Off road Adventures - Queenstown NZ
Me on ORA's 2011 RMX450Z. Make sure to keep an eye on the drops and views to the side of the shot...! Video was shot in February 2011. I had a great time there, its not like any other rental place I've been to, from what the guide was saying they actually tune their RMX450's for more power! Offroad.co.nz
Off Road Adventures Queenstown - Quad Bike Tour Aug 2016
As strange as it may sound to some, our holiday to the south island of New Zealand in Aug 2016 was to do a driving holiday based around trying the different quad bike tours on offer in different locations in the south island.
We did a total of four of them, while the others had their good points, none of them compared to the last one we did with Off Road Adventures Queenstown.
It's hard to know where to start, there were so many good things. We were collected from their office in Queenstown by Scott who turned out to be one of our guides and is part of the family that owns and runs the business.
Right away at the briefing you could tell this was different to any other quad bike tour we had been on. We opted for the 250cc bikes and Scott asked if i wanted to use gears, never had that option before and was keen to give it a try, glad i did.
Even the training runs were different, none of this drive around in a circle and you are good to go. They genuinely wanted to assess your riding ability along with giving tips on body movement and overall good control of the bikes beyond the basics.
Something else we found unique with these guys was one of the reasons for them to assess people's driving abilities was so they could create groups based on matching ability levels. This is so the confident riders get matched together and the beginners had their own group. This means the confident riders get to really enjoy themselves at a pace they enjoy and not be slowed down by beginners. And works the other way too, so beginners don't feel like they are being left behind or having to drive beyond their abilities.
On all the other tours we have been on, the slowest person in the group determines the overall speed of the whole tour. These guys know that for confident riders this can be a sore point and they have a system to make every rider happy no matter their ability level. Huge thumbs up there.
I personally got to see first hand how this system worked. While i am fairly competent with quads and motorised sports in general, but not an expert, my wife bless her is up for this kind of thing but no where near as confident as myself. During the training run they picked up on this and had her join a group with Eric who was a complete gentleman, he ended up basically taking her on her own personal tour so she didn't feel pressured or any of the other negative feelings one could feel when not being as confident as the others on the tour.
Now for my impressions of the tour, wow. I got the pleasure of riding behind Scott who didn't hold back. I can't tell you the satisfaction that comes from actually being able to open these things up, so many quad tours are nothing more than over glorified scenic tours, so not the case with these guys. The course is full of everything you could wish for, muddy sections to slide through, water sections to splash, but not to many which is good, nothing worse than massive water puddle after puddle to slow things down, big banked corners, steep declines and uphills, big long straights to open the quads right up, it's pretty much got everything you could wish for in a quad bike tour and more.
These guys have got it nailed, they cater for all kinds of people with different abilities, don't punish those that are very capable or those that aren't, the course is amazing, the people that run it and work there are as well, it really is the best quad bike tour we have ever been on. So much so that we will actually be planning a holiday back to Queenstown next year just so we can do it all again, it was the highlight of our holiday.
So long story short, if you are planning a visit to the south island and are keen to give quad bikes or any of the other tours these guys have on offer a go, seriously, go with off road adventures, you wont be disappointed.

-- About this video --
Today’s Queenstown adventure is with Nomad Safaris where we’re taking a Queenstown 4x4 tour!
We get picked up straight outside our hostel and meet our local guide driving a 4x4 off roading vehicle. We hop in and hit the road alongside Lake Wakatipu and towards Arrowtown. We stop along the way at a Lord of the Rings filming location at the Kawarau River to get our Lord of the Rings in Queenstown dose, then head to a secret viewpoint overlooking Queenstown, Arrowtown and Lake Hayes. Here, we learn more about the history of Queenstown.
Then it’s off to the off roading 4x4 tracks of Queenstown on the way down to Arrowtown and the Arrow River. We have an awesome off roading experience driving across the river several times before stopping to do some gold panning in Arrowtown.
After gold prospecting in Arrowtown, we then drive to the Skippers Road in Skippers Canyon, said to be one of the most dangerous roads in the world. It’s also one of the most scenic in our opinion.
So what do you think of a tour with Nomad Safaris in Queenstown? Would you do this 4x4 tour in Queenstown? LUK in the comments.
