30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Today we are now backtracking from Ranfurly to Alexandra! This means a road trip in Central Otago which is home to heritage towns for gold mining. It’s some of the most isolated towns in New Zealand, which are mostly seen on the Otago Central Rail Trail (however, we’re doing it by camper, not by bike). The area is betting known as the Maniototo District in Central Otago.
First up, we follow local recommendations to see the views from Hamiltons Cemetery near Waipiata. We learn about a town that no longer exists except for this Hamiltons Cemetery on a hill overlooking the Central Otago region.
We then hit the road to Ophir, which is the most authentic looking gold mining town in Central Otago – or New Zealand for that matter. Ophir is a New Zealand gold mining town with original buildings kept in prime condition with lots of photo opportunities.
We finally arrive in Alexandra! We’re going to be staying here in the Alexandra Holiday Park for a few days and the first thing we do is cross the Alexandra Shaky Bridge and walk up to the Clock on the Hill in Alexandra for amazing views!
So what do you think of this Central Otago trip? Would you visit any of these Central Otago towns? LUK in the comments!

Your Guide to Central Otago - New Zealand
New Zealand's most inland region is a landscape of vast, open terrain and alpine scenery. The ambience of the area is defined by many things: the exciting change in seasons; the tranquillity that comes with having only 11,000 inhabitants; a rich, gold mining heritage; and contemporary, award-winning wines.
To unwind and relax in Central Otago is not hard. You could cycle a section of the Otago Central Rail Trail; tour a vineyard; play a round of golf; or visit an historic, gold mining town and learn about Otago's equally-prosperous past.
