갓파 이야기를 듣고 흥미진진한 찰나 마침 이곳에 도깨비를 전시하는 곳이 있다고 해서 찾아가봤다. 세계의 다양한 도깨비를 비롯해, 도깨비와 관련된 모든 자료를 전시하고 있다. 그 중에 갓파도 있다! 무서운 도깨비부터, 애교 넘치는 도깨비까지. 그리고 이것은 이곳을 대표하는 도깨비 가면이다. “도깨비 검무라는 민속예능이 탄생한 발생지가 도깨비관이 있는 이와사키라는 곳입니다.” 도깨비 가면을 쓰고 추는 도깨비 검무는 예부터 농민들이 쌀이 떨어지거나, 질병이 유행할 때 기원하는 의미로 췄던 전통 춤이다. 중요무형민속문화재로 지정돼 지금은 도깨비검무 보존 회가 그 전통을 이어가고 있다. 북과 피리, 징으로 연주를 하고 보통은 8명의 무용수가 춤을 춘다. 빠르고 역동적인 움직임이 박력 있고 매우 인상적이다. 이 춤의 독특한 걸음걸이는 땅을 밟는 행위를 통해 그 자리를 정화시킨다는 의미가 담겨있다. 도깨비 가면을 썼지만 뿔이 없고 가면의 색이 다 다르다. “흰색, 빨간색, 파란색, 검정색의 4개의 가면이 있는데 오대명왕, 동서남북, 춘하추동을 나타내는 거예요.” “도깨비 검무 보존회에서 전통을 지키게 된 계기는 무엇인가요?” “고등학교 때 도깨비 검무를 배우는 클럽활동을 하면서 팬이 되어서 도깨비검무 보존회에 들어온 것입니다.”
