EXPLORING CHESTER: Walking on the ancient ROMAN WALLS (ENGLAND) ????️
SUBSCRIBE: - Walking on Chester's historic Roman Walls (England). Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. Chester is a city in northwest England, founded as a Roman fortress in the 1st century A.D. It's known for its extensive, well-preserved Roman walls made of local red sandstone. In the old city, the Rows is a shopping district distinguished by 2-level covered arcades and Tudor-style half-timbre buildings. A Roman amphitheatre, with ongoing excavations, lies just outside the old city's walls.

CHESTER England | Amazing Gin &Tonic, Eastgate Clock & City Walls
We decided it would be much more cost effective to take the bus from York to Chester for £27.60 (two people) , as opposed to take the train which was well over three times the price. We booked our tickets online with national express (bus) and received an email confirmation (that wasn't even required to board the bus, they had a list with our booking on it).
The bus left the stop just opposite the York train station (# RJ) at 11:45 and took us to Leeds, about 45 minutes away. From here we jumped on a bus to Chester that would arrive a little after 16:00.

Here is the link to the self guided walking tour I’ve created in Chester, England.
We start our tour at the Eastgate and Eastgate Clock, where you can climb the stairs on the northeast side to walk along the wall in a clockwise direction. The Eastgate clock was added to the bridge (1899) in honour of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee (1897). It is said that Chester’s clock is the second most photographer clock in the UK, after Big Ben of course.

Chester's Roman Fort: Explore the 2000 year old Roman Fort on Hadrian's Wall
On the way to Scotland we had planned to stop somewhere along Hadrian's Wall. Mom really wanted to see it. I had heard that Housesteads Fort was the best place to go, but since we were coming from Barnard Castle we decided that Chester's Roman Fort was the better choice. Chester's Fort is only 1/4 mile West of Chollerford, in Northumberland, on B6318. This was the first of a few places we visited that had no direct connection to our family.
We went through the museum, which has a lot of interesting artifacts from the Roman period. A walk down a path from the back of the museum leads to the fort ruins.
Originally called Cilurnum, Chester's Fort was built ca. 124 AD, just after Hadrian's Wall. It's primary purpose was to guard the bridge across the River North Tyne. The fort replaced a turret, as forts were not part of the original design of Hadrian's Wall in 122. It straddled the wall with roughly half built North of the wall and the rest South. The fort housed a Cavalry Regiment of 500 soldiers called Augusta.
Around 178 AD the fort was occupied by the Second Asturians; a cavalry unit from Spain who remained at Chester's until the end of the Roman period. Much of the fort was rebuilt for the Asturians, and the visible barracks are from this time. During the period of 180 AD to 250 AD a settlement grew outside the fort walls. While there have been no excavations of the settlement, evidence from other forts suggest that it would have been abandoned by the end of the 3rd century due to the increase of civil wars and barbarian invasions.
Through the 4th century Chester's declined. Few inscriptions were made to record daily life or fort history. Soldiers were not paid cash as much as previously but instead received goods or services. Chester's would have been increasingly cut off from Rome, but it is not known whether the unit was removed or simply left to fend for themselves. There is no evidence of occupation of Chester's after the 5th century. Around 675 the bridge was dismantled to build the church at Hexham.
In 1796 the land was owned by Nathaniel Clayton. He had the fort leveled and buried to form a park between his mansion and the river. His son John inherited the place in 1832 and began excavation work at the fort. He also bought the land at Housesteads and began excavation work there. After John died in 1890 his nephew Nathaniel George Clayton continued work until 1895. He commissioned the museum in 1896, and it was finished in 1903.
In 1954 the fort, baths, and wall were placed in the care of the Ministry of Works, now English Heritage. As we had bought an English Heritage OVP we got in for free.

Part of Chester's historic Roman walls have collapsed
Part of the Roman wall in Chester has collapsed, close to an area which had previously crumbled 12 years ago. The debris was discovered on Friday morning near the Grosvenor Shopping Centre and next to Wesley Church Centre, reports CheshireLive. The section has been cordoned off from the Grosvenor Hotel to The Newgate. One theory is that heavy overnight may have contributed to the collapse of the ancient wall. There are no reported injuries as a result of the damage to the wall from the falling masonry. Contractors from Cheshire West and Chester Council are on site. A 30-metre section of the walls, which date back to Roman and medieval times, collapsed in April 2008. Laser scanning and a survey involving radar of the collapsed section of wall was carried out to allow experts better knowledge of weak spots in adjacent sections. The walls reopened two years later, in 2010, after scaffolding was put up to allow repair work to take place. Surveyors, engineers and archaeologists were all drafted in to the stabilising and reconstruction of the damaged section at the time. The Labour Chester MP Chris Matheson pledged to support action to repair the damaged section of wall. He said: Chester's Walls are the jewel in our city's crown. I am appalled that the company carrying out development on the site has not exercised the care and diligence that we expect to see in such close proximity to this iconic ancient monument. Whilst further details about this incident are still forthcoming, I will be offering my support to all of the heritage partners in Chester, to ensure that action is taken to rectify this situation and restore this section of Chester Wall to its former glory. Chester Archaeological Society tweeted: Understand that section of wall had already been closed because of fears over stability. Immediate cause of collapse may have been recent heavy rain (as was the case further north by the Grosvenor Hotel. Cheshire West Council said the section collapsed last night after excavations being carried out by a private developer, working alongside the historic structure, compromised the integrity of the Ancient Monument. Investigations are continuing to establish the exact reasons for the collapse, but early indications appear to show that earth has been removed from the bottom of the city walls behind 15 to 19 Newgate Street. The removal of too much of the earth exposed a section of bare foundations.
