing, a tent, silver and mauve fireworks.
The background music is Pilots by Goldfrapp.

Places to see in ( Basingstoke - UK )
Basingstoke is the largest town in Hampshire. Basingstoke is situated in south central England, and lies across a valley at the source of the River Loddon. Basingstoke is located 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Southampton, 48 miles (77 km) southwest of London, and 19 miles (31 km) northeast of the county town and former capital Winchester. Basingstoke is part of the borough of Basingstoke and Deane and part of the parliamentary constituency of Basingstoke. Basingstoke is often nicknamed Doughnut City or Roundabout City because of the number of large roundabouts.
Basingstoke is an old market town expanded in the mid 1960s as a result of an agreement between London County Council and Hampshire County Council. It was developed rapidly after World War II, along with various other towns in the United Kingdom, in order to accommodate part of the London 'overspill' as perceived under the Greater London Plan in 1944. Basingstoke market was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and it remained a small market town until the early 1960s. At the start of World War II the population was little more than 13,000. It still has a regular market, but is now larger than Hampshire County Council's definition of a market town.
Basingstoke has become an important economic centre during the second half of the 20th century, and houses the locations of the UK headquarters of De La Rue, Sun Life Financial, The Automobile Association, ST Ericsson, GAME, Motorola, Barracuda Networks, Eli Lilly and Company, BNP Paribas Leasing Solutions, the leasing arm of BNP Paribas in the UK, and Sony Professional Solutions. It is also the location of the European headquarters of the TaylorMade-Adidas Golf Company. Other industries include publishing (Palgrave Macmillan, etc.), IT, telecommunications, insurance and electronics.
Basingstoke is at Junction 6 and Junction 7 of the M3 motorway, which skirts the town's southeastern edge, linking the town to London and to Southampton and the south-west. The South Western Main Line railway runs east and west through the centre of the town and Basingstoke railway station linking it to the West of England Main Line to Salisbury and the South West of England, London Waterloo (the fastest train Basingstoke to London takes 44 minutes), Winchester, Southampton, Bournemouth and Weymouth, and via the Eastleigh to Fareham Line and West Coastway Line to Portsmouth and Brighton. Most bus services in the town operate from Basingstoke Bus Station. The majority are provided by the Stagecoach Group through their Stagecoach in Hampshire sub-division. The Basingstoke Canal started at a canal basin, roughly where the cinema in Festival Place is located. From there the canal ran alongside the River Loddon following the line of Eastrop Way.

People of Taste: Nicky Haslam's Hunting Lodge
Nicholas (Nicky) Haslam is undoubtedly on of the most important figures - and characters - in British interior design, whose home for the past 40 years has been the Hunting Lodge in Hampshire, a legendary house, previously the home of John Fowler, which Nicky rents from The National Trust. Built for Henry VII when all the land between Winchester and Windsor was a royal forest, the Jacobean façade was added in 1620. It is rumoured that Catherine of Aragon met her first husband Prince Arthur there, and during Nicky's tenure it has played host to a galaxy of stars, from Joan Collins to Lucien Freud. As Nicky celebrates his 80th birthday and prepares to sell the contents of the folly at Bonham's, House & Garden gets a final intimate tour.

The best place to observe UFOs Basingstoke
The best place to observe UFOs Basingstoke
Is there a prize for being designated as the world’s newest (or biggest or fastest-growing) UFO hotspot? Even if there isn’t, the fine folks of Basingstoke, England, may want to put their name in the running. A recent video showing five lights moving in a line is the latest in a string of UFO reports in that southeast England town since 2008, as well as others in the 1980s and 70s. What’s up, Basingstoke?
The latest sighting comes from MUFON and was reported by Express.co.uk, which also noted some of the previous sightings in Basingstoke. Along with the video (seen here), the unnamed witness submitted a report (portions here – misspellings in original)
“i have ruled out them being any kind of servilian craft as these would have had some sort of flashing light on them and with it being dark and foggy we would have seen this. it couldnt have been search lights shinning up from the ground as we could clearly see the lights surface area getting wider as it shon down meaning the light source was in the sky … the sighting lasted around 30mins and managed to take around 4mins of video”
Fortunately, the good people of Basingstoke keep their cellphones locked and loaded. In April 2016, uploaded this video of four red blinking lights he saw near the Basingstoke train station. Chinese lanterns?
It looks like one common thread in these Basingstoke sightings is the lights. Another witness took this video of a dozen orange lights overhead on a night in June 2008 between 10.40pm and 11.10pm
That time of the night may be a common theme as well. There were reportedly numerous sightings on night in May 2012 at around 10:30 pm. That incident elicited a government response that hints at what at least some of these sightings might be. The RAF Odiham helicopter base is nearby in Hampshire and had choppers in the sky that night, although no one admit responsibility.
Not all of the Basingstoke sightings were lights. A famous photograph (seen here) taken of a sighting in June 2013 of two discs was examined by former Ministry of Defence UFO expert Nick Pope, who said: “It’s one of the best UFO photos I’ve seen for a while. The shape and colour seems to rule out things like aircraft lights or Chinese lanterns.”
The news report said this was the second sighting in Basingstoke in 2013, following another in February.
Going back to August, 12 1983, a 77-year-old man was fishing on the Basingstoke Canal when he claimed a disc-shaped UFO landed near him and two English-speaking humanoids took him on the ship, examined him and let him go back to fishing because he was “too old.”
Other than the RAF helicopter base, there doesn’t seem to be anything in Basingstoke that would cause so many UFO sightings. Sure, it has artifacts dating back to the Paleolithic era, but so do many other English towns. There’s no nuclear plant or precious metal mines nearby – it sits on a mound of chalk and clay. It’s the birthplace of Jane Austen. Are aliens fans of her novels?
Whatever the cause, Basingstoke residents are wise to keep their cellphones charged and ready, and always tell humanoids doing probes that you’re older than you look.
