INTRODUCTION:
Set up on the banks of the river Mahanadi over 4 acres of land, the Odisha State Maritime Museum stands on the site of the ancient Maritime Engineering Workshop that was established by the British Empire in the year 1869. The workshop was set up by then PWD department of the British Administration with the help of Scottish Engineer – G.H FAULKNER.
HISTORY:
The workshop got the distinction of being the only workshop which catered the requirement of 3 provinces of Bihar, Bengal & Odisha. Immediately after the great famine of 1866 in Odisha known as the “Naa anka Durvikhya” the British Administration took up the work of excavating the coast canal & other irrigation projects to counter the effects of famine. Around then the entrance to Calcutta from Cuttack was through adventure on stream Mahanadi to the False point close to Paradeep.This gave rise to the establishment of the Workshop at Cuttack for the maintenance of the vessels used of the transportation.

INSIDE THE MUSEUM:
The Maritime museum is first of its kind in the entire country. The construction and setting up the museum costed nearly 11cr.
The museum demonstrates the maritime practices, traditions and the glory of achievements of from the ancient age to the colonial era of the state. The Museum comprises of 10 galaries which showcases maritime artefacts of the primeval Kalinga.
There is an introduction gallery which has a collection of pictures of boats from ancient days to the modern era on display. One of the galaries displays the boat-building process and another displays the rituals performed by the carpenters during the time of building boats. Other galleries comprise of navigation parts of the vessels.
There is a gallery which exclusively displays the rich cultural heritage of Odisha. Rest of the galleries display the rich maritime history which replicates the boats used during those days.
The galleries of Museum also has the display of pottery works, scluptures of important monuments, weights and measuring instruments, folk dances, visual arts and music.
Apart from the conservation of the divine maritime history, the museum also houses an aquarium showcasing the unique marine life and species found in the state of Odisha.
Besides that a boat shed can also be found housing various kinds of vessels used during the past years.
The visitors can also enjoy the theme parks and picturesque landscape that decorates the museum with the paint of greenery.

Welcome To Odisha State Maritime Museum :
The Odisha State Maritime Museum, which has been set up at this Jobra Workshop, has 10 nos of galleries along with its ancillary components, as required in a modern museum. This location, which has a beginning around 1869 has the unique distinction of being the only workshop, which catered to the requirement of three provinces of Bihar, Bengal and Odisha under the Bengal Presidency of British India. It was set up by the then PWD department of British administration through the efforts of one Scottish Engineer Mr.G.H.Faulkner immediately after the great famine of 1866 in Odisha, known as “Naa Anka Durviksha”.
The British administration took up the work of excavating the Coast Canal, Taladanda Canal and other irrigation projects to counter the effects of drought. This workshop was mainly catering to the need of anicuts, dams, canals and most important inland water transport system. At that time the access to Calcutta from Cuttack was only through a journey on river Mahanadi to the False Point near Paradeep and on sea up to Calcutta or from Chandabali to Calcutta.
